I think we need to file a "Friend of the Court" brief. In establishments that post, I would suggest they install metal detectors, if they ban licensed carry, who is going to counteract the illegal guns inside, if their servers are so scared of handguns, shouldn't we help them be less fearful?

From the Channel 5 story:

"Putting a sign up that says, 'Don't come in -- if you're one of these people' is generally thought of as being pretty bad for business," said Nashville attorney and gun law opponent, Tom Lee."

Finally something comes out (probably by accident) that tells the whole truth behind this effort. They do not want to have to identify as antis and chase away business. They are gutless wonders, without the courage of their convictions. Don't want my gun to come in? Then you don't want my money to come in either. Up to now, they could hide behind the law. Now, they will be like the roaches they are when the light is shined on them--they will scurry for cover. The right side won. Get over it and get on with your life. Yet another day will pass with no incidents from the Chicken Little school of life.

What if the building just says "No firearms allowed" in a little vinyl sticker and that's it? I mean, I know about the "substantially similar" crap, and I've read on it, but I just wish it would say:

Do: <Insert things here>

Don't Do: <Insert things here>

While the intention of the owner might be clear, there is no doubt now that a sign with the words "No Firearms Allowed" and nothing else and no international no symbol would not be a legal posting IMO.

It does not contain that the property is posted per TN law as required in 39-17-1359(;)(3)(B)(i) or that possession is a criminal offense as required in 39-17-1359(B)(3)(B)(iii) and IMO it is iffy whether it meets 39-17-1359(B)(3)(B)(ii) that requires stating where possession is prohibited. But even if it does meet that requirement, it still doesn't meet the other two.

It's nice to now be legal when I carry at these places again in Memphis! Hurt tourism? Don't visit NYC where people can carry in bars and nightclubs if they have a license and can drink....don't go to Florida...where you can carry in a restaurant and drink...dont go to Orange Beach where you can carry in restaurants and bars and drink...same for Hot Springs and restaurants...the casinos in Mississippi...Reno and Las Vegas bars and restaurants and I believe you can drink there too...hmmm a lot of scared people...those are some busy tourist spots.

And VA has passed concealed carry in restaurants finally, but maybe the law isn't officially in effect yet there.

edit: oops, posted before reading GKar's post.

July 1, law goes into effect.

So is it in effect here now? If not when? Thanks

They seem to think all the tourists and conventions come from places like IL, NYC, NJ, MD, etc. I doubt the residents of the other 42 states even give it a second thought.

Exactly TNReb. This has been Rayburn's angle all along. He doesn't want to post! He wants his cake and to eat it too...as it were. He and his cronies are all a bunch of chickensh#ts.

I completely welcome a business to post their property. It is the idea of some kind of 'movement' of anti's running around trying to convince properties to post just to further their agenda that drives me nuts. I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens.

You know its almost funny with the statement of " It will run the tourist and conventions off " the number one tourist and convention distention in the USA is Orlando Fl. and they have had carry in Restraints that serve alcohol since 1997 and there business had more then doubled in the past 13 years all one has to do is check the stats and see that road to the antis is BS period

Has anyone been able to correctly determine when this is law will actually go into effect? I keep seeing different times and it is important to be sure before we start carrying into restaurants. I have seen July 1st and also as soon as the bill is assigned a number.

Haven't followed this as closely as I should have but I thought it was when they vetoed it (at least I hope so since I carried into Outbacks last night):dropjaw:

I can say for sure it is NOT July 1 The ones saying that are looking at the main bill and the amendments that were passed.

As far as whether it was Friday night (which is my thought) or not until the Secretary of State assigns a Public Chapter number...still not sure and probably no one out there can give a for sure answer.

I saw a piece in the paper saying it should be official later this week.

House overrides Bredesen's gun bill veto

Todd said it's not certain yet exactly when the new law will take effect.

"The bill must be engrossed by the clerks' offices and then be sent to the secretary of state to be assigned a public chapter number. That process will take a few days, possibly by the end of next week," Todd said.

I saw this on the TFA's forum today.

I just called the Secretary of State's office and spoke to a man named Richard in the office which assigns TCA numbers. He said that SB-3012 takes effect July 1. I informed him on the above posting, but he said the original bill language said July 1 which is what their office was going by. This definitely needs clarification!

I just got off the phone with Rep Todd, nice guy by the way, and the bill has to be engrossed by the engrossing clerk with all the required signatures, then it will go into effect, it doesn't have to wait until a later date, but we do have to wait until this process is complete, which will be next week.

DO NOT CARRY YET.

Also, Rep Todd believes that the lawsuit by the restaurant folks will go no where.

I posted this back on post #128. Here it is again.
