  1. All good points guys. We survived 12 days without power during Katrina and it was so danged hot I never got hungry. Ice may be a luxury to some, but ice water and iced tea are great. We bought a counter model  ice maker at Sam's that you pour water in and in 6-7 minutes you have ice, I have tried this in my truck using an inverter so no power I gonna have Iced tea! We lost our power this morning for about 2 hours and I had already made a plan to bring generator from barn for the fan on ashley wood heater, it will put out some heat without the fan but not like it does with it. We have had some portable battery powered lights like for camping for years and they work great, these have loops on top to hang on a shower curtain for bathroom duty,  candles are too danged dangerous. You need to get all you gear out and put it to the test a few times prior to needing them in the middle of the night. We have propane coleman stove for cooking plus plenty of propane, generator for freezer if in summer and for wood heater in winter. A good supply of firewood, of course food, water. A good thing for everyone to have is a life straw water filter 1 for each member of family. I take one when I kayak, you can get mighty sick drinking contaminated water and this doesn't require boiling. For toilet you can use a 5 gallon bucket with trash bag in emergency. We decided that if the power stayed off we would curtain off the staircase and just stay downstairs, my wife had bought several of the clear shower curtain liners for this purpose. Use these power outages as a test of your preparedness, make notes on what you need to change. Be safe in all this slick stuff.
  2. I know this is from last year, but if all this danged snow melts I plan on being in the turkey woods and will try these out. I have to tell a story about several years ago a buddy and me went bass fishing and he never loads the boat back onto the trailer without a light and he had given me some skin so soft cause the skeeters were tearing us a new one. Well when I got home my wife smelled the sss and asked "well did you get any"? I said hey baby you need to get some of that from your Avon lady cause the skeeters won't touch you. It was our first experience with sss, danged suspicious women!!
  3. Now according to those maps Fl is in the lead, but I certainly wouldn't live there. Way too many people from yankee land, there are more elderly people in FL from NY,NJ and Mass than in the states they left. I am happily content right here!! If I have to move it would be out west Idaho, Wyoming, Utah.
  4. I would think your best bet is to got to an IPSC  shoot somewhere close to you and most guys use a fiber optic, that is what I have on my Para and you can interchange different colors for what best works for you. It draws my eye to the front sight, before I didn't know I had a front sight.
  5. Great test. I know sometimes the gun greases/oils we use will get mighty stiff in cold temps. I have seen 1911's that you could literally watch the slide go back and forth. But you can always warm your hands on the barrel shroud!!
  6. My water in walkout basement was froze up yesterday morning, I forgot to drip the faucets and the water line is on outside walls. If you can get to the store for parts I highly recommend using the new pex pipe with sharkbite fittings. I had a break under kitchen sink last year and it was so unbelievably easy to fix. A plumber friend said he had never seen it freeze and bust. We had an emergency eye wash/shower that was fed water with pex that I forgot to shut off, it broke 1.25" galvanized pipe and only swelled up the pex. It is so much easier that pvc it isn't funny. You can patch pvc, cpvc, copper and I think npt pipe.
  7. I had a good friend back in Ms. that had a range for years that I was contemplating buying. 1 very possible issue is the EPA and lead. I have heard of several ranges being shut down for lead contamination and such. Just another issue to look at. Good luck, I am not all that crazy about the range set-up either. unless you have a whole lot of people shooting at once I would have a 100 yd rifle, 200 yd rifle if possible and 2-4 25 yd pistol bays maybe a 50 yd also. When I go to a range to shoot either for practice or competition my 1st and foremost concern is safety. My $0.02
  8. Hey guys, sorry no pics but I don't have a photobucket account to say the least I am old school. My neighbor that lives about a 1/4 mile away killed two yotes yesterday morning off of his back porch. There is a hay field that is behind his house and he shot a big male that was dark and just looked wolfy and a female that was tan and weighed 30lbs or so. He is having the male hide tanned for?? he didn't say. Anyhow now is the time as love is in the coyote air. Btw we live in Pickett county on south end of the lake.
  9. Hey guys I just heard on the T.V. after we got power back that yesterday it was 10 today 32 tomorrow rain. I know those guys are miserable. Say a little prayer for their safety. I don't know why the classic is in Feb. that is poor judgement to me. I would choose May.
  10. Well it sleeted/snowed last night.  Started raining this morning and I swear I was telling my wife we would probably lose power and it went off within 30 seconds. I later said I needed to talk about sex!! Power stayed off for about an hour, on radio they said Jamestown has about an inch of ice and Albany, Ky was without power. Ya'll be safe and stay put if you don't have to get out. Mailman came and road is a slushy, icy mess. Come on spring!!
  11. Prayer lifted for baby and family. She is a living doll!! There isn't anything like grand babies.
  12. Big K is right I think everyone at some point gets a little heads up. What would have been nice would have been to walked up to that employee and said I'll take 2 bricks also and said it loud enough for everyone to hear. I would get his name and first call the manager if he/she wasn't in the store at that time. Then a letter to corporate would be in order. But as Davetn said life isn't fair. I like Academy better than a bunch of the larger sporting goods stores and I would think their management would appreciate the information. My $0.02
  13. You have probably heard about fair weather hunter and fishermen, well new term fair weather protesters.
  14. Mike some people have No standards, I have a un-named relative that just has a grading system, he culls absolutely none. I have personally seen some really scary looking ones he had, I have been very, very, very drunk more than once, but not that drunk. Btw I am not bragging about getting drunk, in fact I don't drink anymore. Alcoholics go to AA meetings, drunks do not.
  15. I hear ya John, I drove my 4x4 Yukon to check on my Vietnam Veteran neighbor yesterday and I warned him about slipping and falling. I will have to give my mailman credit he usually drives a Buick, but just came by in a 4x4 Chevy pickup so the highway must be passable anyway. Me and momma decided before moving here that on days or weeks like this we would stay put and watch the fire in the Ashley and look out the window until we saw no white!!  Leftover chili today, maybe vegetable soup tomorrow.
  16. Well we live 1/2 way between Livingston and Jamestown. The mailman didn't come yesterday and I doubt we will see him before Saturday. Nobody has ventured out to the highway. The road/lane we live on is close to the dead end and the temperature and rain will be what clears our road. It was snowing like crazy this morning probably got 3 inches of light fluffy snow. I myself have seen all I want for about 25 years. I am ready to go fishing and no ice fishin neither. Ya'll stay safe out there, we don't need any broken hips and such!!
  17. Hey I heard someone a loooooooong time ago say you were supposed to learn at least 1 thing a day. I could learn several and still not know as much as most people. I hope everyone has a chance to get out and find some, be careful for snakes that time of year. I remember that where you would find them would be shady and would grow ferns was a good place. They are well camo'ed and are easy to walk by or on. Once you find one look real close in the area, they grow from spores and I would think they would be pretty close.
  18. These goobermint agencies evidently have all the power they need, because they are constantly changing the rules or making new ones. Until we the people set them straight and take back our government this country is going to look like the UK and Australia. The EPA bans lead, BATF bans this bullet, then this gun, then this and it never ends. The anti-gun, or control establishment is bound and determined to tell you where to go and when to go and how to go. They figured a long time ago that taking the guns would be ugly, but banning every bullet 1 at a time and eventually it is done. Kind of like eating an Elephant, 1 bite at a time.
  19. They are the ONLY mushroom that I would identify and eat myself. Google some pictures and they look absolutely like no other mushroom. There is a shroom called a fake morel, but from all the pictures I have seen they don't look close. Also if you eat 1 or 2 of these delectable morsels of food, you will start looking for them more.
  20. Will the styrofoam covers for outside faucet be enough protection for -9? Would additional insulation be wise? Been a long time since I have put a minus in front of an expected temperature that I was to be in. I thought that was reserved primarily for the folks north of the mason-dixon line. :woohoo:
  21. Thanks for the post. My wife's only remaining uncle lives in Huntsville, Al. and is a WWII vet he is 89 and gets around pretty good. I would love to take him to this museum, we lived about 100 miles from N.O. but never took the time to go see it.Thanks to all our vets, we wouldn't have this great country without them!!
  22. You are so right the roads go both north and south, east and west. I will never forget probably 20+ years ago and it had been a brutal winter in International falls and the news reporter was interviewing this fellow probably mid 70's and he said when spring comes I'm moving south. I thought is was funny that it took him that long to get enough of those cold winters. I was only kidding about the snow, I know it is a royal pain to deal with, when we live in Michigan in 67 my parents had a 65 buick convertible and my first chore every morning was to get a broom and sweep the top off as we didn't have a garage. Ya'll be safe and stay as warm as possible.
  23. I know this isn't exactly hunting, but it is too. I haven't been in a place to hunt morels since I was a kid. I have done a little web searching and seems like April-May is good times to search for these delictable morsels. If you are a morel hunter give me your tips. Thanks Mac
  24. Funny as I am sitting here I am watching, well mostly listening to a Seinfeld show on T.V. That's funny right there I don't care who you are. One of my SIL and BIL don't like Seinfeld, but find the A-team entertaining. When my wife told me this I said they are nuts!!
