  1. Fumes...nope...WD40 sprayed all over the gun can seep into bullets. I learned that back in '75 at the Academy.  When you're on duty you want a gun that goes bang when you need it to.    If you reload you can try it yourself. Prime a case and then spray a lil WD40 into the case and onto the primer. Stick it into your gun and take it outside and see if it goes bang. I always use it to inert a primer when needed.    What's odd is we used to use WD40 to check for intake leaks on cars. If it was running real rough we'd spray it around the intake manifolds on either bank  and around the carb. You knew you found the leak when the engine smoothed right out. It burns very easily.     Personally I use 5w20 synthetic oil as a lube in all my guns. I buy a quart and fill up a couple of small plastic bottles with spouts.    Lp

  4. It has nothing to do with work ethics. It has to do with big business buying cheaper products from third world nations for resale in America. We can't compete.
  5. He'll be back on the street in a few years due to prison overcrowding.
  6. State farm for auto and homeowners for 26 years.   Lost a roof, shed, couple of rooms water damaged along with the wood floors. SF paid me 13.8k to get it all fixed.  No appreciable raises in my insurance.    Lp
  7. So it's a Mossie.  If you belong to a range keep a look out for .30-30 brass laying on the ground or go shooting with other guys  who also like lever guns. Many, many hunters do not reload and will give you their brass. Alternatively that one time expensive brass will pay for itself with all the reloads.   Lp
  8. Western Auto name on it or Savage? Nice gun, BTW. You can slick em up easy. Letme know when yer ready and I'll point and point you in the right direction   Marlin's have the micro grove barrel which, imho, is one of the best barrels for a lever gun there is. They all shoot straight and make a great deer rifle or one for a jr starting out. You can cut off the stock to fit a young'n  and stick another one on when they get older. Cheaper and effective. I'm hearing .30-30 ammo is getting a lil hard to find. You might try what I do. Every time you run across some in any gun shop or store just buy 1 or 2 and leave the rest. Hunters usually sight in at the beginning of the season with 5 rounds or so. That leave 5  for hunting and a 1/2 box for the next year. 5 boxes is a 8 year supply of ammo give or take a few since they're fun to shoot. That's leaves the next hunter a box he can pick up too.   One odd ball thing about lever guns including Marlins is the loading gate is attached to a flat piece of spring steel which is mounted to the  inside of the receiver using a machine screw. That flat piece of spring steel will bend back a small amount due to the repeated loading of  cartridges into the rifle. If it bends to far when you open the receiver and try to load another cartridge the lever will not close due to the loading gate blocking it's forward movement. Just take of the loading gate and bend it back. It will last a few more years before you have to do it again and with parts becoming harder to find it's a no cost fix.   Lp
  9. Speaking of taxes. Approx 20% of your tickets you paid to ride on an airline are taxes and they do nothing to help the FAA maintain airworthiness of the Airways or Airport. 20%! Remember that at election time.   Lp
  10. If you get a chance and know anyone who has full buckhorn rear irons sights give those a try. They act like a poor man's peep sight.  They would look kinda like this although this doesn't do it justice. (_-_). The buckhorn makes an almost perfect rear aperture circle. All ya gotta do is put the circle on the target, then check front center is dead center and squeeze it off.   I use it on .45 LC  1873 Lever Gun and it shoots within 1.5 inches iron sights for me at 100 yds which imho will knock down any deer I wanna shoot. AND....I see the deer and get a very fast acquisition of the sights to make the shot.
  11. Lever guns ain't quite like bolts guns.   2 rounds is simple at 50 yds with a bolt gun.   1. Big blank target with a black dot 2.pull the bolt, look down barrel and center it on the dot. 3.without moving rifle adjust sights to near center and squeeze one off. 4. Recenter rifle dead center on target then without moving the rifle again move the cross hairs to the bullet hole. 5. Squeeze one off and it should be within the spread of that particular manufacturers bullet, probably a within a 1/4 inch at 50 yds.   Note. you may see a larger spread with .22lr's due to distance and manufacturers bullets specs. All .22 love they're one bullet to shoot great.  The average 10/22 shoots 1/2 in or more at 50yds. Also, most mil rifles have a 2 MOA group at 100 yds, using irons sights. That includes mausers, 1903's, Mosen's and the like. If you do better with  mil spec ammo. cool!
  12. A heavy rain means you look through the scope like looking through a tunnel right to the target. WOOHOOO. The guy spotting for you will see the bullet trace all the way to that 600 yd target.   Lp   ps -  snow can be a lil bit dryer but I live shooting in the rain.
  13. I had Pneumonia and not of the walking variety around 7 years ago. I ran a 103 temp for 2.5 hours then it broke and was over. Now I get a flu shot every year. They also have a P shot, too.   I started feeling under the weather this past Wednesday, went to work on Thursday and went home early.  Went to the Doc's this morning and tested positive for flu type A(?). Bed rest until the 17th and if I get a shortness of  breath, go back in or head over to the E-Room if it's after hours. They don't have to tell me twice, been there, done that.     One a good note, for a 61 yo old phart goin on 62 my BP was 128/82. Not bad for sitting on butt all day at work and being sick.    Lp
  14. Why is it called hoarding? For the past 5 years whenever I run across a lb of reloading powder that I use I pick it up.  Not 2 or 5 or 10 lbs. 1 lb.  I can sit down an load 600 rounds of .45 Schofield in a weekend then will need another  lb to reload them again once I go out and fire them/ Is that hoarding?   I can go through a bulk box of Fed 550 count .22's in 2 days on the weekend. That means whenever I go by Walmart and see  a couple of boxes of cci 100 pcs ct .22's I'm likely to buy them.   Buying and using isn't hoarding.   I was born and raised in a time of buying when you could and waiting on things you wanted until you could obtain them. Today's reality is instant gratification whether you need it or not.    To be honest about this before the shortage it was no big deal to go in and buy a couple of 550 count bulk cases of .22's. I think they were $16 and change.   On TV a couple of months ago there was a show on CCI manufacturing plant. They put out a million or so rounds a day. Although the actual number escapes me right now it was a lot.  Let's say they run a lot of 100 rd boxes. 10 of those boxes = 1000 rds. 100 of those same boxes = 10k rounds. 1000 boxes = 100k rounds and so on. Back to Walmart.   They get a case of 20 boxes and sell 3 boxes max per person. That's 6 people buying 3 boxes each and a 7th buying 2 boxes and they're out for the day. Even with 2 cases that only makes ammo available for 13 people. With all the garbage out there about gun control people are buying up guns of all calibers at record numbers. All these new gun owners are looking for ammo along with all the guys that have had it for years. Since it's a great new hobby for them they want to buy and shoot a lot. Didn't you?   Back to Walmart again. I was there one evening when they got a shipment in an brought it out. They had 2 cases of 9mm, 2 cases of .40 and a case of .45 acp. Each case held like 10-20 boxes in them. Do the same math and all the new folks buying new carry pistols who need ammo to go shoot them and qualify for their hand carry permits. They don't reload so it's buy new and shoot em up. The difference with centerfire is the new folks get their permit and stop shooting as much. They only need a box or two around the house. Competition shooters, on the local level, can go through 300-500 rounds easily in a weekend but reload and normally do not buy new ammo off the store shelves.   IMHO the shortage is largely due to the larger number of new shooters now needing ammo. Look at the for sale boards. Everyone is selling a gun of some sort. They even toss in a box of ammo from time to time. If you buy/used gun are you only gonna run 1 box of ammo thru it or load up on some ammo so you can go to the range and shoot until you're satisfied that day?   I don't the resellers have actually grasped the huge rise of users and have not stocked accordingly. I'd bet WalMart is getting the same supply they've been getting for years. Now add those trying to grab and scalp isn't helping anyone except their greed for money.   And I would't buy from them, ever. I would rather mix my own black powder and shoot a smoke pole before I'd buy from them.    Sorry for being so long winded.   Lp   Edited to add normal hunters don't use much ammo but black rifle guys go through lots of it with some buying new and some reloading.
  15. Airlines cancel flights so they don't have to pay the delay fines imposed on them a few years ago. Major airports except EWR can usually close, sweep/plow a runway in approx. 45 minutes. That means multiple runway airports normally continue operations using 1 rwy while plowing the other. However, Chattanooga looks pretty good except for some wind.   Here's the current weather:   KCHA  061353Z VRB05KT 10SM SCT028 SCT180 BKN250 M08/M10 A3023 RMK AO2 SNB1257E27   Forecast KCHA  061135Z 0612/0712 32015G25KT P6SM -SN BKN025 FM061600 31015G25KT P6SM SCT025 FM061900 32015G26KT P6SM BKN035 FM070100 30012KT P6SM OVC025   The visibility to clear and a million as the ceiling is 25,000 ft, the temp is 17F, it's windy with winds out of the north at guesting to 28 mph.it snowed for approx 1/2 hour then  stopped and you might have some light snow for another hour or so.  A note about the winds...the winds are just about down the runway with almost no crosswind component.    There are no active notams reporting any lousy runway conditions so it looks ok to go. The light snow they had probably blew across the  runway due to the winds.
  16. My best deal was a Sheriff's Deputy had died and a couple of friends and I were reading the want ads. Seems his with was selling off all  his guns. When we got there she told us to go out in the back yard and try out whatever we wanted. She then said all guns were $100 each. I bought a M1 Carbine, A Ruger .44 mag Carbine and a S&W Model 66 1st edition. Total cost 300.   Before ya'll call me a bad guy the year was 1973 and that was a fair price for those guns used. :D   The real issue is will my wife, the widow, sell off all my guns for $100 each!   Lp
  17. Our local range said the same thing but that way they get to charge you $10 to add another gun to your qualification. They said I can come back at any time and add whatever gun by shooting it.    I don't believe, nor did they ever say it in their own classes, that anyone has to amend the type of weapon they carry and they spent an awful amount of time going over all the laws of the state.    I believe if you discharge any weapon in an incident that you will be looked at harder.   Lp
  18. Control the media and you control the "truth". Why would anyone expect anything less?   The days of Watergate are long gone.   Lp
  19. muahahahahahaha!     (cudnt hep myself)   Did you know they throw in a chia pet with each shotgun?  :D   Lp
  20. Ring neck rooster it is and my favorite food. I hunted when I lived in South Dakota for 2 1/2 years. I'd rather eat them than the best prepared chicken in the good ole U.S.A.!   Lp
  21. I'd love to if it wasn't 240 miles to you from Bartlett. That's like 4 hours each way and being old an' all.....   I'd tell ya what I gots ta shoot but it won't help me get over yonder.     Lp
  22. That seems to happen to us after every storm too. In the past 4-5 years comcast has come to the house 12-15 times. They've replaced our DVR's 3-4 times. All the cables have been rerun. We got a supposedly brand new DVR from them about a month ago. It took 2 weeks to get it running somewhat correctly. POS comes to mind. I'm completely tired of it and my wife finally agreed to move on.    Lp
  23. I'm call Direct tomorrow. I plan on keeping my old road runner service (now comcast) for the internet. My "package deal" through comcast just went up to $200 bucks and we don't have hbo, sho, or tmc. we do have show and encore. Their service in Memphis has been substandard. We have lots of outages from every reason they can think of, except of course, they're lousy. We have had it for long time and my wife was...the only thing that kept m with it. Yesterday we got a $200 bill and she finally woke up and said lets move to another carrier.   Facts: the telephone line from comcast part of the router. Lose the router for any reason and you lose; TV, Internet and Phones. Any power outage does exactly the same.    For example, we have an ice storm or tornado in the vicinity with 60 gusting 70 mph winds that knock down trees into power lines. The only thing that worked in the past was a land line phone. We've even lost cell phone reception due to storms. Not good when you'd like to advise other family members or work that everyone is safe. The only thing that worked was a land line.    My plan tomorrow is to call Direct and get their basic tv dish service, call ma bell and get a land line and call comcast to cancel everything but internet service. I should probably save $100 a month. With Direct I will get free genie and lock in my price for 2 years. I believe I will have to pay  an additional fee for the HD channels but at $29 to $37 a month I think I can afford the additional few bucks. I think land lines with Long Distance  are up to $35? Then, $39 for comcast internet service which is much better than DSL or one way satellite.   Lp
  24. I just my December bill and we don't have hbo, max, show, or tlc and our new costs over $200!   Their service is lousy. We have a lot of outages and now they want us to pay more for that crap?   Anyone using something different? AT&T? Direct TV? Likes, dislikes?     Thanks   Lp
