How we treat our prisoners, "terrorist" or otherwise has much more to say about us than it does them - or even the questionable intelligence we may gain through the employment of "enhanced interrogation" techniques. If you believe that the rights listed in the Bill of Rights are in fact unalienable, natural or God given, then denying them to a prisoner will do more harm to you than it does them in the long run. This isn't really a new problem, either. Do some reading on WWII's Operation Pastorius to see how we struggled to deal with German sabotuers, and ended up providing them counsel. History will record for the generations the actions we take to respond to events in the present. The story we leave our grandchildren matters. While no one would wish to have to make these choices, this is as much about us as it is them.5 points

This is how I feel. This kid killed people and the Aurora shooter killed many more. Both were US citizens. If you are going to treat this kid as a terrorist you need to charge the aurora shooter, as well as dozens of other killers, as a terrorists. I think people see muslim and automatically assume they are affiliated with a terroristic organization but so far none have claimed responsibility. Al Qaeda has even denied what could have been an easy moral booster to their organization. So in the end I think this kid is a killer like any other but his face will be the face of terror until the next attack comes. If we are basing him being a terrorist on the fact he is muslim then every other muslim should be a terrorist anytime they commit a crime. Or if it is because they kill multiple people then there are a lot of terrorists out there. Or if it is because he used explosives then there are a lot of killers out that have used an explosive. I think, in the end, he is just a killer that used and explosive to kill. He is still a sick individual that should be held accountable in the same way as any other citizen who committed a similar crime. We have a much larger problems than terrorists. The "Global War on Terror" is name used to garner support for a lot of the operations we do that are questionable at best and outwright wrong at worst. Everyday we are killing innocent people in other countries in this "Global War on Terror". On top of that the rights of US citizens are being trampled on every day in the name of the "Global War on Terror". Our guns will eventually be taken away by the governement in the name of this "Global War on Terror" because the powers that be are already trying to connect the two to garner support. Our right to privacy has, and will continue to, be eroded by the government every day because of the"Global War on Terror". Almost every article in the Bill of Rights will likely be be null and void before the "Global War on Terror" is declared over, if it ever is. And the "Global War on Terror" will be the excuse given every time a right we once had is taken away. And if you think about all that has been taken away from us then you realize the terrorists are winning. Terrorist, by definition, is the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion. We have been coerced, by the terrorist and our own governemnt, to accept the loss of freedom(s) as acceptable in hopes of preventing terrorism. And in my eyes the terrorists win every time we are coerced into believing that loosing just one more freedom for the hope of security is acceptable. I believe it isn't the terrorists most Americans have to worry about but what the government does in the name of preventing terrorism. Then beyond this fear of terror we have our economy that is getting worse every day and that is what really worries me. I believe all the terrorist attacks combined will pale in comparison to the death toll if our economy collpased, even if only for a few months. But a collapse is what is needed to reset everything. When you consider how many actually depend on their benefit then you will see how bad it will be when those benefits stop. And in the wake of any type of collapse there will be even more freedoms taken away.4 points

and then if the bombers weren't caught and went on to blow something else up, then people would be screaming why didn't the cops go door to door?4 points

That is not necessarily the case. Pointing out the faults of Reagan has nothing to do with the future sucess of Republican candidates. The last two Republican candidates lost because they were weak moderate candidates, nothing more. If Republicans keep fielding weak candidates then yes, they will continue to lose.4 points

"In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem. From time to time we've been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. Well, if no one among us is capable of governing himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else?" - Ronald Reagan's First Inaugural Address (1981) Sometimes I can't help but think to myself that "people" are just too dumb or too uneducated or too self-absorbed to be able to "handle" the burden of governing themselves and I fall into the trap of believing that "someone" needs to step in and do if for those people. Ronald Reagan knew better...I think he had a true and abiding faith in America and it its people...that THEY, even if they weren't perfect, would always be better at governing themselves than any government, not matter how well intentioned, could ever be. I miss Ronald Reagan and I miss how he made us feel about America.3 points

I don't want undo oversight into this, but we can't complain that the mental health system is broke and then complain when they want to improve the reporting of the mental health information to the NICS system. The issue for me isn't the reporting (I actually agree that this should be mandatory), but rather what qualifies a person to be on that list and who can determine that. There needs to be some solid standards on that, but it can't be a case where someone crazy doesn't think they should be on the list because they think 'I am not crazy" by their thoughts. Do we want to make it where only those who are found by a court to be crazy are on that list. Our court system is so efficient, I see that working well (not), plus now I have to pay more for something that I don't think would help a lot. There has to be some reasonable middle ground. Don't get me wrong, going to a psychologist or psychiatrist should be encouraged if needed and that shouldn't be the only reason needed to put you on list. HIPPA is there to protect people, but we can't use that as an excuse to not to give any info that would keep people who really shouldn't own guns from getting them. Will it keep some from seeking help, probably, but it isn't a perfect world.3 points

Elections have consequences. If the "children" in the socialist utopia of MA and Boston like the high handed, jack-booted thing; i say; let 'em keep on likin it.. I could care less what they do up in the "Sour Lands" and you can bet they dont care what is goin on down here where we delightful rustics reside. Dont worry about them; let em reap the harvest up there; and work hard down here to keep it from happening in your neighborhood. As the great Tip Oneil (...a real MA yankee...) used to say: "...all politics is local...". non-caring leroy3 points

The deification of RR annoys the crap out of me. He wasn't a very good president, he was just less terrible than the ones that followed and a few of the ones prior. We haven't had anything resembling a good president who respected and followed the constitution in deed as well as words since Calvin Coolidge.2 points

Really? Were you there? Did you forget that strong "patient's rights" movement of the 60's, 70's and 80's and lawsuits by the ACLU and other groups? Many groups, including the mental health care industry wanted the states and the federal government out of the mental health care industry (not to mention that the cuts in funding and other legislation passed while Reagan was governor and President was done under Democratic controlled legislatures). To put it more plainly, the people who were truly responsible for the release of thousands of mentally ill from institutions and changed (for the worse I think) the way we approach mental health today were on the totally opposite end of the political spectrum from Reagan. Maybe we should have elected the Peanut Farmer to a second term. ;)2 points

Strange how folks who do recall Reagan are so enamored with his legacy. I'm sure they've examined all his writings, speeches, etc with their own critical thinking skills instead of just remembering the flash and pizaz of a skilled politician 'good ole boy' that seemed like a savior at the time.1 point

for a pistol with a long trigger pull, I see no danger. I have never understood how anyone can pull a 10 pound ish trigger a full inch or more "by accident". Try it on an unloaded gun of this type .... you cant do it. you can lift the firearm by its trigger, no bang. The gun has to be immobile or it will move (entire gun) under the force. Once it is immobile (not easily done even in a pocket), you have to stick something in the trigger guard at a precise angle and apply a ton of force (angle is difficult to get in a pocket). How could one not notice this happening??? Its not dangerous. Yes, someone could probably find a way to fire the gun by "accident" anyway -- but you can do that even if the gun is sealed in a steel box, given the self destructive nature of some people.1 point

While I don't for a moment trust Obummer or Sebelius we do, I believe, need to find a way to identify those individuals who, because of their mental health status, should not be allowed to possess a firearm. I don't know what the best way to do that is but I think it's pretty apparent that the system we have now isn't working very well. Unfortunately, I don't know if there is a way to do it without trampling on the rights of both the mentally disturbed as well as others.1 point

Recon? Drunk Redneck, teen dare, or a real threat? Who would travel up river in a boat in the middle of the night, tie up a boat, and walk the grounds of a TVA Nuclear Reactor facility with a gun, confront a security officer, shoot, and then escape. Hmmmm.1 point

there is no valid reason for restricting the sale of any legal product. Anything legal should be available 24-7. but of course our state legislature knows what is best for us.1 point

There should be something done about the guy pointing rifles at windows. I'd be beyond pissed, and probably have a thread about me, if that was my daughter looking out the window and having it pointed at her. If your clam is so large you have to ride with your gun raised towards civililians, you should have stayed on your Xbox and kept playing Black Ops 2.1 point

One thing I will throw out there is that the idea of the Bill of Rights was based on the idea that human beings all possessed inalienable natural rights, not rights granted to citizens by a government. In other words, it doesn't matter whether the bad guy is a natural born citizen, a naturalized citizen, or foreign citizen. The Bill of Rights is a statement of philosophical beliefs embodied into law. Following the Boston Massacre, John Adams insisted the British soldiers accused of firing on Boston residents should be given due process including a fair trial.1 point

If they want to ask me about my house fine. I can help them speed up the search by not needlessly spending time in my house. Keep in mind all those searches did not turn up the suspect. An aware citizen that was finally allowed to go outside their house found him.1 point

I can't even read this thread anymore. It is like deja vu all over again. So I will just post my 2 cents and move on, LOL. I figure if someone is riding my ass and driving aggressive they must have a good reason to do it. Maybe their house is on fire, or their mother just had a stroke or something. I give the benefit of the doubt and get the heck out of the way. Just let them go on. Slowing down to the point people get pissed off has no real purpose. Just seems like a dick measuring contest or something. Carry on.1 point

Since we are on peeves... Semi Drivers. Here I am kicking it down I40 at a respectable 78ish MPH, making good time and staying out of people's way who want to do 85. It never fails, two semi's in the right lane. The rear semi waits until I am within ten seconds of passing and they move on over to pass the semi in front of them. Now, they don't pass with any urgency, no, the guy passing is doing 66 and the guy being passed is doing 65. Why can't you do one of two things: speed up...or WAIT UNTIL I PASS! I mean, I will only be there for five seconds. No, we have to spend five freakin' minutes doing below the speed limit because you are an A'hole and can't wait five seconds. I travel a lot, and on a typical drive to Memphis and back, this happens a dozen times. Grrr!1 point

Another option for your situation might be one of the smart phone scope adapters that allow you to use your phone as a view screen for your rifle's scope. This may allow you to still fire it from a much more comfortable position.1 point
