Or so they thought.

The couple reached Camp 4, the final camp, at 3,000 feet below the summit, before both suffered from high-altitude pulmonary edema, colloquially known as altitude sickness. It caused fluid to build up in Strydom’s brain, which killed her Saturday. Gropel, alive but fighting a fluid buildup in his lungs, had to be taken down the mountain by sled

Not sure exactly what the vegan part of the story had to do with anything except their desire for publicity. Mountains kill indiscriminately.

The stereotype is that vegans are malnourished and therefore not as capable of physical performance as an omnivore. It's because of that stereotype that motivated them to climb the 7 mountains. They were trying to prove a point that got them dead.

19 died on the mountain last year. Idiots think it's like going to the beach I guess.

Probably misunderstood one of the survivors from before who described the climb as "It was a sum beach!".

They were climbing for the sole purpose to prove "vegans can do anything" with their hashtag and all...

So of the hundreds of people who've died trying to summit Everest, including a large number of world class mountaineers, that 2 of them also happened to be vegan seems completely irrelevant.  Best I recall, there's a sign at camp 4 that says something like 1 in 4 people who leave here will die.

Yeah, I can see where that hashtag didn't work out so well for them on the expedition. Shame really but Everest as has already been pointed out doesn't care who or what you are or believe its just waiting patiently to build up the body count. What's not commonly known even though its been reported that mountain is littered with frozen bodies of climbers it claimed. Its so bad you can't climb w/o seeing dead climbers.

I have no idea how much experience or how skilled these folks were at the 8k level, but one of the main reasons why the death rate on Everest is so high are the guided climbs.  The amount of support you get and the sheer number of people who successfully summit leads some to believe it's like taking a strenuous hike.  They don't call 8000 meters "the death zone" for nothing, high altitude sickness can kill virtually anyone, and those mountains are notorious for uncertain weather.  The proliferation of guided attempts means a lot more unqualified people are attempting these climbs, it's inevitable that many won't make it.

Seen on CNN that one of the 4 was a triathlete and he ended up having a heart attack on his way back down the mountain... at least he got to see the top.  Getting knocked off at the base camp would really suck.
