Gotta love the Taurus hate.  My PT145 has been great.  It's a good thing S&W and Springfield haven't had any recent handgun recalls, and we all know that a Glock has never broken in recorded history....

Anyway... what do you intend for this gun?  Home defense, carry, plinking, ....?  All of the above?   There's almost too many choices these days.   The PT92 is a fine choice.  There's probably a couple dozen others that fit the bill as well.  As other folks have said, go to a shop and/or a range and try out as many as you can lay hands on.  Find what fits your hand, eye, and budget the best.

It ain't 'hate'.  It's an informed opinion based on LOTS of reported problems with Taurus quality, durability and lack of customer service.  However, if a Taurus is what peels yer banana, then go for it!  But the no whining rule goes into effect.  :D

I'm likely one of the few that have never had a single problem with any Taurus. Loved the crap out of my PT92 AFS and kick myself every day for selling it. Slide and action were like butter. Was heavy no doubt, but loved that gun.

My reason for it over the Baretta was 1 simple thing. The decock / safety and the fact it returns to neutral on the Taurus where the Baretta stays in decock.

I'm probably even more narrowed out when i say I love my TCP 380 too!

Recently picked up a TCP from a member here for my wife. We haven't shot it yet, but I have high hopes for it..

I do not know the going prices, but a used beretta should not be that much more than a new taurus....  and while I am fine with taurus, beretta is better made.   If the price difference is more than 100 bucks, the taurus should be fine, I just suspect that there are a ton of good used 92s out there for a decent price due to them being popular with police and military back when.

Are there any suggestions of other brands of firearms I might look at.

I loved my Walther P99. That was in .40 but I hear the 9 is pretty good too. I am looking to replace it but it has to be the AS trigger.

I've been tempted by a taurus pt99 at times. I like the safety design compared to the beretta 92.

They look good in pictures but every time I've got down to handling a pt99 and trying to talk myself into buying it, the pistols just looked slightly rough. Defects in the stainless finish, machining marks outside and inside.

Am guessing the design might be very reliable even if the pistols look rough, but it always chased me off because the beretta 92's I've looked at are typically real clean machined, and don't cost that much more.

Maybe most pt99s don't look rough, brand new in the box, but that was my experience on several occasions. Edited by Lester Weevils

Buy a Glock 19 and be done with it. You will end up there anyways.

Believe it or not the Glock is the only gun he said he will not buy nor will he buy anything that even remotely is shaped like a Glock. He does not want a fat bodied bulky looking firearm so is it is a square block looking gun it will not even be considered by him. He said he has seen them and they profile a lot when concealed carry. He has spotted many of them on people while just walking around in stores and knows it in most instances they are Glocks. My other Grandson owns a Glock and loves it and he is a deputy sheriff in Cheatham County. Difference between them is he weighs in at about 325 and the one looking for a gun is weighing it at about 160. He has handled the Glock my big grandson carries and it is not for him.......
