Let's agree on a finish already!

Recommended Posts

Why can't manufacturers of [mostly metal] AR parts agree on a single finish so those of us with OCD don't have to worry about building an AR with multiple shades of black?

biggrin.gif I wondered the same thing... If I build out of parts how will I match finish? I don’t believe in painting guns and who wants to build a new gun and then pay to have everything refinished?

Surface prep before finishing has a lot to do with how it looks when done. Even parts finished identically in the same plant can vary.

How worn out the blast media, or tumbling media has a huge effect. How long the anodizing chemicals are run, when additives are used to replenish them. It's a total bear to get this stuff to match well in one factory, let alone get multiple factories to match.

ceracote, duracote and PVD have the best consistancy.

I like the PVD on my SIG more than I thought I would.

My solution... If I'm not happy with the color match, then I guess I'll just have to buy another stripped lower until I get a good match.

I've actually learned this from my wife. If her shoes are not the right shade, then what's a girl to do? Likewise, if my lower/upper are not the right shade of black, then I gotta do what I gotta do ;)

She has her own AR, so don't tell her I said that :nervous:

Either I've been super lucky, or need my eyes checked. I'd wager I've put together maybe 30 something AR's and never noticed a big variation in receivers. I've seen rails that were off, but not so much receivers
