My survival iPhone

Recommended Posts

Don't laugh.  Think about it.   ;)

My wife grudgingly gave me one of her old iPhones. I wiped it and put it back to factory specs.  I deleted anything it would let me delete.  Apps are crap.  There'll be no network support anyway.

My plan:

  • Acquire adequate solar charger, small and compact
  • Adapt my dynamo charger on my emergency radio
  • Upload information that I simply cannot memorize
  • Download a high quality version of solitaire

My plan is to create a compact "semi-self sustainable" information database.

I need to ONLY keep high value information as real estate on this thing is limited to about 14 gig.   I think anyone would VERY wise to do the same.   She bought me a new iPod last night.  A Gen 7 with 160 gig.  I plan to build another database on my iMac that can contain a LOT more info.  WTSHTF if  I have time I can wipe out my music [Oh sweet mercy!!!   ]  and upload to it, but i will keep this iPhone next to my BOB and have it ready already.

NOW, I need youse guys help.  What to put on there.  I already have a few military survival manuals and a small playlist of Zepplin, Sabbath, Metallica, Firewind and a few others necessary to maintain my increasingly shifty mental stability.

What else?  I have some "Guides to Country living" that I can manually type into a Notes App.  I don't mind actually hand typing the info.  As we learned in school, maximum retention is gained by repetition so by transcribing some of it, I may retain a little in this little marble rolling around in my big head.

As I said, suggestions and any holes in the plan?????

THanks again, Dolomite for the disks.  I'm STILL sifting through all that and taking what I think will be of great value.

I'm adding some exploded views of some of the most common guns.  Also, some military manuals that may come in handy but ain't smart to mention here.  You know.....

Also I think it would be cool to maybe get a thread started that would kind of stock pile all of this info in one location so we could all share this stuff. I will be doing this tonight with my spare. :pleased:

I think I will actually do it with my every day phone though. You never know when you may need some of this info and I have a 32GB model so I have plenty of room.

a little off topic, but speaking of solar chargers, have you had any experience with any of them? Ive been thinking of getting a small one like your talking about, but have no clue where to start, any suggestions? Also, good idea with the iphone. Kind of reminds me of "the book of eli" with denzel washington. he carried around his old ipod and a motorcycle battery to power it lol.

NOT off topic!  Very important.  I see some solar chargers at Academy meant for field cameras.  Nice and compact but I AIN"T giving a hundo for a charger!  There's a Hong Kong Ebay solution.  I just need to get on it.  If they're small and cheap enough, buy two.....two is one..

Well, I'd definitely suggest considering setting up a Kindle account if you haven't already and perhaps putting a large collection of fictional novels on there as well. Textual documents take up very little storage, and could provide invaluable entertainment and morale in the right situation.

Perhaps:

  • Knife Sharpening Books
  • Gunsmithing Books
  • Edible Plants/Foods Books
  • Maps (Geographical/Topographical) These would be invaluable! You would have to find an app that lets you store the date locally though. These would probably take several GB's
  • Family Photos
  • Flashlight App (One that uses LED for camera)

That's all I can think of right now. However, I do have a few more things to add. Check out Evernote if you haven't already. Also, I know money doesn't grow on trees for us normal folks, but I would personally feel really good about doing the following. Buy a new/used iPod touch in as many GB that you can, get it ready right now. Put everything you wish on to have on it for preparation. Take your solar charger, iPod case, Zagg Invisishield, and any other accessories along with your iPod touch that you wish, and make them EMP proof. I'd go overboard with it. That is, if you truly wish to be prepared. That way, it is ready (so you don't have to sync it in an emergency). Aluminium foil is supposed to work, I did have a lot of luck blocking all signals to a radio with it. Place the radio (on and turned up) in a carboard box. Wrap the box completely with aluminum foil. Once the radio stops playing, theoretically it is EMP proof. They also have these:

Without lots of money for testing and stuff, I don't know if those are just a gimmick to take advantage of some or if they actually work.

Just my thoughts

I can tell this is going to a little frustrating.  Anyone know a simple way to sync Notes on my iMac to the iPhone?  I googled it and theres a bunch of  :poop:  about iCloud and mail accounts.  Why the hell won't any of these things talk to one another without internet accounts?  In the old days you could just drag and drop stuff.  I really do hate technology.

I usually just email text documents to myself and open/save them on the iphone that way. I'm sure there is a way to sync but I can't figure it out until I get home.

Someone should be along shortly to say how the Android OS will be superior in this aspect.

I received a solar charger for iPhones for Christmas.  It is made to hang on the back of a backpack so it charges while you are hiking.  It also has a battery pack that charges up so you can have power at night or extended bad weather.  I will take a pic of it and post it this weekend.

Great idea!  Two things and these are just my $0.02

1)  Solar charger is a good idea.  In a SHTF situation you may or may not also be able to use a USB charger, possibly with your laptop.  If you might be running a generator or what not this could work.  Can't have too many options here.

2)  I would store the phone in a place where it would survive an EMP bomb or serious solar flare.

If your main concern is accessing it without a network, Evernote and Dropbox both can store things locally on the phone. If your main concern is security (or lack thereof), then I understand.

Stanza is what you need on the phone.
Calibre is what you need on your computer.

You will have to essentially import/create/author "ebooks" in Calibre and save them as a .epub format. Then you can put them on the iPod/iPhone via Stanza. With Calibre, you can setup a "server" on your computer, and then navigate to your "server" via your local WiFi network, and import books that way. I think you can do wired as well.

Easiest thing to do was open the phone to my email account.  Now I can just send myself all the info I want in emails.  As long as I go to the iPhone and open the emails, they will be there to read later without a connection.  This will be MUCh better anyway as I can cut, paste, copy whatever pictures, and text I want.  I can even do scans with my printer.

Anyone know of a way to lock the mail app so I cannot accidentally delete any emails?

I don't know how you would lock the email app but I am experimenting with ibooks and adobe reader right now to make sure it is actually saving the files permanently. It seems to be but surely there has to be some way to actually see what all is saved on the phone. I am looking into a third party "files" type app like android has.

I'm using the Solio Bolt charger, no complaints. Used it in the Philippines and Indonesia and it was great unless I was under canopy in the jungle. It was around $65.

You need to tack together a Faraday cage to store it.

Pretty straightforward to accomplish.  You could repurpose some old ammo cans in a pinch - just remember the rubber seal will invalidate the protection - you will need to remove it and bridge the gap with some foil or something.

I don't see any porn on your list.....

Seriously though, don't forget a good case. Griffin makes one called the Survivor. It;s similar to the Otterbox Defender, but Griffin is a Nashville-based company.

I hear good stuff about the Lifeproof cases, but they're pricey.
