  1. In 1972, as a member of the FFA (Future Farmers of America) and a Senior in Conway High School, in Conway Arkansas my brother was awarded the American Farmer Award. The banquet and awards ceremony was held in the school cafeteria. He was presented with a Model 94 Winchester 30-30 with a color case hardened receiver and saddle ring. I'm betting you won't see that today.
  2. She originally accepted UK's generous offer and was all set to go this fall. Partially because of their top 5 ranking in addition to us having family in Lexington. She was not fond of the campus being in downtown and having to park far away and walk or catch a shuttle to the campus. She changed her mind and chose Samford for the smaller campus atmosphere, mission opportunities and general atmosphere. I wish I had never watched the movie "Taken".
  3. She visited several, applied to five, accepted at all she applied and was offered various amounts of scholarship from each. Samford in Alabama and U. of Kentucky offered the most which was equal to about half of over all tuition. That still leaves books, apartment rental, furnishings, utilities, food etc. She is going to pursue additional outside scholarships and grants as located. The rest will be student loans and Dad's pocket. I just bought a bedroom suit today for the journey to Birmingham and added it to the growing stack in my garage/shop. South College in Knoxville would have been virtually free in comparison and she could have lived at home. Although it is a good Pharm School to my knowledge, it is young yet and it does not carry the resume weight of Samford or UK. I think what bothers me the most is a 4 hour response time if my "little girl" needs me. It's a Dad thing.
  4. 34 ACT and top 2 percent nationally on her PCAT and graduating from University of the Cumberlands with a Degree in Chemistry and Microbiology with Honors and a 3.8 or 9 GPA. She attended Cumberlands at no cost due to both academic and basketball scholarships. Not sure where she got the smarts, kind of makes me wonder what my wife was up to 21 years ago. She is going to attend McWhorter School of Pharmacy for a Doctorate in Pharmacy. She did get a scholarship but it is only a fraction of the overall costs.
  5. In that I don't have a clue as to the details of this event, or how the investigative procedure is structured in South Carolina, I was simply responding in abstract as to situations involving homeowners taking defensive actions. When a homeowner is in fact being victimized by some perp, and investigating authorities make some statement in support of the homeowners actions, it can be quite comforting to the the homeowner/victim. Typically, in Tennessee, if a preliminary statement is made it would be made by the Chief Law Enforcement agent conducting the investigation. In some areas other than here, the Coroner carries much more weight and often includes a Coroners inquest. I would not expect such a public statement from a Coroner in Tennessee with our investigative / judicial structure. Again, that is under the assumption that the homeowner is in fact an innocent random victim, which may or may not be the case in this specific event.
  6. Typically, (except during the Obama administration) the DA would make the ultimate decision to prosecute and what charges if any. But it never hurts when someone in the system puts out an early public statement in support of the homeowners actions.
  7. This may be my answer...when checking Alabama DL laws it listed 6 circumstances in which one does not have to get an Alabama DL and #6 stated: Any non-resident fulltime student, properly enrolled and registered in a school, college, university, or trade school in this state, who holds a valid license from his home state or country. This exclusion was not directly stated in the carry/weapon laws I have read for Alabama but I believe I will run with this. Thanks for the replies.
  8. All good points and I appreciate the input. I only wish she was paying in state (resident) tuition and that is a great point. Unless legally required by Alabama I intend for her vehicle registration and drivers license to remain Tennessee. I know it seems like splitting hairs but if the worst were to happen and she was forced to resort to use of her weapon, I would want everything to be legal so as not to become an issue after the fact. I may be putting too much thought into it.
  9. My daughter, over 21, will be attending graduate school in Alabama. She is a Tennessee permanent resident with carry permit, yet will be residing in Alabama during semester classes and returning to Tennessee between semesters and summers. Alabama weapons laws states full recognition of other states carry permits providing individuals compliance with Alabama weapons laws. Yet it also states Alabama "Residents" must acquire an Alabama permit through the Sheriffs office of the county of residence. It also states that upon ceasing to be a resident of Alabama, that permit immediately is void. I found no definition of "resident" that really applied to such a situation. Has anyone run into this? It would seem kind of silly to have to have one in both states when there is a reciprocity agreement. I appreciate any thoughts or experience offered.
  10. So as this thread progressed I decided to get a Bersa Thunder .380 Plus that the wife and I could both make use of as well as a Ruger SR22. I followed all the area forums just in case someone put either on the market within reasonable distance. Today I went into an area shop that I enjoy and behold. There in the case was a Bersa Combat .380 though I was really looking for the "Plus" series. I decided I liked it anyway and it looked like it needed a home. Then I saw a Bersa Thunder .380 with Crimson Trace pink grips. I thought my wife would really like that and then we would not have to "share". Also, this would give the Combat a similar caliber in the household and it wouldn't feel inferior around all the other much larger calibers at home. Oh yeah, of course I had to have some extra magazines for each and about 250 rounds of ammo for breaking in, and then more for actual carry loads. Then as I reviewed my pile I remembered that I was looking for the SR22 which just happened to be at the far end of the case. Yes, it fit my hand very well and I do believe I must have one, yet after a quick calculation of what I had laying in the go home with me pile in relation to cash in my wallet, I resigned myself to the reality that I was going to have to make a second trip for the SR22. As I drove away I hoped that my wife would be pleased with the pink crimson trace grips, and remembered why I try to avoid gun shops. So, two guns, ammo, and accessories later, I am still in the market for a Bersa .380 Plus and a Ruger SR22, only now I have an empty wallet. Follow-up to above: I want to thank all those on this forum that sang the praises of the Bersa Thunders. I stepped out back and burned some ammo and have found a couple of new favorites in the Bersa Thunders. Triggers were really good in both single and double action, had no feed issues at all, and they were extremely accurate. The Crimson Trace is a nice feature and I like it but I also found the sights to be quite good as well. I give the Bersa Thunders 2 thumbs up. I will probably still get a plus series, just because, and I may well acquire one in .22 as well for I really like the fit - feel - function of them.
  11. You have embarked on a difficult journey. I have been trying to decide and a buy a .22 caliber handgun for months now. I have had several in years past both semi-auto and revolver, but have not had one in probably 20 years. First I had to decide what I wanted...then I realized that .22 handguns are like rods and reels for bass fishing...I need a different one for different applications. So now I have decided I want a Ruger SR22, Full frame SA Revolver (Uberti etc.), and a Smith & Wesson 4 to 6 inch revolver or possibly a Taurus 992 or 94. Nothing like being decisive and narrowing down the field. So then I decided I would just watch TGO classifieds and Armslist and go for what became available first at a decent price. Now I learned that people in West TN and Middle TN sell guns, people in East TN buy guns. Guess which end of the State I live in. Oh well, I really do enjoy the hunt. Good luck and I hope you are pleased with what you decide on.
  12. All my dogs, er four footed family, for the last 15 or so years have been rescues or strays. They have all been fantastic. You gotta keep him...he matches the rug.
  13. Colt Detective Special, .38, nickel. Colt 1911 .45 bring back in original holster with dress linen. (Story described in another post) Then my 1894 Winchester 30-30 that I bought new in 1977 while working the sporting goods counter for Service Merchandise. I sold it in 1986 with a half box of Super X cartridges to a co-worker who wanted it for his son. I always wished I had kept it. Fast forward to 2007 and I contacted the ex-co-worker and inquired about the 1894. He advised he had sold it to another ex-co-worker in 1987 because he had bought his son a Model 7 Remington. I tracked that guy down and learned that he had bought it just because he liked the look of "cowboy" guns and never shot it. It was under his bed still. I bought it back for what I originally sold it for and I also got the same half box of Super X cartridges. It has a forever home.
  14. I do believe that was the trailer that was used in Smokey and the Bandit.

    Gun show

The last gun show I attended I got swept more times than Grandmas front porch.
  16. I have only been in the Knoxville store about six maybe seven times since it opened. Each trip I found prices really high, service really poor, and I have yet to buy anything out of all of those trips. I finally gave up trying.
  17. Carry weapons typically remain in holster unless getting range time or periodic cleaning. When I am home I don't always have one on me, waist band holsters don't work so well if you're not wearing a waistband But generally if I am at home I am within rapid access of several strategically/discreetly placed weapons most of which are not in holsters.
  18. That's funny. I can't help but wonder where this "survey" ranked Carter.
  19. Because even the train chose not to hit that.
  20. I don't / haven't had a Taurus but the 225 should be about a half inch taller overall and approximately a half inch wider sidewall to sidewall (across). With that in mind turn your tires lock to lock and check if there is enough current clearance to allow for it. https://www.tacomaworld.com/tirecalc?tires=225-60r16-215-60r16
  21. Over the years I have seen a lot of folks with holes in them. Most that were still alive had been shot with .380, 9mm, .38 & .357. The one caliber that put the most bodies in the morgue was .22. Only once did it drop the recipient in place. The other times they ran, walked or stumbled varying distances before dropping or stopping. In every case but the one, the entry was not fatal but the .22 bounced around and hit something vital that caused their demise.
  22. You can't make this stuff up... Stupid is as stupid does and no amount of rationalization can justify what these two did. It was obviously done with the intention of eliciting the exact response that they got by this antagonistic action. These two were one wrong move from being justifiably dead. It would not have mattered if they planned to shoot, if they had reached for the sidearm or raised the muzzle of a rifle it would only have mattered that the officers believed they were going to. Stupid is epidemic in our society.
  23. The picture you posted in an older thread with your review is part of what made me seek one out. Once I found one, I had to have it. I had a brace of Early model Vaqueros in the past and they were great revolvers. However, I like this Uberti more.
