Guns and Leather up in Greenbriar is open late with an indoor range and rentals. Been in a few times and seem to be good folks. Really like Ruger GP100's in 357 great mid size easy to learn handgun. XD's and SIG's are good too once you learn to operate them. Some of the double stack grips are a bit large for small hands.

Stopping percentages with hollow point ammo is about even between 9mm and .45. The distinction come from ball ammo, where .45 is king.

I carry 9mm, 357 SIG, and .40 and my favorite is 9mm for a variety of reasons. It is by far the most versatile caliber of any of them, especially for your wife.

XD9, Glock 17, FNP9, Walther P99 (used), any SIG (used) would all be good choices. How's that for narrowing it down!

I am definitely getting her some trigger time. But I am thinking a 9mm semi auto could be quite effective with right round. Anyone no where to pick up good used one locally (central Tenn). Hell, I ride a motorcycle(less gas $) for my daily transportation;so, any where in state would be within reach.

Haha nice rifle....hope you dont miss the BG and hit your neighbor :tinfoil:

I cleared plenty of rooms with M4's. Even downed a few of the mujahadeen with them. If it wasn't for the price and keeping it safe for the kids, I'd have one setup just like my army one. I'd also have an AK just to show both sides of the story.

Or going through the perp and hitting the neighbor. That 308 is a nasty round as far as penatration goes. Had one in 1980 in Wa state, we used to take it to the quarry and see just how much junk it would go through.:D

I really have no experience with revolvers. I have shot 1000's of rounds from M9's; but, I am open to the idea of a revolver. I small children and would keep the weapon locked up next to the bed. The shotgun would need a gunsafe, but a pistol can have a small lock box; otherwise, a shotgun would be the perfect answer.

If the children can't keep their hands off'n mommy and daddy's tools then keep the shotgunh on a high shelf or lay it under the bed and combat load it when you need it. Keep the shotshells in a bio-metric lock box screwed to the bed frome or closet shelf. It only takes a second to combat load a shotgun.

I would submit that taking your children to the range and teaching them to shoot or at the very least, safe gun handling removes the mystery and makes the firearm no longer an object of curiosity but something to be respected and used only whith mom or dad until they are at least old enough to drive a car. It worked with my kids and has worked for millions of others. But, you and your wife are the adults there so you will have to make the decision based on your beliefs.

You might look at a taurus 24/7. Supposed to be a pretty nice piece in that price range, although I've never shot one.

For civilian use a revolver makes alot of sense. Probably a ruger gp100 in .357 might do it in your price range. A used smith m19 is a real nice wheelgun in that price range.

Could look at an RIA 1911 if you like retro. :tinfoil:

Or really, a 92 runs about 5 bones.

If by handgun you mean my Remington 870 . . .

I tend to err on the side of "point in the general direction and pull". Sure, it has a slow draw but I'm all about good coverage. :tinfoil:

If you are looking for a HD pistol, why not take your $500 and find a nice clean used Taurus .357/.38 and then find a nice clean used Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 12 or 20 guage and then take your wife out to dinner with what's left over. That would pretty much cover all your bases. :D

BTW, thanks for taking on the bad guys for us! I hope your home for good! :)

Your lucky day. I have one for sell on here. SP101 in .357 and you can shoot .38's through it if you want a lighter recoil. The picture is on my photo gallery page. The sale add and accessories are on on here as well listed under FS or Trade Ruger SP101.

Ruger SP 101 . . . revolvers never fail.

Wrong. Plenty of examples abound of revolvers that went boom instead of bang, etc.

As an overall percentage those "examples" are irrelevant. In a study of NYC cops over a 20 year period there was not a single instance of an officer's revolver failing.

If you want 100% reliability, get a rock.

I'm just saying that "revolvers never fail" is misleading. There are plenty of examples of Rugers (and I'm a big Ruger fan) where the cylinder / barrel alignment came from the factory outside of the acceptable tolerances.

They do fail. They do not have the common place jams and limp wrist issues that semi-autos do.
