Remington 700 Unintentional fire?

I saw one of the news stations was running a special report on Remington 700's going off without the trigger being pulled. Anyone heard of this or seen the report? I can't remember which station it was, but was hoping someone else caught it. I got a 700 in the safe, so I'm kinda interested in what they have to say.

EDIT -

Google IS your friend.

Yeap. We were watching TV night before last and saw the commercial for it.

FWIW, almost everyone I've known that has owned firearms has owned a 700. None have ever misfired. I've never heard of one ever doing it in passing either.

Sounds like a case of a few folks screwing with a screw they ought not have screwed with, as they didn't fully understand how their weapon functions. It'd be like attempting a brakejob on your car without any prior knowledge, jacking something up, then suing the manufacturer because the brakes failed and you crashed it.

There is going to be a CNBC Investigation called Remington Under Fire Wednesday at 9pm Eastern 8pm Central

I plan on checking it out just because I like guns.

I was taught proper gun handling and safety rules, and I have always practiced them. The thought of having a "accident" and killing somebody scares the hell out of me. With that said, when I first started hunting, I was using a rifle a friend had, and it did discharge in the mannor described by the complaints. I cannot tell you for sure what the make and model it was, but I do not think it was a 700. Either way, it was pointed into the ground, per safety rules, when I tried to unload it. This model had to be in the fire position to work the action. The safety was very stiff, but when it did disengage, it sent a 30-06 round in the ground about 6 inches from my foot. I had never heard of this happening, so I was doubting myself even though I was nearly positive I had not touched the trigger. I was telling another friend about it, and he said he had had a rifle do the same thing. I described the safety and action and everything, and he said it sounded like it was the same model he had.

I think the 700 is a fine rifle, but I also know anything mechanical can and does from time to time malfunction. We trust guns with our lives and the safety of others, so it is un-nerving to thinking such things can happen. However, based on my experience and because of the gravity of the trust we place in these mechanical items, I believe it would be irresponsible to quickly write it off as user error.

It appears from the video that the police sniper pulled the trigger but the rifle didn't discharge. When he touched the bolt, it fired. Sounds like a burr or something causing the firing pin to snag. I'd expect a police armorer to be able to figure that out and fix it, so maybe it's not that simple.

Note that the video says there are "thousands of complaints" and "more than 75 lawsuits". I'd guess that total production of 700 series rifles numbers in the millions. While the consequences are dire, in reality that's not what I'd consider a big problem. Problems in the 200ppm or less range are incredibly difficult to identify and fix. At a previous employer, I spent 2 years trying to solve a 150ppm manufacturing defect problem. The consequences were significant, but the cause nearly impossible to isolate. We made over 1 million of these items per year. I doubt Remington makes that many rifles, so you can see the difficulty in studying the problem. The only true solution I found was far too expensive to implement cost effectively. At the end of the day, the management decided to put a couple bandaids on it and move on to the next problem. Business as usual. It'll be interesting to see what, if anything, comes of this.

I heard this a couple years ago about it. From what I remember they said that bumping the bolt can make the gun fire or something like that. I have never had this happen with mine and it is older model, it was originally my father's gun.

Looking at the video of the sniper, I'm wondering if the bolt was not completely closed. He pulled the trigger which released the striker from the sear but only after fully closing the bolt did the striker release the spring tension. Not real good from a safety standpoint but probably easily fixed.

...Curious that this comes out less than 2 weeks from voting day....

I believe you have put your finger directly on it. The great symbol of the Tea Party is the minuteman armed with his rifle. rifle = bad. Tea Party = bad. A bunch of rogue nuts = bad for the country.

Having said all that; i doubt it will work. I believe the average guy is more afraid of rogue government now than the Tea Party minuteman. I see that as a good thing.

Paraphrasing what the infamous Karl Marx (....the left's real "Patron Saint"....) said in his intro the the Communist Manifesto (...the sacred text for this socialist trash...): "....There is a spectre haunting the "ruling class" in America today. The spectre of defeat of soft socialism and the casting out of the "ruling elites (...and the realignment [...or demise...] of some of the political parties...)"!..... Real American Citizens arise! You have nothing to loose but your chains !!..." I admit it's a bit over the top; but i believe its exactly right.

From the point of view of the condescending liberal elite, there could be only one explanation for our failure to embrace their extirpation of the middle class in pursuit of a Changed America consisting only of the rulers and the welfare-dependent ruled: we just aren't thinking clearly. The Manchurian Moonbat hawks another loogie and spits it in our face:

Americans are so "scared" they're not thinking straight about the upcoming elections, President Obama said over the weekend, as he sought to explain why voters are turning to Republican candidates. …

"People out there are still hurting very badly, and they are still scared. And so part of the reason that our politics seems so tough right now, and facts and science and argument does [sic] not seem to be winning the day all the time, is because we're hard-wired not to always think clearly when we're scared," Obama said at a Democratic fundraiser Saturday in Boston.

We're scared all right. Our country has never been in such serious peril.

When we politically incorrect little people get scared, we cling to our guns and Bibles — and our Constitution.

Our sneering moonbat ruling class had better be scared too. They've used their control of the media to push the pendulum as far to the left as it's going to go without serious resistance. Now comes the backlash.

We're scaredy-cats if we don't embrace his ruin of America.

On a tip from Wyatt's Torch. Cross-posted at Moonbattery.

Keep up the good work!

Kind regards

At a WMA hunt in south GA about 15 years ago I seen a Remington 700 fire a round with the safty on and a hand no where near the trigger. Guy had been walking around the swamps down there trying to shoot a pig. He walked up to my dad and me and was talking to us and he went to lean his rifle against a tree. He had one hand on the barrel and when the butt hit the ground it went off. Scared the crap out of all off us. he was trying to figure out what happened checked the safty and it was on. I had the same rifle he did and when we got home my dad called Remington and asked them about it. He was told that some older guns the springs were weak and that after along period of time walking with a load gun across your back on a sling the spring could move a bit and let this happen, but it was very rare. Later that season we ran into that guy again and he said he had sent the gun to Remington and that he had a broken spring.

What did you expect from CNBC.. come on!

It ain't just CNBC, it's all of them, including Fox. They're all full of :poop:.

The Rem 700 thing is real, lawsuits and all. I did a lot of research when I bought mine. AFIK, it's the most popular center fire bolt gun of all time. Years ago, when the lawsuits started, Remington decided to just adjust the trigger for a heavier pull instead of redesigning it. It's possible to adjust them for a lighter pull, but you can only go so far before it becomes unsafe. My solution was to change the trigger group to a better design.

We live in a world that overreacts to any kind of gun incident. There have been several incidents with 700 triggers over the years. It doesn't matter if it's only .00001% of the total number of 700's sold, not to a bedwetter anyway.

Remington should have redesigned that trigger, for their own good, when this all started years ago.

Dude... I am fairly aware of the tea party. I have no idea what their "great" symbol is. I am going to go out on a limb and say that the average person has no ****ing clue what if any symbol they have. The tea party is something I hear the news mention but it really amounts to two things to most people. Jack is the first and Ill let you guess the other.
