  1. Well my daughter and I bumped a deer walking in and got into the blind a little after 2. It was quiet. There was a large fox squirrel with a white face running around but he was the only thing moving until 4:30. We were sitting side by side but facing opposite directions so we could cover more ground. Right at 4:30 a deer just appears about 35 yards from the blind. I whisper deer. She slowly turns around and gets the scope on the deer. I am using my binoculars and see it is the same little spike I filmed Saturday morning. I tell her not to shoot because he is really young. We are watching him for a minute and she whispers deer and its another buck. This buck had come up from behind us and was about 20 yards out the left window. I tell her not to move, he is going to feed to right in front of you. He was focused on the small spike and paid the blind no attention. This was an older deer with a deformed rack. He had a nub on one side and a fork on the other. I told her she could cull that one if she wanted it. While waiting for a good shot she whispers deer again. She spied a tail about 60 yards away kinda in front of us and off to the left. Well the buck finally gave her a nice broadside shot and she squeezed the trigger. After the smoke cleared I could only see the spike running away. She said the other deer ran off to the right and it looked like it was running funny but disappeared. The last time I took her hunting she missed a big buck and was worried she had missed again. I reloaded and we were waiting a minute and then I see another deer. It was the one she spied earlier. It was doe and was feeding right to us. Then another deer ran up from behind us to right in front of us. it was the small spike that had just off. The doe feeds over and it is really small and we decided to let her grow up some. Well now it is getting dark and we still need to go look for the other deer but the spike and doe do not want to leave. Young deer are really stupid. We start making a little noise and they just look at us. They are only about 20 yards aways. I finally stand up and start zipping the all the windows up. We both get out of the blind and the two deer finally decide to leave. We walk over to where we though the deer was to look for blood. I forgot to bring a flashlight so we were both using our lights on our phones. We can't find anything. We are looking for little drops of blood and I come across a big spray of blood. Caitlin got real excited knowing she did not miss. We follow the trail for about 15 yards and there is a lot of blood being sprayed. I am looking down and Caitlin says there he is. You could just make out the white of his belly and tail We get over to him and he doe not have the one antler. it has broken off. She starts to look for it while I get ready to gut the deer. I then spotted the antler right next to a tree about 5' away. i guess he hit his head as he fell and broke off the antler. I think I will let the deer hang till this weekend before I process him. Then it is venison chili time.

  2. I got a call yesterday that we will not begin work until tomorrow. Just what I wanted to hear. They were really moving this morning. This amorous fella was chasing a doe. I don't know what he weighs, but I about never got him in the truck!

  3. I finally connected. That big ole doe stepped out at 3:01. The Hornady FPB 300 grain .50 did remarkable. The deer was dead before it hit the ground at 70 yards. I had been running powerbelts in my .45 and did not like them at all. Of the last 5 deer i shot with that load 4 ran over 100 yards. I got this CVA Wolf .50 and really like it. Trying to find the right load to make my .45 a 200 yard gun.

  4. Wow, just after my last post I see the silhouette of a deer in some heavy brush to my left. I bleat and it shows itself at 20 yards giving me a nice neck shot. 6 pointer I haven't seen before. Spread right inside of the ears, and a pretty rack. I decided to let him walk. First deer I've had the chance to pull the trigger on in three solid days of hunting.

  5. I really like mine a lot. Like any inexpensive gun I suppose they can be hit or miss but mine is definitely a hit, especially for what it is. That said, I bought mine before Heritage was bought out by Taurus so I can't speak to any changes, if there have been any, since then. I did notice in the Black Friday ad that someone posted in another thread yesterday that Cabela's is supposed to have a 9 shot version with 'black pearl' style grips and with the .22LR cylinder only for $129 (used to be able to order WMR cylinders directly from Heritage but, again, I don't know if that is still the case.) This was from a few years ago at the Spring Creek Shooting Range. As a lark - and because I had been consistently hitting hanging metal plates that were at 50 yards - I emptied a cylinder at a (large) target at 100 yards. Walked out to get the target and realized I had managed to put two holes in the paper, at the edge. As I and the folks I was shooting with were the only people there at the time I decided to try and 'dial it in' to see what I could do. The colored circles and the legend that interprets them tells most of the rest of the story. I was shooting off hand (I stink at shooting from a rest) in more or less a Weaver stance with a two hand hold using the factory iron sights. We didn't have a spotting scope so I was walking 100 yards out and 100 yards back between each cylinder full to check the target and trying to remember my POA relative to POI from the previous cylinder full so I could make 'Kentucky windage' adjustments. I only shot three cylinders full partly because I was tired of walking out and back and partly because I decided to quit while I was 'ahead' on the third cylinder. This is the only handgun I own with which I have ever attempted a 100 yard shot. In the hands of a better shooter I think the results could be downright impressive. For perspective and to give an idea of target size, my Rough Rider is a 6.5 inch barreled model. Mine is also a 6 shot model (they weren't even making the 9 shot at the time.)

  6. Gun show loophole, isn’t a loophole at all it’s made up. It’s just like any other private party sale in TN. Private party sale in TN, you give me money, I give you gun, end of transaction. Only difference is instead of it being listed online to get an audience, where there is a record, it’s two people meeting face to face with no paper trail or electronic record. The antis don’t care about crime, just having a record of where the guns are so they can confiscate them in the future.

  8. Any LEO may disarm any permit holder per 39-17-1351 (t). Concern for safety is the only reason needed. Given today's issues, I think any officer would be given wide leeway in what he considers reasonable.

  9. Bought an almost new champion trap from a guy that said it was "busted" it kept breaking clays. Spent ten minutes making adjustments and it works perfectly. I mounted it on a pallet to make it easy to move with the battery etc. Maybe I'll have time to see how I do against it tomorrow...

  11. The old man loved black powder pistols. The 2 I brought from her were 2 other much nicer Old Army. This one may have been his first, there is a bit of pitting under the trigger. I already know if I rebuild it the trigger is getting replaced. I am already getting ideas.

  12. Seeing that it is a black powder arm, there probably isn't any record on it. I'd bet the old man decided he didn't like cleaning it and robbed parts from it for a Blackhawk.

  13. Just for piece of mind I'd get it checked. It's probably fine but if it does turn out stolen you can tell the cops it was in a box of donated items and no idea where it came from.

  14. I had the same mentality, eventually I had to switch to "if he dies it won't be because I killed him." I know a lot of people around here shoot whatever, and my camera footage shows it. I'm on 42 acres in Wilson County surrounded by farms and Corp of Engineer land. Ran cameras all summer, I have two 4 pointers and two spikes running around here, a couple of lone does, and a bunch of fawns. There is a bruiser I've seen across the road and I found I couple big rubs in a thicket. I'll leave the little ones alone and maybe they will stay here where they are safe for now.

  15. That's a good looking deer Greg, congratulations! It was windy here this morning and I didn't wear enough clothes, went in about 8:30 without seeing anything. Saw a nice doe on the way to my stand this afternoon while on the four wheeler. Didn't spook it, she just eased I along, hopefully we'll reconnect before dark.

  16. The two buck limit, deer hunting t.v. shows, or something have seemed to finally change the mindset of a lot of hunters here. It seems most of us are now passing up the year old bucks we used to shoot. This is resulting, at least in my area, in some nice mature bucks walking around. I used to think "well, if I don't shoot it, he'll be popped as soon as he tops the next hill". So did most everybody else.

  21. Yessir! Oh every one is a trophy to me, I’m just working on discipline and learning the hard way in the journey. As far as how the ball bounces, I 100% agree. Look how many people go out one time and kill a buck that would give me a heart attack haha! Heck I’ve definitely gotten able to see more deer and enjoy watching them eat, flirt during rut, etc. 15 years ago I’d shoot the first deer I saw and couldn’t have been happier. I didn’t know people sat out to watch, pass, and wait till later. It’s very different and enjoyable at the same time.

  22. The problem with negotiations with the left is that there is no give and take. It's the whole piece of cake principle again: https://www.everydaynodaysoff.com/2013/11/08/cake-and-compromise-illustrated-guide-to-gun-control/ The gun grabbers don't want to compromise, they want the whole cake, even if they have to take it one bite at a time.

  25. I actually have both the motor for foot launch and a light air trike that I can attach it to as well. When my knee won't allow for the foot launch. More experience more wind you can fly in. Best time for a newbie is evenings and early morning which for me will be a nice peaceful time to fly. Sunrise and sunset for now.
