Apparently, one isn't supposed to fire shotshells from the .38 Special version of the Cobra derringers. I had thought about purchasing one of them just to play around with and use mostly for shot shells and that fact (as per the company website) is a big reason I didn't. Strangely, the 9mm version is okay for use with shotshells (again, per their website.) I have fired shotshells (of the proper, respective calibers) from my S&W 642, Heritage Rough Rider, H&R 9 shot .22LR revolver and my NAA mini revolver with no problems. In fact, I have a sort of odd story about them. The story is a bit long (and, I hope, not a complete hi-jack of the thread) but I believe it is worth reading: Last year, I discovered that at some point a snake had taken up residence in my commode. No, I am not joking - the darned thing was living in my toilet. See, my old crapper had, well, crapped out (developed a crack/leak) and it had been replaced by one that was already on hand and that had been stored in an out building. The replacement had taken place during cold weather so my best guess is that the snake was already hidden somewhere inside it, hibernating. It must have woken up when it found itself in warmer environs. However it got there, I'd raise the lid to use the bathroom and the stupid thing would be hanging down from somewhere under the rim of the bowl - just its head and three or four inches of its body - and it would quickly pull itself back up into its hiding place. As you might imagine, dropping a deuce while knowing there is a snake with quick, easy access to your tender bits is disconcerting, to say the least. The snake had to go (and I mean leave, not, well, you know.) I first tried getting rid of it without harming it. The problem was, while I was pretty sure it wasn't venomous, I still didn't want to get snake bit. I have heard of people getting really sick from non-venomous snake bites because even non-venomous snakes can have some pretty bad bacteria in their mouths and I figured that went double for one that lived in a freakin' toilet. Being that I wouldn't exactly be able to choose where I grabbed the thing, I figured that getting bitten was a good possibility - and that was not something I wanted to explain at the ER. In the beginning, I wanted to try and humanely catch the snake and then release it into the wild. I started out trying to grab it with a pair of channel locks (in the interest of that whole not getting bitten thing) but it seems that a snake can pull itself back into its hidey hole faster than I can do that. I then donned a thick, leather glove and figured I would just 'man up' and snatch it out of there. Nope - the snake was still too fast. At this point, I decided to discard the 'humanely' from my plan to humanely remove the snake. I bought one of those frog-gigging heads that looks like a pitchfork that a tiny Satan might use on the Lilliputian souls in hell and attached it to the end of a short pole. I then went into the bathroom strode bravely onto the battlefield with my frog gig trusty spear in hand. I imagine I must have looked like a latter-day King Leonidas, bravely facing my foe with only the strength of spear and sinew standing between me and certain death or serious injury annoying discomfort. I quickly raised the lid and struck at my foe. To my credit, I landed a solid blow to the beast's serpentine body. To the discredit of Eagle Claw brand frog gigs, rather than penetrating the Wyrm's armored hide, the damn tines just bent (then broke off when I attempted to bend them back where they belonged.) I was almost certain I heard the fiendish snake chuckle as it retreated once again into the recesses of my crapper its lair. Snake 3, Person 0. Now, as they say, it was on. At this point, anger and frustration began to overwhelm caution, reason and good sense. I decided that, as Sam Colt had made all men equal, a descendent of his creation would probably help level the playing field between me and the no-legged bastich that had the audacity to occupy my throne. Yep, I decided to shoot the SOB. Now, I am not a particularly stupid person. I have a couple of college degrees to attest to my relative level of intelligence. Remember I said that my old toilet had just been replaced and that was what had lead to this unfortunate series of events in the first place? Well, luckily the old toilet was still around. Rather than risking destruction of the snake-infested bowl, I decided to test out the snake shot on the inside of the old one. The test went off without a hitch - using the .22LR shot in the aforementioned H&R revolver, the shot did no damage to the inside of the test bowl so now it was time to put the theory into action. I waited until I was sure ol' legless would be hanging down from the rim of my bowl like an anaconda hanging from a jungle tree, flipped the bowl open, quickly acquired my target and fired. Success! Quick as the serpent was, my trigger finger was quicker - nor was the scaly monstrosity faster than a speeding bullet load of shot. Still alive but mortally wounded, the entirety of the creatures body slipped rather unceremoniously from the recesses of my John Ferguson. I cried out in triumph ("Hell, yeah! Take that, you little bast*rd,") and, finally, removed it from the bowl. It was then that I could finally tell, for sure, that it was probably a rat snake (or maybe some variation of chicken snake.) As the flood of adrenalin and the heady rush of battle subsided, I actually began feeling a bit sorry for my valiant foe. Not that I wanted it back in my toilet or regretted going to whatever means necessary to get it out but I did find myself wishing that we could have come to a more peaceful accord. Alas, however, that was not meant to be.6 points

Haha they're ammo prices are dumb. If anything they're playing into the whole jacking the prices up scheme. $70 for 555rds of .22lr. I will say that some of the glocks were reasonably priced and they had a ton of ar and ak mags.3 points

You know...if you are living your life in such a way that your family feels it needs to take your social networking accounts down to protect your reputation; it's probably a good indicator that you really need to reevaluate how you are living your life.3 points

The problem is.....you just don't know. Someone might start a fight, you don't know if he's going to let up after he nails you. A friend and I were pulled out of a car by a gang from below the border years ago. At least a dozen of them formed a circle and began punching me till I went down. Then they took turns kicking me in the head till I stopped moving. My friend was pulled out in the middle of the street and was beaten with chains. They obviously didn't kill either one of us but I did receive a fractured skull..... My friend received broken ribs and more. We weren't cruising for a bruising, just stopped at a stoplight. We were apparently lucky because this same gang literally kicked the brains out a customer on the front step of a pizza parlor a week later. You just don't know what an attackers intent is. Back then I never considered being armed but since then I don't go out without protection. If I get attacked the weapon will come out and the perp can decide if it's worth it. As much as some folks like to live in denial there are some pretty rotten nasty people out there who have absolutely no conscience.3 points

Naw. The Skittles had nothing to do with it, except to whip the libtards and race baiters into a frenzy. The media loved bending this story so they could attack the carry and "stand your ground" laws. Need to ban thugs. Zimmerman banned one thug, and now he's an asshole in some folks' minds.3 points

I'd get a second opinion before any surgery. Part of being old also comes with the "don't get over surgery quick" clause. I know what you mean though. About a year ago sometime informed me I was balding... I had no idea.... then immediately I noticed my rotator cuff is hurting, my knee pops and I now have a hiatal hernia!!! Better get that 401k rolling......jeez.2 points

I'll admit, I'm addicted. I met Phil back years ago when all anyone knew him by was "Duck Commander", back when they still had the actual hunting show. I guess if I could describe the feeling that I got while talking to him for a couple of minutes I would say "still waters run deep". Don't let their silliness throw you, they're all very intelligent (Si excluded lol) and extremely rooted in their faith in God. I have a ton of respect for not only their attitudes and as outdoorsmen, but for their willingness to speak and spread the word of God. I maintain that if the world had more Duck Dynasty and less MTV we'd be just a little better off.2 points

Of course he could have been. I've had that Watermelon Tea...it's freakin' delicious. If somebody caught me drinking some and muching on a bag of Skittles, it'd be a far fetched assumption that I was gonna make a drug cocktail with it. If I had a history of drug abuse, listened to rap music, had gold teeth, wore a hoodie, got caught at school with burglary tools and stolen loot, and acted like a thug on FB and you questioned my purchase of Watermelon tea and Skittles, you'd either be profiling or racist, right?2 points

I am not saying this is not happening it is. What I am saying is it will do no good to fuss about it. You have ammo or you don't if you dont have the extra money to buy higher priced ammo spend the time and effort to find the stuff at lower prices it can be done I found a good bit this weekend. If you can't do either one then don't shoot. But what is the use to get on here and make a fuss about it. Things may get better again I think they will. But something else can happen and they could get a lot worse. There are folks buying ammo up and making a profit on it for sure that is life if you want it cheaper go and beat them to it. Folks just want stuff given to them any more think the world owes them something. Cheaper ammo can be had just have to be willing to put in the work and effort and time to find it. If you don't have the time then you are going to have to pay more. Not much else to say about it. Jason2 points

In my younger and dumber days ... I hit five junebugs in rapid succession going a little over 70 mph wearing a tshirt. The last one hit me on the left nipple ... It hurt so bad I pissed in my pants. I now have very high quality gear ... Even that did not stop me from getting a fractured scapula last fall. It is not if you crash ... it is when you crash.2 points

20 years ago I would be in the same frame of mind. Now, I'm 60 years old, severe arthritis in left wrist from breaking it 20 years ago, worn out knee that should have been replaced 3 years ago and has seen several surgeries, a pinned ankle and an anchor in my shoulder. I also have 3 degenerated discs......My fighting days are over. I will not be a punching or kicking bag for no man. I try to be cordial to everyone because its the right thing to do, and not out of fear. I will walk away if I can because I cannot run. Pursue at your own risk.2 points

Went over to a friend of my mothers house today to help her out with some home maintenance that was overdue. While talking to her she mentioned that she had a .22 rifle she wanted to show me. I was expecting a plinker .22. She brought out a beautiful German made falling block target rifle. Detachable diopter rear sight, front palm rest, gorgeous checkering, and a trigger that can only weigh ounces. She ended up giving it to me as she hasn't shot it in almost twenty years. It is an incredibly well made rifle and an unbelievable gift. She said her father brought it back from Germany after WW2. From what I can tell from an Internet search it was made in the 1920s. Well the camera man sure as hell can't stay in his lane. I have been running the Tail of the Dragon and Robbinsville Road (Cherohala Skyway) since back in the early 90's. In that time they have become renowned the world over. Bringing with them some of the stupidest machine operators, regardless of wheels, I have ever seen. I have been hosting a rally up there for over ten years, and I have absolutely zero tolerance for anyone that goes up there without the proper level of respect. In short, that road can and will kill you. It is not forgiving. It will eat you up and spit out the remains and never flinch. I have seen way to many stupid folks go out there and think they have something to prove and not come back.1 point

Frankly, I don't think "intellect" gets used very much (sorry if that offends anyone) when it comes to homosexuals. How does allowing "gay" boys into scouting (remembering that the prohibition against gay boys is fairly recent) encourage "gay sex"? If allowing homosexual boys in scouting is equivalent to condoning gay sex does allowing heterosexual boys in scouting condone heterosexual sex? If anyone in scouts is engaging in sex then they need to be disciplined; not because it might be "gay sex" but because it's SEX1 point

Yes, and??? As if teenage boys and girls haven't been doing this for centuries. As if gay teens in the BSA haven't been doing this anyhow. Is clandestine gay sex between boys who have to keep their sexual orientation quiet is somehow morally superior to clandestine gay sex between boys who don't have to keep their sexual orientation a secret? Frankly the logic that banning openly gay teens from joining the BSA will prevent gay sex is as sound as the idea that banning guns will prevent gun crime.1 point

I confused as to what the “Watch Captain†or “On Duty†has to do with anything? Does being a neighborhood watch member have some special privileges in Florida? Is being a “Watch Captain†something special? If Zimmerman was an off duty cop the first question would be “Did he identify himself as a Police Officer?†The second question would be “Did he have authority to act?†So… How did Zimmerman convey to Martin that he was someone special and Martin didn’t need to be afraid? And does a “Watch Captain†have authority? Is there such a thing as a “Watch captain†being on or off duty?1 point

Remember the little limeric: "....Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me...". Name callin dont hurt me; ive been guilty of it myself. The problem will begin when any tough guy moves forward to lay hand on me or those in my care. Summary: ---- Name callin; OK if it makes ya feel better. Ive probably been all them things before anyway. ---- Slappin whoopin, cutting, stomping aint ok. Any move that looks like a potential tough guy is gonna do any of them things could lead to me believin that my life (...or the lives of others...) is in danger; and appropriate defensive action could ensue very quickly. I'm a 66 year old geezer. I aint gonna fight nobody. As a dear friend and mentor of mine told me many years ago: "....Im an old guy, most any young punk can whoop me, they just aint goin to...". He carried a nickel plated j frame smith in his right front pocket every day and he knew how to use it. I see things pretty much the same way. leroy1 point

Yep. Huge waste of taxpayer money. Murderers, child molsters, meth dealers? Nah, lets go after the hunter who got the wrong license... :shake: I don't know about Kansas, but it sure would be nice if the licenses and regulations were simple, clear, and easy to understand. Just yesterday I spent 10 minutes waiting in line while the clerk tried to explain to a guy that having a fishing license and a trout stamp wasn't enough. If he wanted to fish for trout in Tellico, he also had to have a Tellico trout stamp, and it's a one-day stamp only. I'll grant you that's not exactly rocket science, but it sure could be a lot simpler.1 point

Yes...that's right...dropping your "investigation" is EXACTLY what you are supposed to do because without reasonable suspicion of a crime you shouldn't be investigating; that's per Ohio law and Ohio State Supreme Court decisions. Of course, if you don't give a rip about the law and just want to be, as you called the police in this case, asshats then you ignore the law and just do as you please...that's why lawsuits get filed and that's why THIS lawsuit got filed. Do you believe that you have the right to stop any car you want just to "make sure" the driver has a DL? I certainly hope you don't because you don't! A MWAG in these circumstances in Ohio is NO DIFFERENT than seeing someone drive a car down the street; without reasonable suspicion you don't have the right to stop the person's car and "investigate" just to see if the person has a license. You don't nor do you have any business inquiring...the Ohio Revised Code, and the Ohio State Supreme Court and Federal Appeals Court says it's none of a LEO's business.1 point
-
The police went WAY to far here...most here can see that and agree; including some former LEOs; the fact that you don't seem to understand that is the troubling part I was referring to. Demanding a person ID himself when he had absolutely ZERO obligation to do so then threatening to charge him with totally bogus charges and then actually charging him with a totally bogus charge is EXACTLY the kind of heavy-handed, unconstitutional acts that case people here to have negative feelings toward police. We have a constitution for a reason, one of which is to protect citizens from actions like the ones that came from these police officers. A lot of people here have served in the uniform of our country, including me (I actually still do so in a minor way); a lot of people here have worked for FD/EMT, including me (except I always did so as a volunteer)...however, that service doesn't give me or you or anyone else the right to violate a citizen's fundamental rights just because a person is now wearing a LEO's badge. I do my job well....and I get paid well for it but my job doesn't give me the awesome power to totally screw with a person's life by threatening him with bogus charges, jail time and possible legal fees to defend himself against such charges nor can I detain someone just because he "might" have done something wrong...those with that power have a HUGE responsibility to act within the law they are sworn to protect. The only proper thing that happened here is that the matter will be settled in court which is as it should be and I think these officers and the city they work for are going to find out just how WRONG they were. The sad part of this is that the need to go to court was totally avoidable had these officers followed the rules.1 point
