Actually there are some 38+p loads in jpg which test out quite well. It is an old but check out Lucky Gunner ammo tests Two problems with hard cast are excessive penetration and availability in factory loading There are a couple made for defense. However usually when you see a factory lead 38 it is a mild load for general use or dedicated target shooting I must also say that while having loaded many semi-was cutter bullets, they were never done with the intention of self defense. For me a 38+p jhp or go directly to 347 jhp btw, did you ever try shooting a reversed hollow base wadcutter into gel. Try it sometime. Wimpy penetration.

Oh with suppressor height sights I find the sight axis to be unnaturally high. Told you I had more opinions

One of the reasons I don’t carry the Vortex on a edc is the size of the rear plate. Have to install suppressor height sights. The American Glow Haven looks nice but suffers from the same form factor The Holosun kx2 sights are much shorter in height jmo. I have a lot of opinions. Feel free to ask

Hi’ya neighbor. Am just 20 mins up the road from you. No experience with Canik but a fair amount with red dots If you are new to handguns, just get one with the option to mount a red dot later (slide cut). Problem I have with most red dots that come on pistols is that they are cheap ones. Holosun is my fave for carry. Either 507kx2 or 407kx2. Have had both, still have the 407 (6 moa dot works best for me) My Sig p320 came with their Romeo 1 pro which is good. It took three to get one that works 100% though. Vortex Venom is nice but too big and dumb for a carry gun. Dumb as does not have auto on/off. Love the clear window and dot though Great at the range Have tried Crimson Trace and AmeriGlow. Both too cheap to consider for carry...IMO! Have looked at and shot a few others, happiest with Sig Romeo 1 and Holosun. Vortex needs badly to be updated with more features.

CAP or Child Access Protection makes it a crime to allow a child to get ahold of your firearm. Those laws exist is most states because some parent did not do their job. The type of firearm you own is inconsequential. ^as always, jmo

Two suggestions: 1- Take a actual in person hands on armed defense course in the State of Tennessee 2- Get carry insurance (hope that doesn't get me banned). Yes, it can cost you 15-20 bucks a month. What do attorneys charge an hour? I have used both "Second Call" and "USCCA", both are good. USCCA costs a lot more, ime, There are others out there, but those are the two I have used. USCCA has a regular magazine they send you which includes articles on what to do before, during and after an armed encounter. Both "Second Call" and "USCCA" gave me a card to carry imprinted with what to say to police after an incident Just in case I forget under stress. just fyi, I understand 99% of the people who read this will take neither suggestion. But at least the info is out there.

Adding to what was said already, try different ammo and springs. Not a fan of comps for any kind of carry. They can be great for competition or as a range plinker Ate you using as edc or for range? What brand and bullet weight of ammo are you using?

Red dots are the rage for sure. Personally love them for range use or competition. Warming up to Holosun on my Hellcat. Not 100% sold on their use for edc though. Sometimes I feel like taking it off and sticking with the Hellcat irons which are easy to see and use. Suspect they would be faster in a close encounter. Just sayin' might want to get better irons just to cover both bases. jmo

I would peruse YouTube for hands on reviews. I have not shot one, so have no opinion.

So there is no confusion...my comments about ORSA are about the "action pistol" range. That range requires you to be a member of ORSA and to take a safety course to use it. At GSA you just need to be a member to use their action pistol range.

Concerning only handgun in non-magnum calibers. Belonged to both ORSA and Gattlinburg Sportsman's Club. After four or five years, don't go to ORSA anymore as it is too far away (Sevierville). With that said, you have greater flexibility for setting up steel or USPCA/IDPA cardboard targets at ORSA. GSA setup is fairly static but still very nice. I have spent many a morning out there chronographing or just trying out different rounds plinking steel. Usually I am the only person there (weekday mornings). There is a little flexibility in target setup at GSA but your not going to move around like on a IDPA/USPCA course. You can that with ORSA, IF qualified. Right, point is when carried un-holstered in a pocket it is free to slosh around with the trigger unprotected from being accidentally pulled by the user or some other object. Ruger provides a basic soft sleeve which they recommend using. I recommend something sturdier. Edit: The op mentioned the LCP ii. That is not a DAO pistol. It has a trigger similar to a Glock. The original LCP had a heavy DAO trigger. If you feel safe with a Glock you should feel safe with the LCP ii trigger.

If you have a decent holster, leather or kydex, which covers the trigger it is safe, imo. But note the "decent holster" bit. Throw it your pocket without a holster and all bets are off. But that would be true for pretty much any semi-auto I can think of. I have my LCP ii in a iwb kydex holster and years later am still free of errant holes in my legs or crotch area. It is my second choice carry next to a S&W snubbie 38 (custom leather owb holster or iwb kydex). Third is a Hellcat (DeSantis owb leather). These are all high quality holsters While I have used the soft sided "sticky" type holsters they are only passable but not as good as a kydex or stiff leather holster, imo. Again, if it is in a good holster, you should be gtg. For those who may be hearing impaired, "IF IT IS IN A GOOD HOLSTER..."

Another vote for the Holosun 407kx2/507kx2 red dots Personally, i like the 6 moa dot only...but your preferences may differ.
