  1. I saw them while flying into Detroit one winter night.  We circled around over Lakes Erie and Huron in a holding pattern to land from the north.  Thankfully the pilot told us to have a look out the right side of the plane as the faint green glow of the borealis was visible on the horizon.  Pretty cool.
  2.     I agree, but getting to that point was probably pretty enteraining.
  3. Either on my belt or in my pocket, depending on various things.  Though I'll be honest and say I'm pretty lax about carrying at home.  If I've been out somewhere, sometimes I'll leave the gun on, sometimes I put it away.  With 2 little kids, I'm not comfortable storing them anywhere but on me or in the safe.
  4. That might be the best one yet. Nice! No... no "might" about it. That is the best one so far.
  5.     Exactly.  I'd bet my wife's Shield has the same or less recoil and certainly less muzzle flip than my big ass Ruger P85.
  6. On a couple of occasions, I've pondered whether I was desperate enough to try shooting there.  This confirms my decision that I wasn't.
  7. Thoughts and prayers for you and your family.  Sorry for your loss.
  8. If y'all come east, I'll try to meet up. The XT doesn't do road trips real well.
  9. Take her to a range with rentals. Bring a few friends so there's plenty for her to try.
  10. People are strange. Very little surprises me anymore.
  11. Coworker has one of those and said it worked reasonably well. A Dutch oven is certainly better, but much less portable, if that matters.
  12. Trail mix.   And I don't have any in the house now for that very reason.  I try not to snack at all, but a handful (or 2, or 3... ) of peanuts or almonds usually hits the spot.  I have a birthday of significant coming up and I'm trying to reach a weight goal by then, though I seem to have stalled out over the last couple weeks.  Kid's birthday cake followed by a gifted cheesecake didn't help I'm sure.
  13. I'll agree that the pocket clip is really stiff.  It takes a pretty firm grip and a tug to get it on/off.  Maybe it'll loosen up with some use.  If not, I'll take it off.    The fasteners on the clip are mini torx...  T4 or T6, I think.  Hardware stores should have a set in that size.
  14.     Right.  People get all would up about barrels... cold hammer forged, chrome vanadium, ...   Is a hunk of chrome vanadium steel that gets cold hammer forged into a barrel really significantly better than a hunk of chrome vanadium steel that gets extruded into seamless tubing?  Functionally, probably not.  They both go through similar initial cold forming processes to turn that big hunk of metal into something resembling a barrel and then similar final processes to ream the barrel and cut the rifling.  One gets the bore rough drilled while the other has it extruded.  The directional properties of the steel do end up a little different.  Does that matter with regard to surface wear?  Maybe a little.  Something that a national match or F-class shooter might care about, but completely meaningless to the average shooter.
  15.     Nah.... needs more black.  Black forks, black mirrors, black valve covers... :)
  16. Best chicken livers I've ever had came from The Beacon in Spartanburg.    But as has been stated, given that it's the body's filter and retains all the bad stuff, I consider chicken livers to be a very rare treat.
  17.     Yep.   Try this with your belt....    Pinch/squeeze it across it's width with your thumb and forefinger as hard as you can.  Does it collapse?  Unless you've got vice grips for hands, it shouldn't.  My 8 year old, daily worn Beltman belt barely does... less than 1/8".    Most dress belts will fold completely in half with relative ease.  That's the difference.
  18. Cool looking pig sticker!   Educate me on the purpose of the cut on the spine running toward the tip.  It looks neat and I see that on lots of knives but don't know why its there.
  19. Oh. Hail. Yeah. And what's especially nice is it came on a very rare day where I got home before my wife and got the mail. So no long explanation required. :)
  20. heh.... I got one of these.... http://www.amazon.com/Caldwell-Super-Plus-Recoil-Shield/dp/B001C5XOJQ   Between the 91/30, M48, and K31... those metal butt pads are rough.  I typically do fine until that one shot where I don't have it pulled in quite tight enough.  Once it bites you the first time, every shot after that just freakin' hurts.
  21.         Yep.  A good gun belt that's reasonably snug.  If the butt of the gun is flopping out, your belt isn't stiff enough.  If your pants are falling off, it's not tight enough.

    Garand Help!?

    Nice!
  23. Welcome!
  24. Cool.  I'd like to add an Enfield to my meager collection.  Has availability of .303 ammo improved?  Last I looked what little was out there was $1/shot.  Perhaps that's the new norm...
