Times past in our great nation...

Didn't notice my dad or aunt in the backround, but I have that same plinker in the first pick that they both learned to shoot with. Really need to clean it up and send some down range with it. And it's the youth length barrel.

There's always been some give and take in America. Yea, you might not have landed in jail in 1956 for having a rifle in your car, but if your political beliefs were not to the liking of McCarthy and his ilk you might. Or if you were black and drank from the wrong water fountain. Or sat in the wrong seat on the bus. In some areas we've improved, and in others we've taken giant leaps backwards.

It is apparent McCarthy was right, just look at whats happening. In addition to the covert takeover of our country the administration has begun issuing ssn's to the illegal aliens, non citizens, so not only will they be able to pay taxes (hahahahaha) they will be able to claim tax credits and retirement. Of course voting will be next on the list.

I really don't understand the mentality but I guess I was raised that way and not indoctrinated.

I have that exact same gun in my safe. One of the first guns I ever shot and I still have it to this day.

I also miss America. I bet that cop didn't shoot himself either!! I grew up in this same environment as in those pics and I can tell you it was a better place to be. When a 9 year old could go into the local Western Auto and buy a box of 22 shorts for $0.29 and better than that nobody thought this was a "bad" thing. You could carry a pocket knife to school, or on  an airplane for that matter, while folks lit up a cigarette and had a drink!! We have given our America away to folks that don't LOVE it like we do, so how do we get it back??

Now that is the million dollar question...I believe nothing short of the "R" word will bring her back to good again...We need to take this country back from the billion dollar thieves that stole it from us...

My dad taught me how to shoot with this one. Once things warm up a little I'll start making it shine again. Sanding, stain and wax are outside projects.

McCarthy may have been right, but that doesn't excuse trampling on peoples' rights for thinking differently than him.

I concur. However, if they are doing more than thinking (see current REAL news) they are undermining the foundations of this country. It would be one thing if they would run on their platform, state their intentions and be honest with their actions. None of that is happening. Which is truly shocking because of how wonderful it is, why would someone deceive the general public when their way is the best way??????

The Gov isn't trampling on the commies, they are trampling on those that are against the commies. Hmmmmm

McCarthy wasn't after terrorists. He was after anyone who disagreed with him.

Anti-capitalists, communists. He was over the top but there were soviet spies that had infiltrated the government. Going after folks that were anti-American makes sense for national security.
Inmo, the exact same thing has happened today except they aren't spies. They are twisted radicals that are hell bent on changing this country under the cover of democracy.

But who gets to decide what's "anti-American"? Obviously a dude with a bomb-vest yelling "death to America!" is anti-American, but it's rarely that easy to determine.

Example: A person supporting gay marriage says it's equal protection under the law. Standing against it is anti-American. A person against gay marriage says it's immoral and degardes the societal fabric of our nation and goes against the traditional Christian heritage of our nation. To support it is anti-American.*

McCarthy set himself up as the sole decider of what/who is and isn't anti-American and that in and of itself is very un-American. The goal was good, but that much power tends to corrupt and it ended up like LagerHead said. you didn't have to be a communist or a homosexual. all you had to do was disagree with Joe and he'd investigate you for one or the other. Even when the investigation turned up nothing, that stink stays around a long time.

*Just an example....let's not beat that particular horse into glue.

Communism is anti American. Everything I've read about Joe was all tied to communism. Perhaps his overreach was to straddle people with strife as long as he found they were supporters.

To use it against other ideals is certainly outrageous. Such as the dems saying the tea party is anti American for resisting the devious socialistic takeover.

It is a dead horse, just like the founding of this country.

I don't disagree that communism is anti American. But who gets to decide what "communist" is? Certainly a card-carrying member of the American Communist Party who wear's Che shirts is. But what about a union worker? Is he a "communist"? What about someone who thinks universal healthcare is a good idea? Is she a "communist"?

As far as ole Joe only being tied to communism, you might want to read up a bit about his "Lavender Scare" witch hunt on homosexuals. It was in many ways more effective at eliminating his dissenters than his "Red Scare" communist witch hunt. He didn't have to prove anything. Just the stink of an investigation into being red or gay at that time was enough to sideline nearly any career. I suppose crucifying gays was as close as he could get to the moral high ground considering his heavy dependence on alcohol. People in glass houses and all that.
