HCP Renewal?

Recommended Posts

This may have been addressed in another thread but, does anyone renew their HCP by mail or just go to the DL testing center? I've always gone to the DL center because I had to renew my DL along with my permit but this time my permit is due a year before my DL. My permit is due 10-28-10 and I was thinking about mailing it but I wont have the reciept that acts as my permit if they don't renew it before October.

Just asking for suggestions.

I believe some folks have posted that they did receive a paper renewal receipt when they did their HCP renewal online, but seems they may have had to call once it seemed they wouldn't get it by the time the old one expired. Seems as if it's not automatic you get one, although don't take this as gospel, and I'm sure others will chime in.

It seems that a renewal almost ALWAYS takes longer than an original permit, as they seem to give it a lower priority or something -- for that reason, I'm sure I'll do it in person when the time comes, just so for sure I have receipt and won't care how long it takes.

I renewed mine by mail last time. One suggestion: If you renew by mail, send it off the day you get it. Don't wait until your permit is almost ready to expire. My renewal took over 90 days and the extension letter you get is only good for 90 days and they will not issue a second extension letter.

Ah. Did you get the extension letter automatically, or you have to get in touch?

The extension letter comes automatically a few days after they receive your renewal check. The letter is deceptive. It doesn't say, or at least mine didn't, anywhere on the letter that it's only good for 90 days. I found that out by calling the Dept of Safety.

Why the hell don't they just send you a receipt instead?

Since it's good for no matter how long.

You can't renew it online as the application has to be completed, and as much as I would like to think that the State of TN has advanced enough technologically to put the application online, they have not.

You either have to go to a DL Testing Station or call and ask them to send you an application, which you can mail back with your check. I chose the former and was in and out in 15 minutes.

Did my last renewal by mail. Took almost 6 months. I got the letter shortly after sending the renewal and my check in. After waiting about 5 months, I called and the woman said that as long as I had the letter with my expired HCP, it was good for as long as it took them to renew it.

I don't think it is they can't put it online, it is that it has to be signed.

Yes, I know there is a law that says a electronic signature is as legal as a physical one, but guess they want the physical one.

I have always gone to the DL station so as to have leave with the receipt in hand.

I know previously that to renew you had to supply proof of citizenship, i.e. birth certificate, etc. and that was the reason I would not have renewed by mail as you wouldnt get the birth certificate back. Has the law, requirements changed now? It seemed stupid that you had to once again prove you were a citizen after the first issuance. If it has been changed someone finally got something right. I've been in Iraq so excuse me for not being up on current changes. Thanks

So if I go to the DL center and renew, I can just pay $50 cash there and they'll take care of the rest as mailing it off and etc, and I'm not gonna worry about anything except the timeframe and the receipt on hand, right?

Well I got lazy last week and mailed it off, I already got the letter so that was quick. I would think they would prefer people mail it to reduce traffic at the DL centers. Once they have your application, and you're already in the system you would think renewal would be alot faster than a first time permit. I've had mine sisce 98 and renewals only took a month so far, I'll see how long mailing takes.

That's exactly what I did in July. My permit expires in Dec.

I applied for a duplicate about 5 weeks ago. Still no sign of it in the mail. Anyone else gotten a duplicate? How long did it take? Didnt take but a few days for my check to clear bank but still no permit.

Been reported here often takes as long as a renewal permit itself, when ordered separately from time of original HCP or HCP renewal.

Holy thread resurection Batman.

Well, I was lazy back on July 31 and mailed in my HCP renewal, I know I said I was going to the DL center but I figured I would get it eventually and sure enough I got my new permit in the mail today less than 2 months. That's the fastest I've ever gotten it back. Now I don't have to worry about it till 2014. YEE HAA.
