Yay smart meters!

Looks like MTEMC started installing smart meters, said they sent out prior notice via mail and phone calls... Obviously not.  They will be returning on Monday to remove mine :)

If you have an implant of some sort, you may want to call them and tell them to skip your place before they put it in.

Good for you to get it removed!

Bad for everyone that gets one!

The frequency and power of the RF waves given off by a smart meter are similar to that of a typical cell phone, cordless phone, or residential Wi-Fi router. Smart meters typically send and receive short messages about 1% of the time.

Then these don't seem like the ones they put in at Mom's a while back.

Use it, when she sent in payment she sent current in the reading from her meter.

They would go round and audit all the meters about once a year.

They changed the meter a fews back to one with a blinding light.

The best we can tell based on where she lives it feeds back though the electric cable and she never has to report it.

They never see a meter reader driving around.  It is something Cumberland Valley Coop. (KY) has.

Yep.

All Cleveland Utilities electric customers (unless opted out) have an electric smart meter. They are in the process of replacing 15,000 of roughly 30,000 water meters currently. They essentially connect to the electric meter and pass the reading along.

They send along a reading every few hours or even longer.

Who here has a cell phone in their pocket, router at home, 10 Wi-Fi devices, and more?

More than that, even if you tried to "go clean" what about all the radio waves bouncing around outside of your control.

Now, smart meters could theoretically pose privacy issues. Example: if hacked, it could be determined at exactly what time each day someone takes a shower or something. I guess you would also have to worry about trusting all the utility employees that have access to it.

My opinion: Find something bigger and badder to worry about.

I've heard Glenn Beck ranting and raving about smart meters. I'm not sure if I have one, but there was a new meter installed here a couple of years back, and I no longer see a meter reader come down the drive.

So far, I have electricity and still get a bill. I can't tell anything's changed.

Don't have one and know little about them.

Smart meters can affect (Borg) implants?

What is the issues with them?

They emit signals on a few different frequencies or bands, whatever you want to call them.  Like it may operate at 1watt on 900 mhz, but then it also pings other meters at 500mw on 70hz and the master may take in signals at 900mhz and 70 hz and then broadcast back at 2.4ghz on 5 watts or something.  In my case, the meter is literally a few feet away from my headboard so it could interfere with the implanted recorder as well as the base station that transmits the data every night.  You can go with the 'dangerous RF emitter', the 'they're monitoring me' or the 'they're getting more control' argument.  Any which way you look at it, it never seems to add up.

Here's the reality of it from a NIST publication (used this as a reference for a class earlier in the year) http://nvlpubs.nist.gov/nistpubs/ir/2014/NIST.IR.7628r1.pdf

They list "insurance companies" as being interested in your usage data to determine premiums or whatever.  This is just the beginning of the security/privacy concerns that the system introduces into our society.  We can't even get our current infrastructure EMP-proof, but we're going to spend billions of dollars to monitor you closer.

Seems like it's taking a while for people to realize the dangers of smart meters and smart grids. Oh well, reminds me of when I used to tell people the government was recording all their electronic data and they called me crazy and paranoid.

But you are crazy and paranoid.

We took a private vote and confirmed it. lol

Could they turn off your power at the box from a remote operations center?

In CZ9's jeep thread it showed how they were able to hack into a vehicle and take control of the electronic/mechanical systems.

As wireless communication becomes faster, more infrastructure is developed and more info can be carried, the meter reader could be conceivably be replaced by technology...right?

Could happen...science fiction and tin foil hat conspiracies can come true...

Turn off the power in a major metro area for 30 days...wonder what would happen...

Yes, and some places the power company even has linked up to people's HVAC units and they control them as well if they think too much power is going out to residential homes during peak/business hours, they can turn off your A/C or heat to lighten the load.  Next on the list are the appliances; wouldn't want you running the oven more than the allotted times on Thanksgiving or Christmas, now would we?
