Walking Dead spinoff planned for 2015

I am really not sure that this is a good idea.  As much as I enjoy watching the show - and as much as I can see that there is a lot of material left unexplored in an entire world that has gone down the tubes, I am concerned that two shows will water down the concept and weaken the original.  I have suggested, in other threads, that it might work to take portions of seasons to explore individual characters on the show and how they ended up where they are, now but a whole, new show with entirely different characters?  I just don't know.

Well, they may feel the need something else in the works ... it's only a matter of time before Lincoln and/or Reedus want to move on. Rather doubt the series could survive without both of them, especially Daryl. Reedus probably most likely to leave, since he was already more in demand on the big screen than Lincoln.

I'm not so sure it won't work. It did for CSI. Went from Vegas, to Miami and NYC. I'd sure watch them. I hate waiting a week in between TWD episodes!!

Or months between seasons that had 6 shows.

The soaps produce a few hours of television everyday, why can't some network do the same with a TWD type show? Edited by Dolomite_supafly

As much as I hate the idea of spinnoffs, I think I'd probably watch just about any zombie show that they put out - just because my wife so avidly adores the genre.  Yeah, the wife... that's it.

A daily zombie soap would be absolutely amazing.

I didn't get much from this article. Is it just a new series with different characters?

That is my understanding.  Kirkman was quoted as saying something like he is excited to have the chance to work on a new show that is entirely unfettered by the comics.

There have been several extremely successful spinoff shows.

The CSI spinoffs as previously mentioned worked fine.

NCIS has been running since 03 (Spinoff from JAG) then there's NCIS LA

Frasier (spinoff from cheers)

For the oldies out there Adam 12 (Spinoff of dragnet)

Saved by the bell and its own spinoffs (spinoff of Good morning Ms Bliss)

Another oldy for you  Happy days spawned a couple of good spinoffs Levergne and sherly as well as  mork and mindy

I think there is room in the market for a walking dead spinoff and it could be an extremely good show.   I like that it wont be constrained by the comic and may allow for a lot more character development.  Maybe we will finally get to see the start of the outbreak.

I would love to see some episodes that revolve around the beginning of the outbreak. It could be different characters every time, with none of the series cast. Or it could involve the series cast, but before they all got together. It would be a great way to fill in between the short seasons, and let them step outside the comic.

Don't forget "Joey" spinoff from Friends!

Yeah, not to mention that other Happy Days spinoff "Joanie Loves Chachi" that lasted all of two (abbreviated) seasons before it was cancelled. :)

Then there was the classic spinoff of one of the most successful television shows of all time, the "MASH" spinoff, "AfterMASH".  That one didn't even last two seasons, despite the popularity of the original show (and how badly many hated to see it end.)  Don't forget that, like The Walking Dead, MASH held some ratings records of its own.

There was a successful MASH spinoff, of course - Trapper John, MD but I am not sure that was a MASH series spinoff so much as a MASH feature film spinoff.

Of course, many of the 9,200,756,251 spinoffs of Law And Order that have come into being in the last, few years have been 'successful' but not even all of them have made it.

Don't get me wrong, I hope the spinoff is great and only broadens the appeal.  My fear, though, is that the zombie 'craze' has gone so main-stream (for example, there is a cellphone commercial featuring a zombie asking if he would qualify for an 'unlimited for life' plan despite not, technically, being alive) that the fad will burn itself out, soon - as in before this spinoff begins - as far as the general public is concerned.  I would just hate to see a spinoff water down interest in the original so much that neither of them 'make it'.

They could do a daytime zombie soap. Heck when I was a kid we would haul azz home from school so as not to miss Dark Shadows. Barnabas Collins wasn't a zombie but he wasn't living either.

I don't know... think of the general quality (acting, writing, directing, etc.) of the typical soap. No, I'll pass on a daily zombie soap.

But I would appreciate it if they actually had full seasons instead of going in 6-show bursts followed by 6 months of waiting.

I have to 'fess that Walking Dead is starting to drift into "watching for duty, not fun" territory. A spin-off might work but it would be constrained by some of the odd things that come into play in the original (a handful of survivors yet all the stores and houses have no supplies. Daryl the only one with a crossbow and other stuff). And why are all the cars so shiny?
