Ok, I am going to do a bigger analysis of this, later. Several things, Mitt even stated these issues. Lets start with "voting blocks." This term is used to describe certain voters with similar aspects, such as race, creed, sex, income, or age. Several of these blocks, the Young vote, the African American vote, the Hispanic vote, and Women voters are the crucial ones which voted for Obama, and against Romney. The GOP's stance on several points harmed the party with these voting blocks. Young vote: Gay marriage, stance on marijauna, Religious Right. War mongering. In the eyes of the younger generation, they see sexual issues very differently than those 35+. In my experience, coming "out of the closet," or even professing the want to get a sex change, would have led to major conflicts, and rage, when I was young. Not so with them. They actively support those who come out with these sexual issues. They act as if it is no big deal. The blocking of marriage rights for gays, and their right to fight for this nation, harmed the GOP here. Marijauna and other "recreational" drugs have a different view in this generation, than with the older ones. We had been told these things are extremely bad, and dangerous, and, particularly the case with marijuana, recreational drugs were "gateway" drugs to worse things. Yet, the younger generation has grown up with these recreational drugs done by their parents, and friends. They do not see the point on being hard against these drugs, and favor making them legal. This is something the present GOP opposes. Religous Right: Most young are not as "up tight" or stress over religous differences. They are more tolerant (and in many cases, IMHO, for the betterment of Christianity) than the older generations, and they do not see the need to push for things like prayer in schools. They see the Religious Right as a negative. And the GOP? Yes, they cater to the Religious Right. War mongering: Correct perception or not, GOP candidates are seen as war hawks by the younger population. The younger population sees little benefit coming from wars, as they have seen the ample coverage of the Iraq and Afghan conflicts. They look at these conflicts as absurd at best, but basically huge waste of lives. And they remember, it was a GOP President pushing for these wars. The African American vote (IMHO, a misnomer, should be American of African desent, as the culture is not African.) This vote, in the hugest form of irony, has been lost by the GOP, the party of Abe Lincoln. How did this happen? The Dems figured out, during the 1960's, the freedom movement would benefit them in the future. The GOP did not respond to the movement as well. And now, in the eyes of this community, the GOP are for the Whites only. A good piece of work by the Dems to go from the anti-rights party to the defender of the African Americans. True, this is not the biggest of the voting blocks, but 12-14% helps in tight elections. Hispanic vote: Hispanics, by most aspects, Deeply religious, supportive of the sanctity of marriage, etc., smacks of a voting block primed for the GOP. But, the GOP has stumbled by always looking like the Anti- Hispanic immigration party. This, plus the viewpoint the GOP, thru the blocking of the Dream Act, and supporting the aspects of "papers please" laws, alienated the Hispanic vote. Again, the GOP reinforced the viewpoint they are the "Whites Only" party. Mitt pointed this out on several occasions, claiming if the GOP loses the Hispanic voting block, they have lost the future elections. Considering the size of, and the speed of which this size is growing, the Hispanic voting block will be crucial in future elections. Women voters: This block is still growing in impact as more women see elections impacting their health, well being, and their family's health and well being. For a politcal party claiming to be for less government intervention, it is surprising how much more governing the GOP wants over women's vaginas. Here, the pandering to the Religous Right has pushed women voters towards the Dems. In addition, the lack of support for the Lilly Ledbetter Act, and equal pay for equal work, damaged the GOP further. This reinforced the view the GOP is for not only Whites, but only White males. Attempting to remove the Planned Parenthood funding also damaged the GOP here. 98%+ of the Planned Parenthood funds have ZERO to do with abortions. Of the less than 2% dealing with the topic, the majority, 75%+, goes to counciling, which typically prevents the abortion. The 98% goes towards women's health, such as cancer screenings, medical treatments, and other health programs to the benefit of women. And ZERO of the federal funding goes to anything abortion related. In the eyes of many female voters, this action, plus additional laws cutting health care for women, is dangerous. Going after Planned Parenthood is a bad politcal move for the GOP. Arguably, going after Big Bird, and NPT, fits here, as it is a family issue, and parents rely on these educational services for their children, an anti-family stance which may have hurt the GOP with women. If you look at the perceptions of the GOP, from the views of these voter blocks, it is no wonder Mitt lost. Add the fact Mitt alienated the likes of Ron Paul supporters (who are a block of active voters, too) in his own party, and yes, Mitt lost.
Anyone who believes anything other than what this man said has their head buried in the sand. Times are changing, like it or not. Only if they'd change enough to give 3rd part candidates a fighting chance. Or better yet, do away with party affiliation altogether.2 points
So let me see f I understand all of this. If Republicans become just like Democrats, we can get some of the Dem's voters, while the conservatives move to third parties. Exactly how is this a winning strategy ? We have to come to a sad realization; America is a "fast food, MTV" society. The Republican party still wants to believe and hold fast to the idea that the same generation that has downloaded and stolen music for 20+ years has integrity and brains to care about issues. The Dems have figured out and accepted the stupidity that our populace is sinking into, and knows how to play it to their advantage. We still think Cronkite and Huntley & Brinkley set a standard for news that remains. Now, it's entertainment news; Colbert, et al. Senator Dianne Feinstein Moves To Ban ALL Assault Rifles, High Capacity Magazines, and Pistol Grips November 7th, 2012 Mac Slavo: The agenda no longer needs to be hidden from public view. With President Obama winning another term and democrats taking control of the Senate, the move to fundamentally change America from within has begun – with a vengeance. We’re all aware of the restrictive gun laws in the State of California which require low capacity magazines for handguns, fixed magazines for “assault†rifles, and a whole lot of running around just to be granted the right to carry a concealed firearm. Now, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), who has championed gun control in her state for decades and co-wrote the original assault weapons ban enacted by the federal government in the 1990′s, wishes to bring even more stringent federal mandates to the land of the free. What is being proposed by Feinstein is the most significant attack on the second amendment in history. It would essentially ban thousands of firearms and require gun owners to turn them over to the Federal government.
I don’t have the minutes of the meeting (yet), but sources tell me California Senator and longtime gun-hater Dianne Feinstein’s legal staff held meetings on Friday with FTB/ATF legal staff to discuss a new “Assault Weapons Ban†Madame Feinstein would be looking to push through Congress if President Obama wins reelection. This same “pretty good intelligence†says the items that would lead to a ban would ban pistol grips and “high-capacity†magazines, eliminate any grandfathering and ban sales of “weapons in possessionâ€. I don’t know about you, but if these things come to pass and I’m “in possession†I’m certainly not selling. In fact, the lack of interest in the idea surprised the California liberal’s legal staffers. Apparently, they believe no logical person could possible disagree with them. … I began receiving the first reports of increases in gun buying by people concerned about tomorrow’s election. Dealers in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Indiana all tell me there hasn’t been a huge number of buyers expressing those concerns, but the numbers were noticeable. Among that group -and the majority of “regular†purchasers- the core driving most of the purchasing seem to be in their mid-to-late 30s. Again, home and personal defense are the most frequently cited reasons for buying. Source: Shooting Wire
At a Congressional budget meeting in September of this year, Feinstein alluded to her desire to reintroduce federal assault weapons ban regulations similar to those she helped cosponsor and pass in 1994 during the Presidency of Bill Clinton:
“Ladies and gentlemen, it is time to say, once again, in legislation, weapons of war do not belong on our streets…†September 5, 2012
It it any wonder that shares of stocks like Smith & Wesson (NASDAQ:SWHC) and Ruger (NYSE:RGR) surged this morningin response to President Obama winning a second term? While the majority of stocks across the world are in the midst of a sell-off and economic conditions indicate the country is in a recession, America’s gun owners aren’t waiting to see what happens next. Senator Feinstein is serious, and despite this most recent report appearing only as a rumor, her comments earlier this year and her actions two decades ago, should leave no question as to where this is headed. They are coming for our guns; plain and simple. This article is brought to you courtesy of Mac Slavo. Buddy, unfortunately you're fighting a tough battle. As a land manager I can say there is no surefire way to stop trespassing besides direct confrontation, and thy can get sketchy. Often trespassers have a sense of ownership regardless of who actually owns the land. An if they don't they have a blatant disregard for the law. Either way, be careful & assertive, but I'd recommend being respectful. These things can escalate to an unnecessary level quickly.1 point

Strick, it doesn't matter WHEN Romney started his pro gun stance. It only matters that he's pro gun now. You hold folks to their current contract, not to one they had with somebody else.
Racism? Yes. It did play a part. (Racism is prefering your race over other races. African Americans, Hispanics, Whites, Asians, etc. all exhibit racist views, but this is a separate topic.) Several did vote for Obama, due to his skin color. Racism also worked the other way, as seen by acts of people voting for Mitt, with slogans like "Put the "white" back into the White House," and other, less civilized, slogans tossed about. In addition, Trump, and other GOP talking heads, and even Mitt, catered to the Birthers, a percieved racist group proclaiming Obama was born in Kenya, even though the evidence shows otherwise (and since he was born 2 years before Kenya existed... um. Yeah.) This perception negatively impacted the GOP, too, as having these slogans on the back of t-shirts, on signs, banners, etc., at several GOP politcal rallies, pushed the perception the GOP was for "whites only." @Currently: I missed the speech. Do you have a link? I would like to hear what he said.
And BTW, I'm not sure that I blame them. Just calling it for what it is. Fact is, the Republicans probably would have won if they hadn't alienated women. Fiscal conservatism isn't going anywhere. The conclusion is then, that the Republican party wants to go after the votes of illegals who can't legally vote in the first place. I'm I the only one whose head it about to explode?1 point

Those thoughts are totally normal. They will continue to persist until you break down and buy one. The good news is as rifles go they're easy enough on the budget that you may still live a long life with some semblance of quality to it.1 point

I agree Samuel Adams was a great founding father, and risked everything (long before 1776) to fight for God given rights, and liberty from tyrannical rule. Sure things are completely different today... or are they? Confiscation of property... not happening here? Kelo vs City of New London? civil forfeiture laws? Sackett vs EPA? No the government is taking out property the same way the British did, by hiding behind the 'law'. Confiscation of firearms? not happening now? Katrina Gun Grab? ATF 'relaxing' due process standard for confiscations? No the government is trying to disarm us, and if Obama appoints 3 new justices in the next 4 years the Heller ruling is likely to be overturned. You are right they are quartering troops in our homes... but as for the government and our wives and children? TSA groping anybody? But, we can go one further... our President has murdered US citizens via executive order without the 'terrorist' even being charged with a crime, let alone found guilty.... His administration claims to be able to use the same legal theory on citizens within the US... Congress passed the NDAA last year authorizing indefinate detentions of US citizens by the military with no rights to an attorney or access to our court systems. The Boston Tea Party was over a 10% tax on tea, we pay that here in TN for every good we purchase. Between local, state, and federal taxes... I'm paying 50+% of my income to the government, and I'm not rich, just a middle income American with a wife and a child. I'm not suggesting anybody take up arms, but we all need to understand that we're way past the point our founding fathers were.
Jay. I understand the point and it is well taken. Some things to consider: Samuel Adams staked this life, liberty, and personal fortune to help found this country. He and his associates succeeded in whupping the the superpower of his day; creating the country that everybody admires, wants to come to, and be a part of for over 200 years. All that happened between 1776 and 1784. Samuel Adams and folks like him handed us the greatest country that had ever existed. For that i am, indeed, thankful. I can accept the argument that Sam would not recognize nor approve of what is goin on (....and, in fact, has gone on in this country since 1861....) since this country's founding. Havin said all that, im not sure that you can compare then with now. Then, the British were running rough shod over the populace, taking their arms, confiscating their property, quartering troops in their houses, and tellin them they better like it or else. No one is doin that today. I will grant that government in some places is encroaching on personal liberty and picking the pockets of the producers in this country. What happened in British colonial times is a far cry from what is goin on in this country today. No one is comming to your door to kick your door down, take your stuff, or ravish your wife while wearing the uniform of the united states. No one has come to take your brothers and sisters away and impress them into military service (...in the last few years, anyway....). No one is comming to disarm you. I will grant that they would like to; but i doubt they will. To me, at least, you simply cant compare what happened then with what is happening now. It aint the same thing. We have had thoroughout the history of this country crooks, oppressors, and pickpockets in high political office. I predict that that situation will continue. It always has. It is, sadly, the nature of things. As i see things, its our job to try to fix this problem thru the vote. This country has morphed into an empire that has the tendency to go around the globe and meddle in affairs it should never be involved in; and has been doin so ever since WW1. We have, in fact, become what Sam Adams and the founding fathers abhored. We are now citizens of the american empire. We are reaping the harvest of imposing our national will on others. Our country as it has been constituted and governed over the last hundred or so years looks nothin like i believe it was envisioned by the founding fathers. It may well be that we implode due to our own differences and selfishness. In the mean time, i think we should try to fix what we can. That fix has got to start by determining what is and is not the responsibility of government toward its citizens, its business, its national neighbors, and the individual states making up the union. What is right. What is wrong. The list goes on and on. The fact is that there is no 'taking of quotes" out of context, because the context aint the same. We should, indeed, have serrious discussions as to how to fix these great problems. That is what we are doin here. leroy
1 point

I think if someone is convicted of a felony and are going to permanently lose all of their rights and drastically decrease their ability to get a good job by 100%+ for the rest of their lives we should just have a spare room in the back of the court house where you put a slug through their head the instance they are convicted. While I dont think all felons should just be running around with guns I do think you should be able to regain your rights after say 7-10 years of sentencing after a review from the courts(Non Violent felons). Hell there is no telling how many people on this forum that have committed some type of crime throughout there life that had they been caught would have ended up with a felony conviction or loss of gun rights at a minimum, only difference between them and the criminal is the criminal got caught imo.1 point

There are pro 2A democrats and anti 2A republicans. BUT, the Democratic party is anti 2A. As a party, it's their goal to destroy it. It's the Republican party's goal to preserve it. It shouldn't be a surprise that folks on a gun board would bash the hell out of the one group that's trying to destroy something that's very important to all of us. The more they set out to attack us, the more of a right winger I become. I just don't see how anybody with a serious passion for firearms could defend the Democratic party. Gun owners are the ones that were attacked and put on the defense. If somebody steals from me, they're not allowed in my house. I have a LOT of liberal friends. They're not out to take away my guns, and I'm not out to take away whatever they like. With that said, as long as the Democratic party is coming after me, they are my enemy. Please forgive me for my intolerance. BTW... Romney lost for a number of reasons. The party chased off women and hispanics. And, maybe the most important element... BHO may be a crappy president, but his marketing/campaign folks are the best. Their strategy was pretty flawless, again.1 point
Romney lost because the demographics and opinion on issues of those demographics are changing. BHO got big majority vote of women, blacks, Hispanics, and gays. The only major demographic Mitt won was white men, but only 48% of all white voters. Hispanics will be at least one third of US population by 2050. The majority are Christian (mostly Catholic to boot), family oriented, and hard workers. That sounds like a Republican base -- so when the GOP can't win that demographic, the party needs to do some real soul searching as to what it is really all about. - OS
You left out blacks. If you leave out the part of the black community that simply doesn't care about anything, the majority of blacks are very conservative in their thinking. As was said on Rush's show yesterday the problem with the republican party is that most blacks view it as a party of racist. On any given day, that segment of the community can come on here and at least one idiot will verify that opinion. It's a matter of being guilty by association. It's not right, but it occurs. It's the same way that some here can't bring their mind to believe that there are honest, hard working, patriotic blacks. As someone said earlier, it's about perception.1 point
And I buy my guns and ammo from businesses that exist to support the firearms community and which are generally, albeit not always, owned and staffed by firearm enthusiasts like myself because I care a more that those business continue to exist a lot more than I care if WalMart exists.
And how much more are you willing to spend to support those businesses? 20%, 33% or even a 50% mark up? And this is during normal times, not the "scary" times. I have meet more unscrupulous dealers than I have met unscrupulous Walmart employees or managers. When we had our scare 4 years, ago and with another probably coming, Walmart was about the only place I could find ammo that wasn't being gouged. The guns they sell are the same quality as any other dealer gets. They order their guns through a distributor and there is no such thing as Walmart specific guns (another lie by dealers). The distributor fills their order just like your favorite storefront. I watched dealers with storefronts come in and buy every bit of .22 ammo at Walmart for $15 a brick. And as the customers were getting upset the dealers would tell the customers to come to XXXXXXX gunshop to buy this ammo for $30 a brick. I seen it several times by the same dealer. That is why Walmart started their six box maximum purchase, to protect the customers from the dealers who were gouging us. What other company would do that? We all forget all too soon how some of these dealers feed us fear monger stories to convince we need to buy ammo at 3x the cost. These are the same dealers who mark guns way up then try to fear customers into buying them. I remember and they are the ones who will never see a red dime of mine. I am all for capitalism but I say if they want to mark things up beyond what the market will bear don't gripe and complain about how no one wants to buy from you. And don't try to feed me the BS line that you only make a dollar on every single sale. I support my local dealers as well but I will not pay a premium to be able to say I have. If they have something for sale for what I feel is fair I will buy it. And what may be fair to me may not be to someone else. What is fair is a personal choice but as I said I will not pay a premium to say I have. I bet this infuriates those honest dealers trying to making a living and do right by their cusomers. We have great ones on here as sponsors and they have great prices. We also have great dealers that have store fronts just not all of them. Bill's Outpost in the Knoxville area is a great place to deal with. Gunny's in Maryville, not so much anymore. Predator Custom shop is another honest dealer. There are going to be good ones and bad ones but I rarely forget those who burned me once. Dolomite1 point

Atlas Shrugs. This all is very close to a classic Shopkeepers General Strike.1 point

she can move all she wants to. Banning guns is not a way for the asshats in congress to get re-upped. I think they like their cushy lifestyle more than they fear guns. And i am so sick of this gloom and doom #### spewed by people here I about can't stand it any longer. How do some of you get through the day? Just go kill yourself already.1 point

If you are going to go with a shotgun for home defense, Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 in 20ga would be my recommendation. Both are available in a HD setup in the $400+/- range, less if you can find one used.1 point
