If he's going to help out our troops I'm certainly not going to stand here and question his motives.4 points

A few months back, Mia - my little, old chihuahua, died. She was seventeen and I had her from the time she was first weaned. She wasn't the typical 'shiver and snap' chihuahua - she actually liked people although she knew to bark if someone was outside who didn't belong there. She made just about the perfect watchdog (not to be confused with a guard dog) when I lived in the 'hood in Knoxville. In fact, I still believe she saved my life one night. Her barking woke me at around 2am. Knowing that she didn't just bark for no reason, I took my .38 and went to check things out - and ended up stopping three guys who were trying to break in the front door. When I first got Mia, I was still in college. She was with me for the latter half of my twenties, my entire thirties and was still there with me when I turned 40 and almost until my 41st birthday. She was there when my wife and I started dating, when we got engaged, when we got married and was still there after we separated. She was there through the death of my grandmother (with whom I lived while I was attending college) and my father. No matter what, she was always glad to see me and, despite her small stature and while I knew she wouldn't be much in a fight, I always felt that she 'had my back', so to speak. Many friends - some I considered close friends - came and went but that little dog was always there, a constant for seventeen years. And then she was gone. I wanted to post a pic of her but don't seem to have any on Photobucket at the moment (I'll have to remedy that.) Well, I was in no hurry to get another dog but I wasn't exactly opposed to it, either. I knew that, as I live in the country, now, I wanted a bigger dog. I wanted a dog that could come in the house and keep me company but that would also be fine staying out in the yard at times. I wanted a dog that could walk the woods with me without my having to worry too much about the coyotes in our area making a quick snack of it. I also generally prefer female dogs as they don't usually have the same need to mark their territory (by hiking their leg and peeing all over everything) as some male dogs but gender would not be a deal breaker. I had decided to just wait until the right opportunity came along. Funny thing was, a couple of weeks later, it did. I was at the Crossville flea market trying to get rid of some extra Bantam roosters that I had when I saw a lady and her kids were giving away a couple of puppies. The lady said that they were a cur mix (further research leads me to believe that she is mostly a Mountain Cur - apparently the same type of dog as Old Yeller was in the book although not the movie.) Both puppies were female. The lady said that they had to take them from their mother before it was really 'time' because she was trying to wean them early and had been snapping at them, etc. and they were afraid she was going to hurt them. They were only about five or six weeks old at the time. Something about the smaller of the two called out to me and I ended up taking her home. From the second I first held her, she took to me - licking my chin and chewing at my beard as if she'd known me all along. I named her Millie, which is a name I never would have thought to give a dog but just seemed to fit her (I didn't know at the time that one of G.W. Bush's dogs was named Millie and not being a big 'fan' of Bush that certainly isn't why I chose the name.) The day I got her, if I cupped both of my hands together she could curl up and lie down in my palms. This is a picture of her from just the other day, at about 3.5 months old: Now, generally she is an energetic (until she gives out at which time she converts to more or less a puppy shaped sack of potatoes), fun loving, fairly easy going puppy who hasn't quite gotten that whole fine motor skills thing down. My mom is my next door neighbor so she stays with her while I am at work. She plays with and loves mom's dogs. She plays with an loves my sister's kids. She even plays well with my estranged wife's miniature daschund and never hurts the little weiner dog despite now being nearly three times her size. She does well at the vet, seems to like most people and makes me laugh a lot. The other night, I was at my mom's house just hanging out and getting ready to take Millie home when mom's dogs started barking and carrying on. Obvously, there was something in the woods behind her house (which would also be behind mine.) It isn't unusual for them to behave that way as we have coyotes, deer and other critters that sometimes get pretty close after dark. I went ahead and put Millie on her leash (I always have her on a leash when she is outside because I am trying to teach her to stay close to me when we are walking around) and headed outside. My front yard has a fence around it and there is a gate between my yard and mom's. I had just gotten Millie through the gate, closed it and started toward my front door when she quickly (as in so quickly that my eyes couldn't really follow her) ran/leaped from my right side over to my left, yanking hard on the leash. She then started barking at an area somewhere around the back corner of the fence. Now, I have heard her 'arf' sometimes when she is playing but there was nothing playful about this bark. In fact, she finished off the bark with a low, guttural growl then stood her ground with her hackles up. For just a few seconds, my little, goofy, clumsy, happy-go-lucky, twenty pound puppy was gone and a little mutt with the heart of a 195 pound Rotweiler stood in her place. I never saw whatever was there but with the way she was acting (and the way mom's dogs acted) it may well have been a coyote. Whatever it was, it spooked her because when I got her started back toward the house she hurried along with her ears back in her typical 'I'm scared' look. That was when I realized that this little, THREE AND A HALF MONTH OLD PUPPY had just knowingly, willingly and without hesitation flung herself between me and something she viewed as a threat. Not only that but, despite being quite scared, she had held her ground and barked/growled a challenge and a warning that Ol' Whatever-It-Was had darned well better back off and leave her master alone or it was going to have her to deal with. After I got her inside I got the shotgun and went back out to see if I could lay eyes on the thing that had upset her so. For her part, she kept barking and - once again in spite of the fact that she was scared, herself - tried her best to get out the door with me and not let me go back out there alone. I was touched and, I must admit, pretty proud of her. So, anyhow, that's my tribute to the memory of my old friend as well as a little bragging on my new one.3 points

Actually he seems like a pretty nice guy. He has his problems, and those are made public because he is famous which probably makes them worse, but I would bet everything he has done has been done by someone on this forum without the publicity. All of it combined? Well most people cannot afford to do ALL that stuff.3 points

I said earlier that I believed in innocent until proven guilty. However, that doesn’t mean that I think it actually happens. I’m sure that you, as have I, have put cuffs on people, towed their cars, locked them up in jail, and that’s where they stayed until they went to trial because they couldn’t make bond. I’m sorry, but that’s not innocent until proven guilty. I believe the way it should be (and the way it will be someday) is that no one can be placed in jail unless they are taken before a judge and it is shown that you are a danger to someone. A person should be given a “Notice to Appear†on the street and let go, then if they don’t show up for court they are in another category and can be detained. Jail is a dangerous place and innocent people are hurt all the time; I know I’ve seen it many times. A person has no business being there unless they have been convicted or unless they are a real threat to someone. Someone could make a very big name for themselves by hurting or killing Zimmerman in jail.2 points

I can't say with a great degree of certainty that if I had Sheen's wealth I would not be in a mansion somewhere snorting coke off of a couple of large breasted, 20 year old porn stars. Luckily I was blessed with a small bank account and have a much fuller life than that. However, if I was blessed with tiger blood I'd still support the troops, and I'd mean it. I think he does.2 points

At the end he says, if you point a gun at an officer, you're gonna get shot. That is pretty ####ty if the officers don't even identify themselves as such. There certainly needs to be some repercussions from this. How can you bang on someone's door, not identify yourself as an officer, and then shoot the guy who anwers the door with a gun.2 points

You have a bunch of people already stoking the fire for a riot. It won’t be limited to Florida, and I doubt it will depend on the verdict.2 points

Well I don't think that they will let this one go. I never get a name, just want to see a TN drivers license. Not my responsibility to verify anything other than TN residency. Personally I would never keep up with a bill of sale and I hope my alibi holds up should the firearm ever be used in a crime. Besides I usually sell to the fine folks on TGO........what could go wrong.1 point

do not try to fire any of the new made ammo for this rifle.it is a model 1888 that started out with a .318 size bore and even if it has the s stamped on the reciever to shoh that the bore was redone to convert it to the .323 round which is what all surplus and modern ammo is now.the barrel cannot stand the pressure of it. if you do want to shoot it you will need to have the barrel sluged and have someone make you hand loads for it with a lite power charge. even then i would only let someone do it that could do it correct.you do not want to split a barrel or have the bolt tear the locking lugs off and come back in your face. the 98 action took care of all the problems that they had with the rifle .paul mauser knew what he was doing. if it were mine i would make a nice display of it and hang it on the wall. if you notice the one in the video has no recoil.these gund would kick like a mule.1 point

I have a Marlin 1894c in .357 and love it. That said, I've heard they're hard to find and I've also heard complaints about QC issues in recent times. I bought mine back in 2000 for around $400, but I'm guessing you'll pay rather more for one now. Other than the "Wow, they look kinda cool" factor I've never understood the Mares Leg appeal. As a rifle they have reduced magazine capacity, shorter barrel and no proper stock. As a pistol they're awkward and just not that useful. But hey, if you really want one there's no real required reason beyond "Cause I want it!"1 point

I’ve been accused of being a lot of things; but a liberal is not one of them. I’m a conservative and I believe Zimmerman (based solely on what I have is read) is guilty of manslaughter, but not 2nd degree murder. By acting in a reckless manner he contributed to a situation that caused him to put himself in harms way; he then went directly to deadly force to stop the situation. A jury should decide if that sounds reasonable. I believe in “Innocent until proven guiltyâ€, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have an opinion. We are having a discussion and sharing opinions; is there something wrong with that? I see it done here all the time. What will happen if he is convicted? It won’t impact me in any way. I’m not going to instigate a situation that could likely have me depending on the use of a gun to protect myself. I believe Zimmerman should be out on bail, he represents no risk, I believe the Judge is bias and should step aside, I believe he is charged with the wrong crime, but I also believe due to his reckless actions an innocent kid walking down the street is dead; and for that he should pay. What we do here and what we say here has no impact; its just discussion.1 point

Perhaps in other areas such as LA where there is little control over the third world areas I guess. I mean, with the proper amount of hype and a motivational riot leadership I you can get a good riot going in those places any day of the week. In Florida where this is all going on I don't see anything happening. There are a lot of reasons for this, but the short answer is that the environment does not support it. Even the black community in Sanford isn't going to support a bunch of outsiders coming in and stirring up trouble, because in the end it will be their neighborhoods that bear the destruction. Beyond the other side of this issue in regards to the race baiting and such and media slant, there is an equally disturbing undertone I've noticed which seems to invite the idea of such a breakdown as an opportunity for a cultural purging; an armed reaction to it. If folks knew what something like that actually looked like, smelled like.... sounded like, they wouldn't be wishing for it. They'd be praying that such an awful day would never come.1 point

I know that it is somehow fundamentally wrong for me to even suggest this, but what if he's found guilty because the evidence supports his guilt?1 point
-
I don't think anyone has said that or believes that. This isn't a "liberal" or "conservative" issue at all. Doing what is right is not a "conservative" or "liberal" issue; it's a moral one and what brings politics into this case are the race-baiters and politicians who are more interested in scoring points for their side and/or lining their pocketbooks than actually getting to the truth and seeing justice done. I don't believe accusations; I believe evidence and these recent accusations are suspect if only because of their timing; plus, they have zero to do with his guilt or innocence of the crime he is accused of.1 point
-
For one thing "suspect" is not the same as "criminal" and people treat you differently when they know you've been a suspect. A buddy of mine was a "suspect" in a child molestation case for about 10 minutes. That was how long it took for them to get some questions out of the way and confirm he had nothing to do with it and the other guy was who they were after. Didn't matter - people treated him differently merely because he was questioned in relation to the event.1 point

That's what I heard him say, but you can't scare people by showing the entire video. When you are the greatest thing since sliced bread it's hard not to believe that all of your success is not entirely based on your own brilliance. Hard work and smarts plays a HUGE part in a individual's success, but I believe that luck and divine intervention also have a hand to play. Someone or something assisted in creating a environment conducive to success.1 point

Lots of poor choices made here. We already know what the police did, so let's look at the other side of the equation, the one we actually control. If the report is accurate, he opened the door, gun in hand. If he had looked through the peephole first he would have seen uniformed cops outside and probably would have thought better of that. If he had yelled "who is it" first they may have identified themselves and he would have at least hesitated. Yes, I know, he was under no obligation to do that. His home, no reason he can't answer the door in his boxers toting a flamethrower if that's his preference. But there's lots of things that are perfectly legal choices that are poor choices nonetheless. It's legal for me to walk out into the crosswalk the instant the light changes and the "walk" sign lights up. I am under no obligation to look and make sure traffic has halted, I have the right of way. If I were to start doing that (especially near where I work) I'd be a dead man in pretty short order. Would I be in the right? Sure. Would I still be dead? Yep. If someone comes pounding on my door in the middle of the night, I'm going to be carrying when I go down there. I'm also going to check the peephole first and yell through the door to find out who it is. If they claim they're the police I have no problem telling them I'm calling in to double check they're legitimate.1 point

Same here. The teaser on Drudge pulled me in. I read what he said and it wasn't specifically referring to business owners not being the owners of their success. He was referring to perhaps life mentors and inspirations that helped them along the way achieve their goals of success. Of course, the subtext of the whole thing was the justification of government intervention.1 point

30 minutes from where this is going to be tried Casey Anthony was found not guilty, despite all the media circus surrounding it and the emotional implications that came with the manner of the crime. This was a jury that admittedly wanted to convict her but wouldn't because of the lack of sufficient evidence to reach a guilty verdict beyond a reasonable doubt. What makes you think in this case that each person on a jury (after going through the selection process) would end up suspending morals to convict someone without enough evidence to do so? Sure, it's possible that one or two might, but everyone? I think he's guilty, but if I was sitting on a jury it wouldn't matter what I think, it would only matter what the evidence proved/disproved. I don't even consider myself to be of high moral character compared to most, so I don't think the defense would have to hard of a time selecting jurors that can separate opinion and evidence. He will get a fair trial. If he is found not guilty than it means that he either did nothing criminal or there wasn't enough evidence to convict. If he is found guilty it is because he is criminally liable, not because of media hype. Also, Orlando isn't LA, and Sanford isn't laid out in a manner where any rioting could take hold in an area that would matter. The economical hub of Sanford is away from the ghetto by several miles towards the interstate. Furthermore, Floridians simply wouldn't tolerate such nonsense and there isn't the amount of low-life gangs and criminals to take over the way they did in LA. LA is a third world country in most places. Central Florida in the greater Orlando area is just not that way. Even the crime laden areas off OBT and Pine Hills wouldn't allow rioting and such nonsense to take place. Maybe I just have a little more faith in my fellow Americans than most, or maybe I'm just not secretly hoping for a race war.1 point

You could also look at the springfield loaded operator instead of the TRP if you were interested in a cheaper price point but still want a railed 1911, if you decide you don't want a rail you should check the classified section *hint hint*1 point

Fact that in my lifetime TN went for Carter and twice for Clinton has always shown the possibility. And Gore lost by less than 4%. Worst things get, the bigger the Dem vote from the have nots, too; that's the scariest thing about big gummit big daddy failure: it's more self perpetuating than overall moderate success. - OS1 point

IMO: "Esquire" suggests lawyer -- newcomer to the forum with zero previous posts suggests CCA's lawyer. Well? Threats and intimidation tactics don't go down well with this crowd. No libel here -- if relating a statement from a purported eye-witness, and that is what the purported eye-witness said, there is no libel. The truth is a defense against libel. Additionally, the "five minutes" is qualified with ". . . took maybe 5 minutes . . . " which is materially different from "five minutes." I imagine the purported eye-witness made a statement to police, which therefore is a public record. Perhaps the police report ought to be retrieved and posted online. Why don't you just tell Analog Kidd to ". . . just shut up, or someone might break your legs." Do you think that might be just as effective? Perhaps someone from CCA will sign on and repudiate your statements. IMO.1 point

Both current parties need to be removed and the entire political game needs to be restarted as a true 3 party system along the lines of conviction; liberal, moderate/independent, and conservative. Accompanying that needs to be a drastic re-organziaton of congress in how bills/laws are created and voted upon as well as how the whole thing is funded. We need real term limits for congressmen/women, no free rides for serving in congress, etc.1 point

Putting a bag together yourself is definitely the way to go. I'm a RN and a SWAT medic so my bag may be a bit ridiculous for some but here is what I consider a good start: CAT( Military style tourniquet that can be applied one-handed) Quick Clot Gauze (not the powder, the gauze that is impregnated with the clotting chemical) SAM Splint Israeli type bandage Gauze to make a pressure dressing Medical tape trauma shears For a non medically trained person that is a good start. I carry large bore needles for chest decompression but unless you know where to put it you could do more damage than good.1 point
