1911 Grips

I’ve been making 1911 grips for a few years now after I got tired of not getting what I truly wanted from other sites. I recently started playing with fractal burning for cutting boards and what not, so I decided to try it on some grips. I pulled out a set of oak stave and walnut to see how the 10k volts react to the different woods. What are your thoughts? Should I do a resin fill to give them some color? I’ve been a fan of walnut and blue but it may be a bit flashy for my carry pistols.

Those look really good.  The set on the left I thinks looks good as is.  The set on the right is kinda dark.  A colored resin would lighten them up and probably look pretty damn cool.

My vote-looks great as is no color needed-

But like everything it's a personal choice-

I have a neighbor who does fractal burning. I remember when he started. He took apart a microwave I think it was to get the parts to do it. I remember thinking this fool is gonna electrocute himself. He hasn't yet. I think he bought an actual machine to do it with now. Pretty neat stuff.

I think your grips look better without the colored resin added.

I kind of dig the fractal burns as they are with out any fill to give a little purchase to the grips.

I saw all the videos on scavenging parts from a microwave but I’m not willing to risk that. I went a slightly more safe way with a neon light transformer.

agreed, very unique look. I only have a Para 14.45 but otherwise I would be in.

The blanks have been stabilized in cactus juice before I made them. I do this with all the grips I make. 2 hours under vacuum through a few bleed cycles and 24 to soak in the resin.

There is an extra tab near the top corner on the Para otherwise they are the same. I haven't had the grips off in a while and can't remember what it covers but it has to be there.

I appreciate it, I keep around 50 or so species of wood in the shop myself. Not working in Atlanta anymore limits what I can put my hands on here in Clarksville. I’m a fan of getting to see all aspects of a block before buying, I’ve been disappointed a few too many times from online warehouses.

if any of my scraps are big enough for knife of grips I normally save them. And I have a nice collection of figured material.
