Question on what gun for civil unrest

I guess if SHTF I would have my ol trusty MAK90 ready with 5-30 rnd mags loaded in my E.German ammo bag/pouch. Well 4 in the bag and one in the gun. If I had the bucks right now I would buy either a M1A SOCOM, and many mags and a few K of ammo, or the Ruger SR7.62 with mags and ammo. I would like the extra power and reach of the 7.62 NATO/.308 and of course a good optical scope mounted so that you can also use your iron sights. Right now I feel decently armed with an AK and a Glock21. At least I don't have to fuss with cleaning equipment and those ridiculas malfunction drills. :)

Way too much mention of shotguns in this thread.

I'm not too worried about civil unrest perpetrated by small birds or locked doors.

Shotguns can serve the purpose just fine in a civil unrest scenario.  I'd have a handgun as backup, but I would have a handgun as a backup with an AR or AK as well.

The mob mentality is to follow the person in front of you and any courage in that mob is collective by default.  If a mob comes to a persons house with ill intent and the first one through the door gets a slug center mass, I think the rest would be pushing over each other in retreat after loosing their collective courage.

If I had to chose between my shotgun and my AR, I am taking my AR.  But if all can get my hands on is my shotgun, I'm comfortable in my ability survive a civil unrest scenario.

I can fire 20 rounds of slug out to 100 yards and hit a pizza box, yea I hate pizza boxes.

Then switch to a 10 round mag of "00" buck.

Imagine a city like Nashville or Memphis under a hypothetical civil unrest scenario. Shotguns would be invaluable self defense weapons in places like these and many other urban areas.

A shotgun is a very versatile tool, you can load it with all sorts of interesting projectiles. Flares, flachett, salt, slugs, sabots etc.; in an urban environment it can be very handy so not a bad choice if that is what you go with.

Your mistake is thinking you have to rescue your wife. Far better to train and arm her so she is not some fairy princess waiting for you, her good knight, to save her As fat as weapon choices go for SHTF, I would say a TAVOR for easy in/out of vehicles. And there is always the standby - Saiga 12

Unfortunately I would have to if it was bad. She had a hip replaced earlier this year and still is not too comfortable driving. Also the only gun I can get her to shoot is a tube fed .22. Trust me I want her to learn to shoot and take care of herself but the switch has not yet turned on all the way. She is coming around so hopefully soon I will get here to that point. Plus her company does not allow carry. Also I do not have a TAVOR, so not really an option.

Pretty much standard. If you don't have this, you're just not prepared. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I have that in my Suburban and if I was going to intentionally drive into an area where I expected to draw fire I would have a couple of extra volunteers for gunners.

You need one like Nick Fury has in The Winter Solider.

Now that was an all purpose SUV!

And about the best thing in the movie.

And was that s Skorpion strapped on Bucky's back? Seems like with all the techy weaponry around...he could have something a little more up to date.
