What's the rationale for a truck/car long gun?

I started keeping a cheap AK in the truck after that incident up in New York with 100+ crotch rocket riders attacking that family in the SUV on the interstate. I can't think of too many circumstances where I'd need a rifle, but I know if one comes up I won't be wishing I had one. Would I trust a cheap AK with my life? Of course. I've handled and fired hundreds of AKs in my time. I haven't used one yet that didn't go bang every time.

A carbine in the truck to me is just the next logical step in getting me home. My first thought is in most recent times the BLM protestors blocking roadways. Granted blocking a road alone is not a cause for pulling the trigger, but what if you run into that amount of attackers armed? Or just simply violent? I like 90 rifle rounds over 30 pistol from my Glock 19 in that scenario. If you drive a vehicle with a fold up rear seat, this is something I saw that seems like a very legitimate way of mounting one.

Not to be curt, but how exactly would a rifle in the trunk help in that scenario? You would have been swarmed when you parked and tried to make it to your trunk.

I understand the desire to have a long gun on hand but so far the scenarios I'm hearing just don't seem to be practical. Again, more power to you guys if you feel a rifle is good peace of mind. I just don't want to risk an AR getting stolen from my vehicle. Edited by Erik88

I haven't owned a car in over a decade.

I LOVE this idea, something I never thought of. And that looks nearly identical to my back seat in my truck.

Lol, I have an extended cab sierra and thought that's what that was, looking closer, that looks like a Hummer H2. Very similar back seat though.

Meh, clean cars are over rated.

That's a crew cab Silverado. I said it wasn't mine, I didn't say I don't have one like it [emoji6]

Well, I can't say I could rule out and H2, I can just say the seat layout and brackets are identical to mine

It's all GM so it very well could be I know my extended cab and my dads old crew cab Duramax were the same as those in the pic.

Several reasons I suppose, and a couple good ones already listed here. The one I haven't seen listed yet is for a "get home gun." There was quiet a good thread on this a while back.

In societal collapse/shtf scenario if you have to abandon your car or truck because of traffic gridlock, would you want just a pistol to navigate populated areas with? Or would you rather have a long gun to keep you company on the way to your safe place?

With the prices on components for building AR's these days, one could build a complete barebones AR for around $400. I'm not rolling in money, but if I put $400 in a trunk gun and my car/trunk gun was stolen 1. my insurance would cover it, and 2. I wouldn't be broken up about it. Just replace it at my earliest convenience.

Just my line of thinking. But the other reason already given that was my second answer to your question was "better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it."

An ak underfolder is the way to go.

I always thought a truck gun was a firearm you did not worry about.  If it got a little beat up from bouncing around who cared?

I am not quite ready to always keep a rifle with me just yet.  Road trips I do but the daily grind not so much.
