I recently posted a thread in the TGO Trading Post requesting to purchase a single brick of .22lr since, apparently, it has disappeared. I was looking for a single brick so I could take my son shooting to break in his new Ruger SR22 and perhaps put some rounds down-range with his 10/22. What happened, you ask? I received not ONE, but TWO offers from fellow members to loan me a brick of 22 as long as I replaced it when supplies became available again. Now, I've never met either of these members in person...only here on the forum. What other group of people does stuff like that? I've been on the Internet for quite a while and participated in a number of forums. This is the only group I know of where outright generosity and kindness are so apparent. I see it in other circumstances as well. How about the threads where someone expresses a financial need for a worthy cause? TGO members step up and donate in large numbers just for the sake of helping others. This has happened over and over again since I've been a member here. In a time of great uncertainty in this country, it is great to know that there are people out there who are willing to step in and lend a hand when there's a need. Thanks TGO! :usa:10 points
May I ask who you are going to for the other side of the issue? I haven't figured out everyone I'm going to speak to yet, I'm still researching. But I'll likely reach out to Mayors Against Illegal Guns or someone like the Violence Policy Center. Perhaps local politicians, if I can find some who are vocal about the issue (either for or against). I'll also be speaking to John at TFA for balance to the policy wonks on the other side.
Brian - ill ask that you do something rarely done in your industry - and that is to not automatically grant authority to people who simply lie and mistate facts. MAIG and the VPC both are well known to misrepresent information in significant ways. Feel free to talk with them but I BEG of you to at least publish actual facts and not just make it a "two sides if the argument" type of story. Sadly much "reporting" now is simply regurgitation of taking points from partisan sources. While finding impartial sources is challenging for any topic, that is your job. What would Woodward and Bernstein looked like if they just wrote an article talking about what nixon said and why unnamed aources said and they left it at that? I applaud you for coming on here to perform research, and folks have given you quite a lot of facts to work with. I'd encourage you strongly to source some quotes from the Heller and McDonald cases. I'm sure John can help you. You would be performing the duty of the media. Please - thanks for your consideration.3 points

Another thought. If the physical aspect of ones relationship is so powerful that it can save or destroy the ties that bind the two together, I question the validity of that relationship to begin with. You could remove, permanently, any form of physical love from my marriage and it would prosper just as well and have NO influence on fidelity whatsoever. Reason being, my wife is worth more to me than the sum of her......parts. A good woman is not a life support for a vagina.3 points

I try my darnedest to be one of those guys. God knows those guys have done it for me. A fine TGO'er gifted me a like new stok set this weekend for my rifle. Wouldn't take a dime. I noticed our pay it forward thread kind of died. But did it? I know of a LOT of paying it forward that goes on around here unnoticed. I've traveled around the Internet forum scene. There ARE NO FINER PEOPLE to be found than right here. Period. Even the jerks are good people that you can trust in a pinch. Usually on any other forum you have Aholes that can't be reasoned with. I have found even those here who argue like little children and have to have daddy David step in to mediate, are very great people. This does not include the occasional troll, although no other site I ever been on has done so well with them. Our moderators all carry a +5 two handed vorpal bastard sword of troll slaying. I have two similar stories to share about the fine folks here on TGO. A few months ago I got the chance to shoot an M&P VTAC and fell head over heals for them. I made a post asking for opinions and expressed my inability to find any in stock. A few weeks later a member got ahold of me through PM to let me know he had one he was considering selling as he was scheduled for deployment and would not be able to use it. He gave me a HECK of a deal considering his was complete with several desirable upgrades. Most recently I mentioned in a post my displeasure at not having procured enough AR magazines before the pricing madness began. Within 48 hours I had not one, but two offers from different members to sell me enough to be comfortable at and below retail pricing from before the madness. I jumped on the first offer and when talking over the phone to arrange a meeting (and just shooting the breeze in general) this GENTLEMAN asked how I was set for ammo. Well having none on hand I just kind of chuckles and said not good. Long story short he agrees to sell me some out of his stash, once again for much less than retail pricing from before the madness. After talking a bit more he also offers up a 22 conversion so now I can actually shoot my AR without burning through precious center fire, once again at a great price. I'm not going to name names to protect the users privacy, but you guys know who you are and all I can say is that the kindness displayed to myself, a complete stranger, truly does touch my often times too jaded heart. Thank you all so, so much! TGO is by far, and I mean far the best forum out there to my knowledge and that all comes down to a to the notch staff, AND the incredible members here.2 points

It's difficult to discuss what we "should do" when we don't know what will get passed or if anything will get passed. Certainly, beforehand, we need to be as active as possible in opposition and that includes our personal efforts of calling and writing our elected officials (and meeting face to face with then when possible) as well as joining every pro-2A group out there with additional contributions to those groups lobbying efforts. Once something does pass...I think every person is going to have to decide for themselves what they are and are not willing to do to retain their rights; rights not given by the Constitution but by God (or if you don't believe in a god then at least rights that every person has simply by being a "person"). I think starting NOW (and we probably should have all alone); we need to be VERY CAREFUL about what information we give here about ourselves...I'm not wearing tin foil but I know enough about technology today to know what data mining can uncover and I suggest that we think carefully before committing something to writing in an internet forum.2 points

I'm sure a lot of you guys got this same letter. Just thought I'd post this response to show where she stands on our 2nd amendment. Dear Mr. ______, Thank you for contacting me regarding gun laws in light of the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut on Friday, December 14th. As a former educator and grandmother of elementary students, my heart breaks for the families of the 20 children and 6 adults whose lives were taken all too soon and my prayers remain with the community for comfort and healing in the days ahead. While I believe that this tragedy warrants a serious discussion on what can be done to prevent future school violence, I do not believe that greater government restrictions on gun ownership offer a viable solution. In the tragedy of Newtown, Connecticut, for example, the individual who carried out these heinous acts did not have a criminal background and the weapons used to carry out the massacre were legally registered to the gunman's mother, thus greater gun control laws would not have impeded his ability to carry out his actions. Instead, we must focus our attention on strengthening families and empowering parents to provide safe home environments and to recognize aggressive behaviors early on. A New York Times study found that 63 of 100 rampage killers made threats of violence before the event occurred. We must engage parents and teachers in being aware of these warning signs so that we can help stop these tragedies before they occur. Additionally, we must curb the trend of desensitization to violence, profanity and other high-risk behaviors glamorized by videogames and movies that often consume children's time, and shift to a culture that respects the sanctity and value of each innocent human life. As a nurse for more than 40 years, I believe we must be prepared for a conversation on school violence as it relates to mental health. While we still do not know the motive of the gunman in the December 14th shooting, we know that the individual was among the millions of Americans with a mental disorder, and may have benefitted from other treatment options or more frequent opportunities to speak with counselors. Examples such as this are among the many reasons I continue to advocate for patient-centered healthcare reforms that will offer those facing mental disabilities access to the care that they need. Thank you again for contacting me about this issue and please join me in continuing to pray for the families affected by the tragedy. Sincerely, Diane Black Member of Congress1 point

I was thinking more along the lines of a wrongful death suit. Let’s say that when Mr. AutoZone got out he ran and called 911 instead of going back and chasing off the armed robber. Let’s say that Mr. AutoZone said he had a gun, but he couldn’t reenter the store because he is a new father and needs his job, and that AutoZone would fire him. Let’s say the armed robber executed the Manager before he fled the office. Sure the murderer is responsible but I can’t help think that AutoZone is complicit in his death. Deadly force was justified and was available, but not used because of fear of what the store would do. I know Good Samaritan laws don’t cover getting fired; but they should.1 point

I own 2 Minis and can't imagine letting them go, even though I have gotten into ARs in the last year. I never owned pre 580 Mini, so I assume all the stuff I've heard is true. The new ones are just fine, though I admit that my ARs are somewhat more accurate, but that's a matter of finer scale. 200 yards with open sights, they both do the same thing. - OS1 point

Crazy luck , sorry to hear , but your better off with a lower right now than an upper. I think uppers will be easier to find ( I have one on backorder at the moment ) than lowers in the future.1 point

I will just point back to my own post. If she uses sex as a weapon, your relationship is doomed. If you use sex as a weapon, your relationship is doomed. If you cannot talk it out and work it out like 2 people in a lifelong commitment to a meaningful partnership, its time to hire a lawyer --- or it will be, not to long in the future. If you give in and she still does it, its still a failed relationship. If you keep it up and don't talk about it, fail. You can do what you want. But as far as advice goes, you need to sit down and work it out and if you cannot do that, there is nothing to fix and anything you do is going to lead to the same end result --- and how you get there, it does not matter.1 point

Well three months later I finally finished my latest AR and first lower assembly. I used some directions from the InterWeb but didn't dig too deep until later as specific issues came up. Many of the resources that are available (on the Web)I didn't use and just sort of stumbled through much of the assembly. Doing it over again now I could cut 75% off the assembly time. It's nice to know now the fundamentals so if I ever stumbled on an AR I could pretty much take it apart, troubleshoot it and put it back together. I purchased a full set of spare parts to supplement what I had for my first. I also bought some punches and a vice block for holding lowers in place while working on them. I went with a middle of the road trigger group, RRA National match 2 stage which is very nice. Clean crisp break. I now know what "glass rod breaking" means. Glad I purchased the two lowers when I did. I used the Mega Arms on this and everthing fit well and tight. Now it is time for some BUIS and eventually some optics this year. But not right away since the Feds has decided it will be reducing my income this year and pissing it up a rope somewhere. I did order some anti-creep/roll pins for the trigger group and an ambi safety. Well this one is finished just in time to have it made illegal and eventually confiscated.1 point

Its one thing to tell a private citizen you'd prefer them not to carry, but a cop!? Can he even do that? I know very few people who can disarm a cop. A judge can order a cop to remove his weapon in a court room and I am fairly certain a school principle has the authority as well. A Denny's manager?1 point

There's still many ways to protest and resist right now without starting a hot civil war, if some mag ban is passed and I can't find new mags to buy all I can do about that is write my reps, but if some kind of registration or turn-in bill is passed, millions of gun owners can resist by not acknowledging such an un-constitutional law. I keep reading some who seem to fear that if you resist there will be armed storm troopers breaking down your door, just how many LEO's, feds, soldiers etc. are there? Are there enough to search "MILLIONS" of households for guns? I certainly don't plan on caving in and hope no one else does because we are just too many for the government to deal with and I believe they can't completly trust all the LEO's and military personell to follow orders to attack American citizens. We may have an opportunity to put the politicians back in their place somewhat, at least show them that the people still ultimatly rule.1 point

I was amazed at the improvement to my skills after my first class at Mid South. I have been lucky enough to work in a field that my employers have pickup the tab for most of my training. My sister is a teacher locally and decided to bring up at lunch yesterday while my wife and I were out to lunch with a group of them that I supported a teacher's right to carry if they were so inclined . I was immediately confronted by one of the other teachers at the table stating that she wouldn't trust several of her coworkers with a firearm b/c they are borderline incompetent. I asked if she would mind putting those teachers names on a piece of paper for me so I could take that up with the principal of the school. She said "take WHAT up with the principal?" and before I could get a word out my wife interjected that if they were in fact "borderline incompetent" we didn't want them teaching our children OR carrying firearms in the school. While my wife rarely approves of my stance on firearms b/c she was raised to fear them, on the way home she said that she is much more scared of the idiots that have some how gotten into positions of power than she is of me or any of our friends who carry firearms.1 point

I agree...it's one thing to "know" something and another to do something about it but that doesn't mean we should freely reveal information about ourselves and make it even easier for them. I just (December) submitted my master's thesis on medical data privacy and one of the things I pointed out is that much of what we consider "private" information isn't private and has never been private and that we reveal volumes of intimate data about ourselves of our own free will without really giving any significant thought to who will or can see it or what can be done with it. ;)1 point

As you probably know, you can sue anybody/company, for anything, at anytime, but something like this will not be successful. What is the legal claim going to be based on? Discrimination? These rules are so the company can claim they are not discriminating. That's what this is all about. If Autozone gave a pass to the guy who stopped the armed robber, then the next Autozone employee who was caught with a gun in the car or on his person, even if he wasn't saving anyone's life, could claim discrimination because he's being treated differently. So the company has an absolute zero tolerance, no exceptions policy. A court, or the EEOC, is not going to care that the employee was breaking the rule for a good cause. That has nothing to do with discrimination. As long as the company's action is not discriminatory (based on the law) then you're just not going to have a cause of action. I had a lengthy discussion with Mrs. SLF, who works in HR for a big company, about the Autozone case. She totally understood their position. Said she would do the same thing. Not that she liked it, but that's how things have to be done when you're managing lots of people she explained.1 point
