Lumbersexual - the new Metrosexual

personally I think the whole beard thing started when members of the military started growing beards to assimilate into Afghan culture while they served there.

Every grown male member of my family on both sides has a beard and has had one for as long as I can find pictures for (60's and earlier). I wear a beard because I prefer the look and I'm to lazy to shave. I dont wear it to look tough, or give myself a manly apperance. So I think it depends what cultures you come from. The east tn mountain culture has worn beard for years, while alot of white collar guys were clean shaven for most of the last century. Most blue collar guys have facial hair of some type. You just see it in the media as it become more socially acceptable. As far as thinking I'm better than a hipster? Naw, I think I'm me. I just don't really like people who wear or act a certain way just to get recognition as being something they arent. I view 400 lb super tactical mall ninjas and wanna be bikers wearing Sons of Anarchy gear while riding the same way. They are playing weekend dress up.

the we are "better than them" around here attitude cracks me up.

I deal with "hipsters" every day at work, 99% of the ones I deal with are truly nice people to me, work and are productive, and aren't afraid of buying good product.

So they wear skinny jeans, flannel or other nice looking clothes? Their hair is generally well kept and some have beards.

Does everyone here look down on everyone else?

It is no wonder the "gun crowd" is generally looked at as nut bags.

As a general rule, folks who adopt a certain fashion as a way to fit into a trendy group are lame as hell to me. This isn't just hipsters. Hipsters are just as lame as the idiots who toss on a cowboy hat and boots and talk about how much more country they are than you. Trace Adkin types.

It's a little irritating when "trendy" folks hijack something that was more or less meaningless, and make it mean something else to the general population. Folks, like myself, who don't want to be associated with douchebags are suddenly identified to be part of a trendy movement. Like I said, it's just a little irritating.

No big deal.  I wear a beard for several reasons.  My day to day workwear is Carhart's in the winter and jeans and tees in the summer.  On paper I might sound like a lumbersexual, but then you get looking and see that my Carhart's are faded and stained.  My jeans have holes and are stained.  My beard is unkempt 75% of the time.  And my boots have mud on them. If there is still any doubt just get close enough for a whiff.  Unless the lumbersexuals have started dousing themselves in hydraulic fluid, grease, dirt, and diesel fumes it will quickly be obvious that one of them I am not.

Heh, well I was shaving it off anyway. Gonna reunite with the wife in a couple days and she doesn't dig the face mane.

I think my wife lives in a perpetual state of discontent due to my facial hair. I compromise and agree to not wear it like this

My grandfather, father, and both stepfathers wore beards. I have worn one for the last 20 years.

My entire family is thrown into a state of flux when I shave it off once a year.

As for what other fashions folks want to follow, good on them. Diversity is what makes the world a more interesting place. I wouldn't want to stifle that no matter how silly someone is being, it is called freedom.
