Picatinny Rail too long.....hacksaw?

Recommended Posts

Evening,

So I've got a one piece Weaver rail that I need to cut so that the scope objective bell will fit with the rings on the base.  Host is a Remington 700 short action.

I don't want to get taller rings as that will mess with my cheek weld.  So, I need to cut the rail.

Has anyone ever done this?  My guess would be a hacksaw and the hand file to smooth.  Finish with aluminum black or a paint pen.

Am I on the right track?

Soooo, why not adjust the optic inside the rings to a more forward position or does this screw with your eye relief too much? I guess I'm just having trouble wrapping my head around this one...

That sounds too easy.  I vote for this.

(just joking by the way)

Actually, your not wrong. I dremmel may be able to just remove enough material to accommodate the scope with possibly not having to cut the rail off. How much clearance do you need, and do you have pics?

I think I'd make a cleaner cut with a Dremel cut-off wheel than I would a hacksaw, but that's just me. That's prolly a moot point, since I'd be filing, sanding, and painting anyway.

Agreed. I got a Dremel as teenager and if anything I did during those years counts for anything today, I can wield a cutoff wheel with authoritay. ;)

I'm having hard time picturing the problem though, is the actual scope itself that's hitting the rail, or the lens cover or what? Second, is the rail got some kind of unique mounting scheme or hole pattern? Short sections of weaver rail are cheap, in fact I have more than I need if it could work for you. Any chance of some pics of the issue?

Here at long last is a picture. I think it will actually be fine, just a small clearance.

So is that just a real long generic base that is not made to fit a 700SA? Seems like your front ring and scope is pretty far back, but can't tell without seeing it all.
