1. BE WARNED: SCAMMERS ARE ACTIVELY WORKING AGAINST THE GUN COMMUNITY ON TGO AND OTHER INTERNET FORUMS IN THE BUY/SELL/TRADE AREAS. Folks, lately we have seen a significant uptick in scam attempts that go like this: You post an ad for an item for sale or wanted. A scammer contacts you about the item you are selling or looking for and offers to put you in contact with a friend or relative in Texas or some other state. Throughout the whole thing, your Spidey Sense is tingling and telling you it seems suspicious... because it is! We strongly recommend that you stick to dealing with local Tennessee residents only and that you use forms of payment that are guaranteed, secured, and cannot be retracted once the sale completes. For example, you don't want to sell someone something via Venmo or PayPal, only to have them reverse the charge later after they have possession of what you were selling. TGO remains a great place to buy and sell privately, but please be cautious and smart. And please do not hesitate to report anything suspicious to us! On behalf of myself, @MacGyver and the moderating team - thanks and be safe.

 2. I tried eating gar last year and now it's the main fish I try to catch. The skin is hard as plastic and you need tin-snips to cut it open. After you get it open there are 2 long boneless loins on each side of the back. No need to gut it or skin it. The meat is odorless and firm like chicken. It's like alligator and I love it !!! This Gar was 3 feet long and both loins were around 15 inches long and nice and thick.

 3. I’m cheap and would probably change it myself before I paid a quick change place $90. But, from a materials science perspective, the modern synthetics do perform better by every measurable standard. If you’ve got a car that calls for 5W-30, I’d probably stick with whatever I’ve been using. For a lot of new cars, they’re engineered to use synthetics - and that’s literally your only choice. I bought a Toyota truck not too long ago that uses 0w-20. It’s literally about the consistency of a bottle of water. There’s not a conventional equivalent for that stuff.

 5. I recently got the dealership to show me the 0w-20 after they did my oil change. Whatever kind of filter they're using must be doing it's job - because after 10k miles the oil didn't really look any different than it did when they put it in.

 8. Many vehicles in the last two decades were built to use synthetic oil. I have a 98 Trans Am and an 18 Buick Regal TourX and both spec synthetic oil and premium fuel. Synthetic is great, it does not break down as quickly and additives don't burn off. Also, you can get 0W synthetic, not possible with mineral oils. Another benefit is they clean better and leave the dirt in the filter better. The molecules are smaller and get into smaller imperfections in the metals. Syn also cools better because of this. BUT, if you have been using conventional oil for more than 30K miles I would recommend not changing. conventional will leave a build up around seals and gaskets pushing the seal out. introducing syn will clean the gunk out and the smaller molecules will make their way onto you garage floor, driveway, street, and everywhere else outside of your engine that you don't want your $6+ per quart oil to go. LASTLY, synthetic is better for our environment. Randall53 thought HE was long winded. LMAO

 14. Dark oil doesn't necessarily mean its ability to lubricate the engine has been degraded. It means its doing its job and picking up contaminants.

 16. This and what @MacGyver said are why you should use synthetic if you're letting the vehicle's computer tell you when to change the oil. The computer algorithm is based on the performance of the OEM oil, which is likely synthetic. If you're changing oil on the traditional fixed mileage number, 5000 or less, then conventional oil is fine assuming the car isn't turbocharged. Turbo cars are MUCH harder on oil. They need full synthetic and/or frequent oil changes. And like @runco, I DIY oil changes. Its not hard and it's a good opportunity to inspect the underside of the car. Ive found several minor issues that way that could have become bigger problems later on. I also know a few guys who've worked at quick oil change places and what they tell me makes me avoid them whenever possible.

 20. Synthetics are good if you're in the habit of going way over the regular oil change intervals. I'm talking double or triple the recommended miles. Synthetics do hold up longer. in fact, longer oil change intervals is one of the synthetics biggest selling points. However, if you keep even close to the recommended mileage, plain old cheap petroleum oils work fine. The truth is that its not the oil that breaks down. Its the detergents and additives that don't last and require changing regularly. I worked in fleets my whole career. We specified the oil weights, 5W30 for gas burners and 15W40 for diesels, but that was all. Otherwise we bought the cheapest bulk oil the distributor had at the time. Used the same oil in everything from lawn mowers to fire and garbage trucks to large earth movers. We also went 4000 miles between changes rather than the recommended 3000 most makers suggest. Never had a single oil related problem. And that was with some drivers who often didn't pay attention and sometimes let services slip for 8000 to 12000 miles. BTW: your local quick change place uses the same cheap bulk oil we did. They may have a specific brand that's on the sign outside. But its all pretty much the same. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. Its good oil. Its just the cheapest stuff the distributor sells. They push the synthetic stuff for two reasons. One: its more expensive and makes them more money. Two: they realize that much of their clientele aren't real good at making regular scheduled oil changes. Some go years between oil changes. Another point you need to understand is that the quick change places don't make much profit on oil changes. That's just the hook to get you in the door. The real money is in all the extra services they can talk you in to buying. These guys aren't mechanics, they're salesmen.

 21. Honestly, when we’re catching fish - I’m just thrilled to be catching fish. We’ve had as much fun seeing what we pull up on a Sabikii rig as we do pulling in giant bull reds. My youngest and I have had a contest for the last few years when we fish in the surf to see who can catch the smallest fish within 5 feet of the shoreline. We use tiny tiny hooks and have caught some no larger than the nail on your little finger. It’s a blast. Gotta have a lot of them to make a taco though.

 22. I've had several cheap ones and no expensive ones. The cheap ones have worked fine for me. I've had 5,7,8, and 12 foot nets. The smaller ones are much easier to throw for me. Interesting things I've caught - 4 pound largemouth - about 20 tilapia in a single cast at GSP. - about 10 white bass in a cast. Honestly, if I'm on bait, I have as much fun with a cast net as I do catching big fish.

 23. The local Honda dealer has started trying to pull that scam. My wife went in for an oil change and even though her’s is an older model Accord, it doesn’t have nearly the number of miles where they USED to start saying to go synthetic. I told them to use regular oil and quit screwing around.

 26. TGO has unfortunately, from time to time, been visited by those who lack morals and ethics and would like to take advantage of the good graces and trusting nature of our fine members. This activity almost always seems to increase when social conditions are turbulent, especially if the turbulence is centered around the ability to find and buy guns or ammo. Lately we have had to boot a few people who were exhibiting suspicious behavior. We want you to be aware of this fact and to be sure to check a person's status on TGO before you commit to doing business with them as either the seller or the buyer. This is especially true if the other person encourages you to take communication with them "off the forum" and to email or some sort of instant messaging service. Before you buy or sell: Look to see whether they have have an active account or if they've been banned since you started talking to them. If you are going to meet to conduct business, do it during daylight hours and in a heavily trafficked, very public, neutral meeting place. Don't invite people to your home. Don't agree to meet people at theirs. MOST police and sheriff's stations have space at their parking lot where you can meet for selling and buying with strangers. Other good places are parking lots of busy business and in sight of their security cameras. Trust your gut instincts whether just when communicating online or meeting in person. If something feels "off" or "weird" - trust your gut. Feel free to involve me, @MacGyver, @Chucktshoes or one of the other moderators in a private conversation with the other party, or just contact us off to the side if you have concerns. Some of the suspicious activity that we've seen includes: People answering a Want To Buy ad claiming to have what you want, or that they know a friend or family member who does, and offering to broker an exchange between you and them. When it is fraudulent, this sort of thing often quickly becomes ridiculously complex and harder than it should be to do a simple transaction. Your warning senses should start tingling. We insist that people never list an item for sale for a friend on TGO for a reason. First Person is simpler, easier and often safer. People asking if you will ship a gun to them out of state or if you require proof of residency. Shipping a gun out of state always requires that you send it to an FFL in that state. An in-person buyer has to be a resident of your state. Again, heed your warning senses. People asking you to send money to them via PayPal "Friends and Family". Remember, first of all PayPal doesn't allow you to pay for guns and certain other things with their service. If you do and you get hosed on a deal, you may have no protection with PayPal. Second, sending money via Friends and Family saves the recipient a measly 3% charge but it also means you get zero protection via PayPal if the other person hoses you. Strangers insisting that they meet you after dark, or at a remote location, or at your house or theirs. This is a big NO. Don't do this. People asking if they can send a friend to pick up a gun from you instead of meeting you themselves. This is also a big NO. It can quickly become an illegal "straw purchase". Again, trust your gut instincts. You have them for a reason. It's safer to heed them and risk offending a person than it is to ignore them and end up the victim of a scam or worse. And always, always contact me, @MacGyver, @Chucktshoes or another moderator if you are concerned and just want a second opinion. We're glad to help. Stay safe out there!

 27.
The way the rule is makes me want to make all future purchases "other" rather than rifle. ....
If FFL marks a lower as "rifle", he is not following BATF instructions on the 4473 itself. Says even if it's a receiver that can only be made into a rifle, it's not to be checked as "long gun". As we were kicking around at the gunshow, one of the quirks of this is let's say you are selling a used lower. The buyer has no idea what the thing was originally configured as, beyond the seller's word. Further, what if you are selling it, but actually even transferring it through an FFL. According to the instructions on FFL, it's to be transferred as "other firearm", period. Even though according to the law, (1) if it were originally sold as a complete rifle, it would be illegal to make it into a pistol, or (2) same if the original owner had originally bought it as only a lower, and made a rifle with it before anything else. Difference there though is that should push come to shove, (1) could be verified, but (2) couldn't be, whether re-sold through FFL or privately. - OS
