Shrimp and Grits

I have never heard of such a concoction. Must be the southern equivalent of chicken 'n waffles.

Like Bronker, I'll try just about anything once so I may have to find a place around here that makes it.

WTF does that have to do with Shrimp & Grits?

It is kind of synchronistic that I saw this thread, today. Just last night, my sister in law (who works at Cracker Barrel) was telling me that they are about to start serving Shrimp and Grits as one of their 'limited time' offerings. I wouldn't get too excited, though, because the way she described their version it sounds like it is just going to be grilled shrimp on top of plain, old grits (didn't sound like there would be any gravy, sauce, etc.)

The only place I have ever had shrimp and grits was at the Inlet Crab House in Murrels Inlet, SC. It is a great little hole-in-the-wall seafood restaurant/shack where the catch or special of the day is often apparently determined by whatever is the most abundant catch that morning (it is a Captain-owned restaurant.) Being that shrimp and grits is a lowcountry dish that originated in the coastal regions of SC, you can imagine that it was pretty good (although far from the best thing I have had there, IMO.) Doesn't do you much good in Nashville, though.

Went to Puleo's with my girlfriend tonight and decided to try the Shrimp and Grits since several have commented on it. I was very happy with that decision. It was a damn good dish. Topped it off with a slice of apple pie and vanilla ice cream. ;)

"A Charleston Favorite", Sauteed shrimp, Italian sausage, peppers and onions served over stone ground cheese grits with Tasso gravy. $14.99

Went to Cracker Barrel in Hendersonville, TN. Friday night and the waitress told us they are changing their menu again and bringing in something new that is supposed to stay on the menu (i.e. not a temporary seasonal item). The new items she mentioned were Haddock, Strawberry Chicken Salad, and Shrimp and Grits.

I'm glad I saw this thread come around again. I took this picture last week and forgot to post it.

Here are the best shrimp and grits ever, in my opinion. From Great Southern in Seaside, FL.

That reads "Spiced shrimp with a saute of apple-wood smoked bacon, spinach, Portebello Mushrooms and cream, all on a bed of smoked Gouda cheese grits"

Top that off with some key lime pie and that's a little piece of heaven.

The mac and cheese with bacon and shrimp isn't half bad, either.

This thread made me go to the Cajun Steamer in Franklin last week, and try the shrimp and grits. I have to say, it was pretty darn good. I will definitely try shrimp and grits when I see it again.

As far as the Cajun Steamer itself, the prices on the entrees are high, but you get a large portion. The appetizer I had (calamari) was horribly overpriced for what I got. $8 for a very small amount of fried calamari. Service was spotty, at best. I don't know if I will go back.

The mention of Murrel's Inlet gets me hungary for oysters. Eaten many a steamer full of oysters at Nance's Restaurant. Wife almost has to sit at another table when she smells the oysters.

Thats good to know. There is always either a Cracker Barrel or Shoneys around.

I have caught a lot flounder in Murrel's Inlet. Great place to fish and eat.

Crawdaddy's West Side Grill in Cookeville - on Broad Street in the old part of town, the west side of town. Not been in a year or two but would imagine it is still on their menu. Very tasty if you are willing to travel.
