Kelly Kettle?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone used one of these before? Also for those involved in metalurgy, would alum be safe to drink out of after being heated up like that? Just curious more than anything really, wouldn't mind having something like this in my Go-Bag.

A number of companies make camp cook sets out of aluminum. That obviously isn't anything definitive from a safety perspective, but the practice is, at least, fairly common.

As for the Kelly Kettle, they're a tad expensive and bulky for me. It's a solid design though and would probably serve you well.

The only health rap I've heard about aluminum cookware and cans, are some allegations that trace aluminum consumed from beverages and cooked food contributes to alzheimers later in life. Dunno one way or t'other. Too much iron is bad for you after you pass middle age as well (iron cookware), and of course plastic supposedly causes cancer and big-boobed, small-balled males. :)

The video shows roasting marsh mellows over the fire.  Do not do that without water in the kettle.  The water will keep the metal cool(er).

As others have said... perfectly safe.  Perhaps a slight metallic taste to the water, but it shouldn't leach anything harmful.  Kinda bulky for backpacking.

I have one of these in my kit. 24 oz single wall cook pot with two 10 oz cups. Small, portable, light weight, works great boiling water or coffee, and you can can cook soup and other stuff in it also. Walmart has them for $14, and they are a great deal for that price

Really just looking for something light weight to boil water in...

I keep a Blue enamel metal cup in my Get Home Bag. You can certainly boil water in it. It's relatively small and that sucker get hot...but it serves my purpose.

I keep a couple of small ziplock bags with instant coffee, hot chocolate, and instant soup in it to conserve space.

As thin as it is I wouldn't trust it for a protracted situation...months yes, but not years.

I like the Stanley setup Spots.

I have one of the blue cups you mentioned. I use to tote a small stainless coffee pot and that cup in my camp gear and my get home gear. Yeah it added weight and bulk, but I've found its a fair trade off for the mood boost I get with a cup or 5 of real coffee, and the effect is ten fold when I'm in a bad situation like heavy rains, cold weather, etc. The stanley kit has replaced it for everything but car camping. Ive done normal percolator coffee and instant with it and love it.

I have the same thing but I haven't used it yet. I'll be trying it in a few weeks when we go camping in Big South Fork. Should be fun.

What other reccomndations could the TGO community make? The only cook wear gear I have is my Vietnam era mess kit. Perhaps one of those military coffe mugs? Like this...

Hard to beat a canteen cup!!!  Great piece if gear there and they can be had for fairly cheap.

But my favorite set up is a Stanley Cook Set, another great piece of gear.

I team the Stanley Cook Set up with a MSR Pocket Rocket.
