Weird .22 ammo thing

So I was at Academy in Knoxville yesterday and noticed they had a couple of different brands/types of .22 ammo behind the customer service counter.  Along with the Aguila that is around $5 a box and the target stuff that is probably even higher, they had a decent stack of American Eagle .22LR ammo for $2.19 a box.  That seemed like a decent price so I picked up a couple of boxes (two per customer being the limit.)  I was looking at the boxes after I made my purchase, in the parking lot on my way to my truck, and thought the boxes seemed smaller than usual.  My first thought was that maybe they were really stuffing the rounds in there in order to save on packaging but on further inspection I found that (in tiny, little print) the label said they were 40 round boxes.  Huh?  Why?  I guess that still isn't a bad price in today's market but at $2.19 that works out to about 5.7 cents a round and would be roughtly $2.73 for a 50 round box.  Not really that much difference in price for ten more rounds so why not just stick with 50 round boxes and sell them for$2.70 or even  $2.75 or so?  It makes no sense, to me.  Anyhow, just thought I would alert my fellow TGO members to watch for such things when buying ammo.

Thanks for the insight about the number of rounds in the boxes but I think we have all seen things like that and not in ammo so much yet but in the food industry it has been running wild. You buy a box of Mac and Cheese Velvetta brand and compare it to a box you may have bought 6 months ago and your paying the same price for less product. I have been seeing that in many many products in stores these day. Companies have been down sizing product packaging yet still charging same or higher prices. I wonder how many people have noticed that with out saying much about it.................. :shrug: :shrug:

Yes, I have noticed packaging sizes and content weights changing at the grocery. As I do the shopping, I get to see all these things. And although I haven't

seen any of the 40 round 22 boxes yet, I have been hearing of them from a few people/

 

Sign of the times I guess.

 

On the subject of 22, AIM Surplus has Geco 22 for 4.95/50 rounds.

 

Some will consider it too high, but I just ordered 5 bricks for 261 shipped. Works out to 9.6 cents per round.

 

Yes...some 22 can be found cheaper, but I did this sitting on my butt and not running around wasting time and gas. Plus, I wanted to try some of the Geco.

Just a new way to screw the public by giving them less for more. Walmart is good at that, they put their brand right next to the national brand at a much cheaper price. What you fail to notice is their brand is a few ounces less. So you buy their brand to save money, but in the end you pay about the same for a lesser product.
