I agree with a portion of this thread and am ashamed by a different portion of this thread.   The most shocking thing for me though was discovering that my wife and I's marriage is of no account, as we weren't married in a Church. The horror of finding out that our marriage is a sham and should in fact be called a Civil Union is something that I am not sure how to face. I am worried I have to wake her right now to discuss this...       Comparing homosexuality to pedophilia? Really? Are we twelve?   My brother is gay. I don't much care for him. My brother is a lazy good for nothing bastard that prefers to sit around and do drugs and bitch than to get up off of his ass and try to do something about his poor situation in the world.   Do I hate him because he likes to put his penis in other men's butts?   No. I hate him because he is a worthless drain on society.       I have a close friend who is gay. He spent his whole life in shame and hiding, battling a severe alcohol addiction stemming from the shame. He came from a good home, was never molested, had two parents who loved him. He is like me. He is honest, a damn hard worker and one of the finest friends ANYONE could have. I think he has every right to be as happy, or as miserable as me and my wife, I mean Civil Partner.       Marriages existed before Christianity. The religion argument is null.   I am a Mormon that sells Dr. Pepper. That is a pretty big sin of it's own right there in my group. The hell with the smoking or premarital sex.   However, I think that every man, woman and child in this great country of ours is entitled to the EXACT same rights.

  No, they don't.  They are not allowed to take part in the legal institution of marriage that provides a wide variety of legal privileges and benefits.  These are being denied to a specific segment of our population simply because their lifestyle doesn't fit the worldview of a political majority in this country.  As long as benefits are being made available to married couples, something that I think should end, then same-sex couples should be allowed to legally marry and live their lives together just as I am allowed to do as a heterosexual.   And before anyone asks, I also think that polygamous folks should be able to marry as well as long as all involved are consenting adults and are aware of the multi-partner relationship.  It's none of my concern whether some guy wants to marry one woman, one man, or a group. As far as the Christianity argument goes, it seems as if most Christians in this part of the country would be more than happy to establish a Christian state much like the Muslim nations in the Middle East.  Folks around these parts claim to support personal freedom, but do so only as long as everyone submits to the same interpretation of the Bible as they do.  The mention of homosexuality as an "abomination" is in the same part of the Bible that also says eating shellfish is an "abomination" and encourages stoning of women who don't submit to their husbands.  Homosexuality isn't mentioned anywhere in the New Testament, which is actually the true foundation of the Christian faith.  Why religious zealots in this country have decided to camp out on the issue of homosexuality is something I'll never understand.

Around 3am today I woke up to see my wife standing on my side of the bed, in the dark, leaning over and whispering to me.  My first thought was to reach for my pistol on the night stand by the bed.  I did this, but my gun wasn't there. In the next couple of seconds many, many thoughts ran through my head;  was someone trying to get in the house, was someone already in the house, where's my gun etc. I remembered that I had shot and cleaned my bedside gun yesterday but while reassembling it I had received a phone call and must have left it by my recliner which is at the other end of the house.  I jumped out of the bed and ran into the closet to get my 870.  As I came back into the bedroom my wife said "Do you really think you need that shotgun?"  I said "Maybe, why?"  She said "I was just trying to tell you that I think that there's a mouse in our mattress!" :eek:  My heart rate had to have gone from about 70 to somewhere above 300 and was now starting to go slowly back down.  Anyway, the mouse wasn't in the mattress but was in the attic.  I got it with a Daisy M853 today.  Learned a few things and among them were;  Make sure your home defense weapon is where it's supposed to be - always - and find out what your wife is telling you before you try to get engaged.  I'm sure there are many more lessons learned in there but I don't think I'll be able to process them until my heart rate gets back below 100. First time in many years that I haven't had some kind of weapon within arm's reach. I just had to tell somebody about this without having to look them in the eye. :stunned:

The Bible is also "pretty clear" on all sorts of behaviors that their parishioners partake in, yet you don't suggest that their denomination is not legitimate.  This is the point of my comparison that you took offense to.  I am an Episcopalian who attends church with gay and lesbian couples and know of one member of the church staff that is gay.  I was raised a Southern Baptist, spent quite a bit of time in a Christian Missionary Alliance church and a Lutheran church, attended a small rural non-denominational Christian church for a while, went to a Nazarene church a couple of times, and explored the Catholic church.   I find my current Episcopal church to be one of the most genuine and Christian-like out of all of the churches I have attended in my life.   Many Biblical scholars would point out that your interpretation of what the Bible does say about homosexuality is inaccurate.  Here is one such scholar who spoke at my church several months ago.  Dr. Rev. Pretty much all of the opinions above can be applied to just about every single thing the government does. They measure their success by the number of new laws/regulations/bills they sponsor, pass, or help in passing. Once the laws are passed they no longer care if they are effective, which is why it is so damn hard to repeal anything in this country.

With 2 1/2 million miles behind me (and hopefully more to come once I heal up!), my personal opinion is that it will affect different types of drivers (local, regional, long-haul, live-load, drop & hook, flatbed, reefer, dry van, tanker, over-dimension, etc...) in different ways. None of which will contribute to the overall safety of the industry.   In fact I'd venture to say that virtually NONE of the changes I've seen in the past 25 or so years regarding the laws which govern the transportation industry has contributed much at all to public safety. What HAS helped the overall safety of our industry is better equipment, better education & training of drivers and law enforcement and better <trained> dispatchers. I still get as tired now as I did 25 years ago and the changes in the hours of service regulations don't make me any more rested now than they used to. Granted, I'm a safer driver now than I used to be, but that has come through experience, education and training rather than being told when I can or can't drive, have to take a break and for how long.   And to answer the OP's initial question as it pertains to me, personally, I'm neither for or against: I'll generally be able work around it and not have much of an inconvenience, but it ticks me off when someone who doesn't know me (or any other driver for that matter), from Adam tries to make me believe they know more about my personal physiology than I do. :(

So someone made him stop his vehicle, get out and become involved in a foot pursuit of a person who was apparently not engaged in any illegal activity even after the police dispatcher advised him not to do so? Wow, the force must have been really strong in that Trayvon character for him to make Zimmerman do all that just so he might get a chance to beat Zimmerman's head against the ground. I'll repeat what I said, and highlight a couple of facts for you, since apparently you have either missed them, or are blissfully ignoring them. The EVIDENCE shows the situation came to Zimmerman. The EVIDENCE shows that Martin doubled back, to confront Zimmerman, which is what led to Martin's shooting, regardless of how you feel/what you think. The EVIDENCE shows that in fact Zimmerman was never "advised to not follow Martin", a dispatcher told him they didn't need him to do that, per the 911 call. Which basically means squat. He broke no laws by stopping his truck or keeping an eye on Martin, the only law broken that started the ball rolling was Trayvon jumping Zimmerman. So, please, tell me again about this "force" you speak of. Besides any of this, if Zimmerman broke no laws (which there has been no EVIDENCE to say he has), and presented no threat to make Martin fear for his life, he was justified to end Martin's life with his firearm to protect his own. That's what the EVIDENCE shows.

While in my experience they are not the norm, they are a sizable enough of a group that one must be cautious when dealing with MPD unless the officer is familiar and a known quantity. I have several friends on the MPD, I like and trust them. It is their coworkers I don't trust. Harsh, but prudent in my opinion.

I don't understand why this is still happening..   I know he has to live with it for the rest of his life.. but he still needs to be punished. Being careless or ignorant about where you put your weapon is no excuse. You HAVE to know where you gun is at all times when you have kids around.   So sad  but so avoidable..

03A3's are great rifles.   No need to worry about serial #'s on these or shooting "modern" ammo.  The "low/high" serial numbers only apply to Springfield Armory and Rock Island 1903's.  It does not apply to Remington and Smith Corona rifles manufactured during WWII.   That serial number gives it a born on date of February 1944, the last month of production.

Some of the worst, anti-2A cops I've talked to were from Memphis PD...made me feel like I was back in NY. Hopefully, they're not the norm there.

I don't get along well with most people on this subject. As a believer I get shunned for even harboring the thought. Oh well. As far as the church goes, well I despise organized religion and I can tell you why the church says its a sin. It means less people filling the coffers and offering plates. In the past, it would have meant less people to subjugate. It's never been about the soul, it's always been about control. Christ loves everyone and wants nothing more than peace and happiness in our lives. How does stage four stomach cancer figure into that?

While not a trucker, I am in the business.  In fact, I'm a programmer and just finished up programming the new software to track HOS violations for our OTR guys.  What a PITA!   I agree with TDR that I don't think this is going to have an effect on crashes, which is what this rule (along with CSA2010) was setup to prevent.  What it is going to do is make for a bunch of violations counting against HOS points because guys will have a hard time keeping it straight.  I'm not saying they aren't smart enough to do it, it's just that confusing.   I know my guys would hate to hear me say it, but if I were on the road everyday, I'd take an EOBR all day long just so I could stay legal.

  There is a reason that the term Safety Officer was used instead of Range Officer.    Your focus was to be - Safety.   Now we're the Home Plate Umpire, Field Judge, Head Linesman, Referee.   With the new rulebook we are expected to be in charge of the beginning and ending of the stage, enforcing the IDPA rulebook and local range regulations, making judgment calls on shooters while they shoot, and then handling the disciplinary actions within the squad.   I'll be the first one to admit that I'm watching the firearm first and always.  I tell whoever is scoring to watch for PEs that I might miss because I keeping the muzzle as my focus.  If the scorer sees anything, I ask that we discuss it After I call a clear range.   My focus will remain Safety.

Ignoring all that internet chatter, I think the threat to him is very real. The people that will go after him aren’t posting on twitter and I doubt they are the type to challenge him to gun fight. The New Black Panthers openly put a bounty on him dead or alive and the justice department stood by silently; that says a lot. There are people waiting for a reason to riot; they don’t care about Martin or Zimmerman. Either way the verdict goes; they will use it as a reason to destroy property and steal stuff.

Your absolutely right Link, we'll never know if Trayvon would have eventually turned his life around or if he would have ended up bieng in/out of prison. All we know is that he was a "troubled teen" who seemingly had embraced the thug lifestyle and despite the warnings of friends/family continued to misbehave. As his friend had predicted, Trayvon's out of control behavior did indeed earn him "one in the chest", so Trayvon was well aware of the potential consequences of the path he had chosen, and because it was his brutal assault which forced Zimmerman to end his young life, I am having a difficult time feeling any sort of sympathy for him. I'd probably had felt some sympathy for his parents had they not turned this tragic event into a racial circus, grieving is one thing, blaming "whitey" because you couldn't control your kid is another.

  I think it is funny (as in odd, not comical) that, as an HCP holder, if I were so inclined I could legally carry so many firearms on me at one time that I could barely walk, can legally have (if I wish) multiple loaded long guns behind the seat of my vehicle but could be arrested and jailed for carrying a switchblade or a knife with a blade over 4 inches in length.  Are knives even more prone to jumping out and going on a killing spree, all on their own, than guns?   I think the whole switchblade thing comes from the same, senseless 'legislating by emotion' place that makes some moronic politicians want to ban firearms just because they have features which make them 'look' scary to some observers.  It has nothing to do with actual functionality, potential lethality or potential for misuse and everything to do with switchblades upsetting some nervous Nellies' sensabilities.
