'Possum in the henhouse, but not THAT 'Possum.
hipower replied to Timestepper's topic in General Chat
Not nearly as good as these stories, but I got a little one to tell. We have a neighbor who likes to feed the roaming possums around us. H seems to think they are cute. There's an old fence line sorta katty-cornered about 75 yards away that is between our properties. He's been dumping table scraps out there for over a year to feed them. So of course, every one in the area comes in to feast every night. About 2 am some time back, our dog was raising a ruckus to get outside. Thinking she just needed to potty, I let here out the door and watched her tear out heading for the front of the house. Knowing this wasn't her usual potty area, I followed her. Grabbing a flashlight, I stumbled out to hear what sounded at that time; like a huge fight. She was growling and snarling like crazy. And I could hear some almost hissing sounds. Found her with a possum caught up against a foundation vent screen. Both were eyeballing each other pretty hard and getting louder. Thinking the possum's behavior a little odd, and fearing a rabid one; I grabbed my dog by the collar, took her inside and grabbed a little Model 60. By this time my wife is up, wondering and worrying about what's going on. I just say I gotta shoot a possum. Looking rather puzzled and concerned, she follows me out. Dang. This short tale sure got long. Sorry. I get back around front and sure enough, the possum is still there. So I shine my flash in his eyes and pop a wadcutter at the base of his skull and neck. That little 38 w/c sure makes a lot of noise at 2 in the morning. Lights start pooping on around us so I think we should go back inside, so I to leave it and clean it up in the morning. Some of our neighbors aren't to gun friendly. Especially at that hour. Anyway, later that morning, my young neighbor comes down and says he found some large marble sized dropping in his garage, followed them and found a litter of young possums in his garage. Being a concerned animal lover, he called Animal Control to come and get them out. Evidently I had gotten the mother. And he being such a sound sleeper hadn't heard the 38. Since he didn't mention it, I let it go by that I'd shot one earlier. He said that his wife had really been upset at finding them in their garage, and really came down hard on him feeding the little critters. Anyway, he's stopped dumping scraps there. And I've convinced him to clean up that fence row. We still have some around, but now I use the Ruger 22/45 and the Augila subsonic to dispatch them. It doesn't seem to upset the neighbors as much. I told them it was a pellet pistol, like the Gammo rifle I shoot in the back yard. That sucker is loud. It actually sounds like a 22lr round going off. -
The blued MKIII I have has the same stamping on it. Mine was acguired in a trade, but it did have a little bag with a short rail and screws with it. The orgional owner had bought it to use as a trail and hiking gun, but decided it was too nice looking to scuff up while hiking. So we did a little dealing. I have several Ruger 22 models. They all look "pretty," but they all get shot. And sooner or later, mine, if not all of them, will get some dings in it.

I personally have never mistaken another car for mine. Really. Never, never, never....well almost never.

As usual, Ann Coulter hits the bullseye. Very well stated points.

Thank you for this posting. I have no words for this, only tears as I read. A belated and far away "Thank you" to Col. Howard. My he rest eternally in peace. -
Thanks for the information. I was curious about the pricing. I have an older MKIII Hunter with the 5", and was kind of thinking about getting the new, longer barrel version and selling mine. And yes, my MKIII came with the rail and mounting screws. If Acadamey can't help you with them, call Ruger about it.

    Good on you, sir!

True, But how do you verify if real or repro with it that rusted up?
-
Congratulations. I'm sure you'll love it. That's a great find. Do you mind telling us the Academy pricing?

To quote the "Parson"

Actually sounds to me like they were both extreme liberals and just took the laws into their own hands. After all, you can't think about doing something to someone without punishment.

Last March, when I sent mine in for a refund, a receipt showing amount and place of purchase was requested. So this is new.

One of the early problems I read about, and saw some pictures of, concerned the cast slides fracturing. Some during use. One incident had pictures of a slide that separated during a range session and quite literally broke cleanly across the ejection port. The break looked like a very clean line, no splintering that I could see. What freaked me was that the break was so uniform, it looked like a machined cut. And like crude pot-metal. The man firing this pistol sustained quite a bit of facial damage according to the posting I read this in. And was supposedly one of the first to cause major problems for Caracal.

Refund. Absolutely, no questions at all. Google the Caracal litany of problems. It will take all day to read the articles and threads on different forums. In a nutshell, it started with possible fires if dropped, went to other trigger safety issues, frame cracks, slide cracks and faulty manufacture during casting, to finally catastrophic failures when firing. Just too many issues to really feel comfortable in keeping the pistol for me. I believe initially, the recall centered around the F model, but the last online statement I read from Caracal several months back indicated they were recalling all products and would stop sales altogether.

And just about as likely. -
Not really surprising with predator/scavenger birds. Although not as impressive as the eagle's hunt; watching the Coopers' Hawks hunt in my yard is really entertaining. I've seen them carry off snakes from the creek, dive on crawdads and tear them apart on the banks, and laughed my butt off watching one try to carry away a squirrel caught out in the open and picked up. That squirrel was twisting and chattering, finally got loose and fell about 10 feet, but the hawk banked, came back and snagged him again; getting his talons in really good this time and flying away with it.

Beautiful gun. A wonderful gift and keepsake.

By all means go for it. Although I haven't personally shot a 1911 in 40, I have a friend in Georgia who thinks it's the best thing since JMB's little design came out. Just absolutely loves his Kimber and says it is his favorite round.

I'll second trying a Shield. I love mine, so much I bought a second for my wife. I find it easy to hold and shoot. Felt recoil is absolutely amazing. And by that I mean very light. The lightest of any of the subcompacts, pocket, and mini 9s I've tried. And for accuracy....wonderful. I'm an average shooter, and that's on a good day. On my last outing, at 15 yards, I literally fired out the X in the 10-ring. Maybe not great for some of you guys, but it impressed the hell outta me. But by all means try shooting it first if you can. In my limited experience; it's been a love it or hate it kind of gun. Doesn't seem to be much common ground between the two feelings.
-
Don't joke about that. It'll happen sooner than you might think. Trust me. I know from experience.

Pardon me. I clean forgot to tell you. Got rid of the G32 in a trade, but got a 357 sig barrel for one of my XD pistols. Took it out to a friend of my brother-in-laws farm and really tore up an old tv. Actually didn't take more than a few rounds. Of course the first shot totaled the screen and tube, but it was satisfying to run a few rounds thru the chassis as well. To make it a bit more sporting, we were shooting at 50 yards, and since I can barely see that far; it was a lot of fun. For me, the best thing about the 357 round is that satisfying boom and visible flame in the evening. Does kinda play havoc with the night vision though. My thanks again for them.

Welcome to the asylum, friend. As with the rest of the inmates here, I congratulate you for your First, and probably of several more to come. It seems to be the rare person who can and does have only 1 1911. They truly are addictive. My recommendation, start saving now. And get one in 9mm. They are awesome.

I wouldn't say all the good ones are in East Tn or Kentucky...but there sure seem to be quite a few of them getting attention lately.

GREAT!! I actually laughed aloud for that one.
