  1. Huntsville is a good place to get a good overview of what Ham Radio is about if you can make the trip. I have been going each year for over 40 years.
  2. I don"t believe the Outback in Jackson has had a sign in years, if it does it is well hidden.
  3. I bought a few of the camo'd 50 cal cans at tsc in Milan after Christmas on sale for $7.99. China made but looked and felt like the mil versions.
  4. I ordered this last night, got a confirmation of the order and a ship date of 3-5 days. Received a notice of cancellation today stating that the supplier could not deliver the backorder. I guess they are living up to their reputation.
  5. Yes, the Baofengs can be programmed for receive only with the software (memory channels). They will still transmit in VFO mode if a frequency is entered even if locked out via the programmed memories.
  6. My 1989 k5 Blazer had the same issue. Problem was rust in the auto mechanism from water entering. I removed the locking parts, cleaned and relubed. It has worked fine ever since.
  7. It looks like the same condition my dog has. The Vet says it is an allergy. We had him tested and he is now taking allergy shots. Be prepared to spend some serious money if that turns out to be the case and you decide to have her  treated. My dog showed to be highly allergic to mulberry trees, some grasses  and other stuff to a lesser extent.
  8. I saw my first live one last week when I let the dog out at night. Those rascals can run pretty fast with a large dog after them.
  9. The drivers in windows 7 would not work but I loaded an older version for programming purposes and had no issues. Apparently the the US chip maker tried to make it more difficult for the Chinese ripoffs in the offshore built usb to serial cables. Yours could be different .
  10. Does anybody have any info or recommendations on this shop, I am interested in using them if I can get a good feeling about them.
  11. Likely your programming problem on the Baofeng radios is the driver for the chip in the cable. The counterfit Prolific chip in the chinese cables will not work with the latest drivers. They work fine using an older driver. I don't remember the version offhand, maybe 5.0. I had the same problems at first. Lots of good info on the web.   Extra class ham here,  40+ years in ham radio.
  12. I see a web page for Deans Gun Restorations in Jacksboro Tn, and have seen recomendations on CMP forums. I have been considering having mine rebarreled for some time.   I wonder if anyone has had any experience with this shop.
  13. I know from experience (a bad one) that you can follow the proper steps and still get into trouble. In my case I wanted to load some 100 gr short jacket rounds in .30 carbine. I found load data in my volume II Hornady Handbook for Unique powder which I had on hand. I now know this is not a good application for this powder but I did not at the time.   The min load in this manual is 7.6 gr, the max shown is 8.9 gr. I loaded close to the min. but did not try them for some time. When I finally shot some of them they did not cycle the action well so I "assumed" they were under powered. I let my Grandson shoot a couple of rounds but cycling problems caused him to loose interest and leave.   The first round fired after he left resulted left me with a splintered stock, a cracked receiver and a cracked barrel on a Plainfield copy of a military M1 carbine. I also had a very sore hand but no injury other than that. I am thankful it was me and not my Grandson.   My immediate thought was that I had screwed up loading and had caused the mishap that way. I went home and pulled some bullets and weighed charges on a 10 rounds and checked them against the load data and all was correct. I then suspected the weapon. I went to the internet and researched the Unique load for the carbine and found that a loads shown were in the 4 to 6 grain range. Hornady had screwed up in this loading manual (granted it was published in 1975 when I started loading and probably been corrected long ago. My event happened in 2013). I also pulled the remaining rounds that I had loaded to prevent anyone every using the even though I no longer have anything in that caliber.   The lesson learned from this for me was to cross check new loads even from reputable sources with other data to verify that it makes sense.   My loads were almost double the recommended, and likely the cycling issues were due to the nature of the pistol powder used.   I thought I would share this, maybe it will give others a thought to double check the data. I do have pics of the damaged carbine but am not up to speed on posting them.
  14. The L series Kubota is a great  small tractor but it has a narrow wheelbase. I gets me nervous on inclines more than my old 3000 Ford.   The hydrostatic drive is great, highly recommended.
  15. I have a Kubota L3200, 4wd, hydrostatic drive with loader, the 4wd is essential on this tractor because you can lose traction on the rear wheels with a full loader even with weight on the rear.   I really like the utility if this tractor (2012 model). The main drawbacks are it is relatively light and also narrow making rollovers on slopes more likely than on my old 3000 Ford.    The hydro drive and the power steering with R4 tires make this an easy tractor to operate, I chose Kubota after looking closely at JD and others. I  bought it with the skid steer quick detach feature on the loader and use it with qd pallet forks to save a lot of heavy lifting.

    West Tn

I think you probably intended to say Oakland instead of Oakfield, not many big houses in Oakfield although these back country roads now have a lot of traffic. A lot more than when I grew up in Deanburg, of course the roads there were all gravel way back then.
  17. I believe that if you research the Baofeng radios you will find that they are FCC type approved (not accepted) and as such be legal for use on the MURS frequencies.
  18. Paul Latham's BBQ is good. I don't know if it is the best. His business is located about a mile north of I-40 exit 82. (US 45 North). On the left going north across from a ambulance station and park entrance.   I think his hours are 7 AM till 7 PM on Sat.   You will always get a lot of food for the price. I know he has BBQ, chicken, ribs as well as vegetables. It is a country store/meat market type business. It is very busy weekdays with construction and similar blue collar customers.   You usually get a lot of food for the price.   If you stop you will probably like it.
  19. Ice forming on trees and vehicles  north of Jackson (Madison County). Roads are wet but no ice yet.
  20. I am in for a lower, interested in a upper also depending on price. I would need a west tn transfer agent.
  21. I just upgraded my membership after 40+ years of annual subscription. I was not able to make the link accept my correct account number and had to do it by phone.   The rep at the membership number would only talk about the $600 rate, when I insisted the rep  transferred me to customer service where it was handled with no problem.  This rep  stated the offer was good until Feb 28.
  22. Actually it is part 90 accepted and  the most common interpretation of the rules is that it is ok for part 95 requirements since the part 90 requirements exceed those of 95, technically not legal for FRS only (I believe) due to the removable antenna. Power levels are adjustable. Licenses required for most (not all) frequencies.   I agree with your statement on FRS legality because it does not meet all of the requirements.
  23. The Baofeng radio you show is a good wide coverage radio for the price. I have two of them and am surprised at what they do. They cover vhf/uhf ham and commercial frequencies including the frs and murs  frequencies that do not require a license. They are however not very user friendly either to use or to program. Programming can be done from the front panel but programming cables and software is available that makes the task easier.   I would only recommend them if you are willing to spend some time researching the radio. Lots of information on the internet if you search.  They also receive commercial FM radio and have a built in flashlight.   This radio will transmit and receive on any frequency in its range so someone can get into trouble if not used properly. I can be programmed with receive only channels with no problem to solve this issue.   I hope this helps.
  24. I am not sure where you are considering moving to. Henderson Tn. is in Chester County, not Henderson County. Lexington would be Henderson Co. As to the perk test I suggest that you contact the Health department of the county you are considering. They did the test for me before approving a field system many years ago. They would accept the test by a Civil Engineer also at the time I built my house (Madison Co.).
