  1. I’m no expert, but the Active Self Protection account on YouTube shows alot of shootings and very few are a drag race to the draw. Many are shooting around innocent bystanders. With my RMR I can keep up with anyone in the draw and usually I can shoot better beyond 7 yards. I have to practice regularly to do this though.
  2. I chopped my 17 to 19 length and it is a great way to go. Yes people will give you a hard time about cutting up a gun, but it's your guy and you need it to do a job. "They" don't have to like it, carry it, understand it, or buy it later if you want to sell it. If I buy a 17 or 34 in the future I will chop the grip.
  3. The essay is ill informed. United States v Cruikshank was decided in 1875. Presser v Illinois was decided in 1886. I understand neither is viewed as a relevant decision of the court, but the ideas in those cases I believe are the earliest on what the 2nd Amendment means. They clearly show that the intent of the framers was not clear. Presser v Illinois does address who the militia is and why citizens should have weapons of war. It is a decision best read twice before being employed in a debate of your own. Overall I enjoyed the essay and I thank the OP for sharing it.
  4. My G19 serves me very well. It could just as easily be an M&P or an FN, but I went with Glock because they offered the most bang for the buck at the time. If I had to do it all over again I'd probably still choose Glock, but I'd still look at other brands. I'm not loyal to Glock, but right now it is the best platform for my needs. Now I just need a smaller gun for CCW use with tucked in shirts and slacks because that has been happening more an more lately. I'm thinking Kahr. The only handgun I had that didn't serve me well was my 1911 because it was just too pretty to use seriously. I couldn't bring myself to mess up that deep blue finish so I sold it to someone that wanted a safe queen.
  5. If anyone from the Clarksville/middle TN area wants to carpool I've pretty much made up my mind to go on Saturday. PM me if you want to join me.
  6. Good question! From the Law of Self Defense classes by Andrew Branca I remember discussing five elements needed for a legal self defense claim. They are as follows. Innocence Imminence Avoidance Reasonableness Proportionality If you didn't start the fight you are innocent. By showing your gun you could be perceived as threatening the other party or a third party could assume you are the aggressor. And you might prevent him from choosing you as his next victim. Slippery slope. If the other guy is casing you for a "possible future" attack it will be hard to convince a judge / jury that the attack was imminent. This rapidly changes when he starts walking toward you or follows you. The advice about looking for his buddy is good. If you have an opportunity for avoidance (get in car and drive away or run away), but instead consciously decided to stay in the area where you think the attack is about to happen, you are adding liability that could erode your self defense claim. Having limited mobility, escorting a family member, and being in a kill zone all detract from you ability to avoid the situation. TCA 39-11-611 is worth a read here to somewhat understand the law in TN. Reasonableness is the hardest of the five because it depends largely on the area from which the jury will be pulled that you are showing your gun in. More liberal could = less reasonable from our point of view and vice versa. You have no way to prove what this other person is thinking if they are only staring at you. Proportionality means you match lethal force paired against you with lethal force of your own with a caveat for disparity of force (multiple attackers, big attacker vs little victim, MMA fighter vs disabled...etc). Gun vs stare is not proportional. Gun vs walking at you isn't proportional unless he's a big dude and you are not and he's somehow someway threatening you in a way that you can prove in a court. Gun vs "Hey man, you got a dollar?" still isn't proportional. The race to 911 is real and I don't think it can be underestimated.
  7. I just got a Gempro 250 to replace my Lee Safety scale. My table for the scale consists of two 5 gallon buckets filled with concrete sitting one atop the other. These two buckets are perfect height when I'm sitting at my reloading bench and they offer a tremendous mass for isolating the scale from vibrations. The buckets are not connected in any way to my reloading bench, but they do sit approximately 4 inches to the left. The scale will be plugged into a surge protector and allowed to warm up prior to use. The scale will be cleaned prior to use along with the powder pan. I will use a Hornady powder trickler to fine tune charges than are dropped with a Lee Powder Measure. I hope to be able to use the wind screen that comes with the scale and I plan to use the included 20 gram check weight. I have one LED light directly over my reloading bench and two florescent lights in my shop. I am an inexperienced reloader so if there are any issues with my set up or concerns I should look into please feel free to let me know. Thanks.
  8. Flickering has returned. Happened today at the range somewhere between 2200 and 2300 rounds since fixed by Trijicon. I'll replace the battery, check the contacts, and re-zero tomorrow. I emailed Trijicon this evening to see if they will still fix it if the battery doesn't solve the issue. Update, I replaced the battery and while doing so found some corrosion that could have been the issue. No flickering problems since.
  9. In 30 years I'm sure the technology will be well past a card with your photo on it. When mine expires I'm getting the lifetime.
  10. My favorite and my EDC are one in the same, custom G19. But I also tend to side with the "respect the man with one gun" type of philosophy. My backup, custom G17, used to be my favorite and now just sits in my safe. If it wasn't filling the role of backup it would be sold.
  11. Send it back to them. Mine was doing the same thing 2000 rounds ago. No issues since.
  12. I played with some mud on my RMR today at the range and came to some conclusions. 1. As suggested, a water bottle with a hole in the cap is awesome. 2. My lens still has a haze on it after being rinsed. This haze can be wiped off. 3. Rain X is really good for the water. Still need to shoot in some rain. 4. The toothbrush and pick were not all that helpful.
  13. I like cheap Glocks. I have a hard time spending more than 500 on one and prefer closer to 400. Rifles are a different deal and basically wreck havoc on my savings.
  14. Thanks for the replies. I agree the wind is the hardest part along with me doing my part. I bought the Ballistic: AE app and I'm excited to go shoot as there is a difference in the solution in the app and what the calculator on the Berger website gave me. This app has a great many features that I'm going to have to watch some YouTube videos to get the most out of it. I think this will be a handy addition to my Kestrel.
  15. Mine is in a periforated metal container and it is very easy. Whenever I notice it is blue I pop it in the oven, wait a few hours, let it cool and then pop it back in my safe. Great product.
  16. I've had work done at Guns and Leather in Greenbriar and been happy. It took a long time to get my rifle back each time I've had a new barrel put on, but that is just another reason to get my next rifle done with a barrel nut. I have no experience with South Precision Rifles, but I will be making a drive out there when they get long action Mausingfields in stock. Their info is below. Greg Young2883 Landscape Rd.Cookeville, TN 38506 From their reputation I would not hesitate to do business with Patriot Valley Arms, but PA is a long way away.
  17. For reference I shot 18 rounds of 150 grain Winchester Deer Season XP the other day and got ES of 110 and SD of 24 from my Magnetospeed. I'd say you are doing pretty good, especially if you are happy with the groups. If not, I've heard of guys tinkering with their loads and getting the SD down in to the single digits. Hopefully I'll be there someday.
  18. I have compiled the information for a DOPE card with my .22lr trainer, but I've never done this before. If someone can review my process and maybe point out any areas I didn't think of I would greatly appreciate it. I gathered data in three ways. First, I shot groups at 30, 40, 50, and 60 meters to measure the actual bullet drop from my rifle. My rifle is zeroed at 30 meters. Second, I shot 10 rounds and recorded the velocities with my chronograph. Third, I plugged the numbers I had into the ballistic calculator from the Berger Bullets website. The DOPE card it spit out seems very close to my actual observed drop. I think the only things left to do is watch out for velocity fluctuations due to temperature variations and record the effect of wind. I also checked my scope for accurate tracking by doing a box test as well as just randomly twisting the turrets and then returning it to zero. I'm pleased enough with it's performance although an upgrade is in my future. Thanks for any help. http://
  19. I've got a spare carry gun that is functionally identical to what I carry everyday. I like having a backup of the gun I rely on everyday.
  20. I've built two. From those experiences I have decided the Magpul BEV block is a good tool and I prefer it to an upper vice block. My handguards all came with their own torque adapter. The torque wrenches in my shop came in handy. I used adjustable pliars for my castle nuts, it's not pretty, but it works.
  21. I suppose if rifles and handguns got banned these could be an option. Maybe? Do they work with pump or semiauto actions?
  22. I'm feeling a bit sick this weekend. The 31st might work for me.
