Sorry if I misunderstood. You just said the peaceful protesters message had been hijacked. While this is true, I was just trying to point out that I didn't see very many peaceful protesters.

That's because peaceful protests don't make for good ratings. There were actually many more peaceful protesters out in Bawlimore than rioters. Here's more from the files of s*** you won't see on the news.http://twitchy.com/2015/04/28/god-bless-him-more-than-1000-baltimore-residents-volunteer-to-help-clean-up-after-last-nights-riots-photos/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

It doesn't matter if he had 24,000 arrests on his rap sheet. Seeing the police and running is suspicious, but not illegal. Don't get me wrong: a dirt-bag is a dirt-bag, and play stupid games; win stupid prizes and all: however, from the accounts posted so far the police had no cause to chase this cat down to begin with.

He sure shouldn't have died from a severed spinal cord. This one isn't the same as the Michael Brown thing at all.

I just want to point out ONE small thing:

If you have ever complained about the police, or bitched that they shouldn't be allowed to carry certain types of firearms or wear certain types of body armor, or wondered loudly to anyone who would listen why that cop who pulled you over was gruff and didn't cut you the amount of slack that you thought they should...

Keep in mind that the assholes you see destroying Baltimore on TV are cut from the same cloth as those that the cops in your town have to deal with all day, every day.

YOU are the exception to their norm.  So when they encounter YOU, there was a line of "animals" ahead of you that spent up all the patience that cop writing your speeding ticket might have had for the day.

That's all.  :)

True but I always treated and later ensured the officers I supervised treated the most belligerent offenders as professionally as possible and politely as they would allow. Most of the time that paid off either in calming the offender, later dealings with that individual or others who witnessed same.

Many times people confuse very direct and brisk action or directions from police officers as abusive not understanding they've simply not been humored or offered differential treatment. Don't try to read what isn't there into what you don't understand and don't expect immediate gratification.

His record may explain why he ran. It doesn't explain why he is dead.

I think that explanation is key to this whole thing. Well said, sir.

Dunno how that TGO David thing got up there. Sorry.

I used to work at the circulation desk at Lawson-McGhee Library in downtown Knoxville.  We dealt with all the vagrants, homeless, mental cases and perverts that downtown Knoxville had to offer.  Also, being situated right next to the federal building, we often received the fallout from people who were angry at the government folks there and were taking it out on us (after all, we were government employees.)  I have had a known nut-job - I mean crazy as a loony bird - stand on the other side of the desk from me and try to grab a pair of scissors while asking where the guard who was usually near the desk had gone.  I have been compared to the Nazis by one woman who was yelling at me because I wouldn't let her friend check out a book (neither of them lived in Knox County and so were ineligible for library cards unless they paid for them.)  I have been threatened with physical harm for the smallest, stupidest of reasons.  We dealt with guys who would just about lie on the floor on one side of the shelves trying to look up the dress/skirt of the woman or even little girl on the other side.  We also had our share of 'jerkwads' when I worked as the branch manager of the Carter branch.  We didn't even have security guards there and the couple of times I had to call the cops it took fifteen to twenty minutes for them to arrive.  So I, too, have dealt with that line of 'animals'.  The difference was that I did not have a gun, baton, pepper spray, handcuffs, police powers and a radio to call for backup when I had to confront the people causing problems or printing porn on our computers and tell them to leave (most were embarrassed at having been caught and did so quietly but a couple got angry and belligerent.)  Further, I was expected to treat each and every person who came to the desk politely, professionally and without an 'attitude' that came from the previous person being a jackhole.  If I can manage to do so (and I did) then I expect other people who have to deal with such things to treat people who aren't animals, jerkwads or jackholes with at least a modicum of courtesy and respect regardless of how much of a jackhole the person - or the twenty people - that came before them were being.. Anyone who cannot manage to do so, IMO, should be looking for another line of work.

I do not say this to challenge you (you are the forum admin so I would lose, anyhow) or tick you off.  I am also not trying to go all 'mall ninja' (or 'library ninja') and act like I was a defacto cop.  I am just trying to give a little bit of a different perspective.

I would prefer that if somebody needs to get hit in the head with a stick, they get hit in the head with a stick. I'm sure it got abused plenty, but the world was generally a more polite place.

That's sounds all nice and fine as long as you're not the one getting hit in the head with a stick. And before you say something along the lines of "don't do things that make you need to get hit" remember that for the poor and/or minorities in certain communities their existence was considered reason enough for the hickory shampoo.

Than you for doing so, for setting an example for others and for ensuring that those you supervised did the same.

I can sort of understand the Mayor's decision in this one.  Letting the rage burn itself out is a technique.  I'm not saying it's the right one, but I'm also not saying it's the wrong one.

Who is going to pay for cleaning up the damage?  Who is going to pay for the destruction of property?  Who isn't going to try and sue the mess out of the city of Baltimore after the Mayor let's this go on?  Ultimately, the poor taxpayers are the ones that end up footing the bill.  The National Guard should have been called out a lot sooner to stop this type of nonsense.

I've been following this story today. Lots of peaceful protesters out and about. There are also lots of reports of citizens out cleaning their neighborhoods. I hope that these stories get looped as many times as the CVS fire.

Maryland is a solidly Democrat state with a Democrat state government. A stone's throw away are a Democrat President, titular head of his party, and his Democrat Attorney General. Both have come out in the recent past and said that the American police are mistreating blacks, and now we have a black man killed under seemingly suspicious circumstance while in police custody, and the black community is rioting against the cops. That isn't exactly the best recipe I can think of for a Democrat politician to be getting tough with the rioters right off the bat, especially by a military force. I personally agree with you sir, it is always best to address these problems decisively early on, but politics being what they are, I think a Democrat state government would rather have eaten glass than to have called out the National Guard in this particular situation until they were forced to. The governor is a Republican.  Baltimore has been Democrat for 50+ years, and has elected black mayors 4 of the past 5 times.  A can of worms has been opened up by the mayor whether she realizes it or not.  If my business or home was burned and looted, I'd sue the city.

Wow. After postponing two games, the Orioles are gonna play tomorrow, but with no fans allowed in stadium! That surely must be a first for MLB, playing a game that's closed to the public?

Insurance Companies and Federal Grants will pay some of the weight which of course comes back on taxpayers and rate payers. Its not fair but life isn't fair either. People will most certainly sue the City Gov't and name the Mayor, all of which will cost additional monies. I never expected the NG to be called out until after the first night of rioting, politicians can and will say they didn't know it'd be that bad. Call them liars all you like but they'll only look at you and smile.

Been a very long time since I have watched a baseball game, but I am thinking this might be one I try to find some video of after the fact. Thanks and very interesting!
