  1. I keep reading comments on their Facebook posts from pro-freedom Colorado residents who feel "helpless" and ignored by the elected representatives, stating that they try to call their reps and are told that they can't leave messages, or email and fax and received canned responses thanking them for their concern.  There, like most places, the people are being ignored and the politicrats are doing exactly whatever the hell they want to do and continue down the road of passing laws that people don't want.   So my question is... what does that leave?  When the vermin that infect our government systems refuse to do the bidding of the people who elected them and put them there, what now?  Sure you can vote them out of office at the end of their term, but how much damage can they do in the meantime?  Once freedoms are stripped away it's almost impossible to restore them.   I hate to be that guy, but I'm seriosuly starting to wonder when folks are going to hit their limit and start voting with deeds instead of words.  There are already posts on Magpul's FB page from people who say they are 5th (and longer) generation Coloradans who refuse to tuck their tails and flee to another state but desire to stand and fight for their freedoms.  Things really could get interesting within our generation.

  5. I was talking with d3vo today at lunch and I think I figured out what missing that I don't like about this season and what I didn't like about much of season 2: Fear of the zombies. There isn't any in most episodes. Season 1 was full of "Oh crap!" moments where you just knew someone was gonna get eaten. Season 2 was 3 weeks of walking around in the woods looking for zombie-Sophie, followed by the rest of the season sitting more or less safe at the farm. We had the one episode with Rick and Shane on a run to where the school bus was that had some good "are they gonna make it?" moments, and of course the last episode was full of fear for the characters.   This season started strong while clearing the prison, and having their "stalker" drawing zombies in on them. Since then they're sitting tight in their safe cell block. Woodbury/TheGuv is a threat, sure, but I can get that human vs human threat on lots of shows. Even during "Clear" the Z's are sparse and eaily trapped or avoided. This is the show where the zombies should be the things to fear. With the safety of the fences and bars plus the ease of killing them with a pocket knife, they've been reduced to an irritant. The fact that Woodbury is using them for sport further reduces the fear factor.   When I see Z's showing up now, I wonder what kind of gory explosions the FX guys are going to pull off when the Z is dispatched. I used to wonder which human was going to die.

  8. This is probably old news for most, but if it saves one person some $$$...   If you are approaching the speedway from Johnson City, take great care thru the fiefdom of Bluff City/Piney Flats.  Speed limit drops to 45, and BC has made well over $1.5 million in the last few years off of a strategically-placed speed camera monitoring both sides of 11E.  They're located about a quarter-mile or so past the Industrial Park intersection (red light) if Bristol-bound, and just past Pardners BBQ if JC-bound.  Watch for the small warning signs, and don't feed the trolls...

  9. I think it's an excellent idea.  More competition in the market is always a good thing.  Liquor store owners certainly aren't happy about it as they're likely to lose their cheap wine business to the grocery stores.  But liquor stores manage to survive in plenty of other states where wine is sold in grocery stores.

  10. I am sorry it's taken me this long to respond to the thread but I wanted to offer that I'll be sure to keep your grandfather and your family in my prayers.  While the outcome of these few days may not be what you desire, I cannot help but notice an underlying statement in what has transpired and hope that you will find some encouragement in it as you face the uncertainties ahead:   All too often we rely on the words of doctors as being final and authoritarian.  When they deliver bad news, we tend to take it at face value and sometimes resign ourselves to "the worst".  Your grandfather's prognosis was that he would only be with you for a few more hours and that was several days ago.  The fact that he persists with you is proof that the human spirit is an indomitable thing and that doctors do not always have the last word.  God does.   Those are two incredibly powerful and extremely valuable lessons to take away from this.  It's funny how sometimes the people we have looked up to our entire lives take a bit longer to stay with us and teach us a few more things before they finally lay down their burdens and embrace the eternal rewards of a life well lived.   Hang in there.

  11. THe science is Newton's third law of motion.  For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.  It's what tells us that hollywood is BS.  When someone shoots someone and it blows them off their feet???  For that to happen the recoil would be equal to that.  I know nothing of physics but I would say the reason you felt such an impact is the equal amount of force being focused into such a small area.  ...but what do I know.

This is simply an opportunistic platform to seek prominence/ elected office. If it came out that the DNC power brokers offered him backing if he hopped on board the anti-2A train I would be less shocked than if there was a video of Obama out there a la EFAD.

  16. This weekend I took a rifle class with Randy Harris (Cruel Hand Luke) down in Tunica, MS.  Randy is, in addition to being a pretty cool dude and not someone upon whom I would want to attempt a criminal act, a highly qualified instructor full of real-world, street-practical knowledge.  I've seen this in his posts here on TGO over the years, and that is what attracted me to his classes.  He did not disappoint in real life.  In short, I highly recommend seeking training from him. I truly think you'll come away with more tools to put in your box.   Because (I suspect) of current market conditions, we did not shoot a whole lot of ammo.  I shot maybe 400 rounds rifle and 25 pistol.  And this was a two-day class.  I was fine with this and it's even something Randy and I had talked about beforehand.  You don't need to shoot through a lot of rounds to learn how to run your weapon.   Saturday we worked on transitions to pistol, shooting on the move to both right and left, and magazine changes.  One drill we worked was standing close to the target, maybe 7 yards, and acquiring a nice even sight picture, then speeding it up by just looking over the top of the sight or optic.  We did this standing still then on the move.  I learned a lot by doing this moving to the left, and how to move my hands on the weapon to switch shoulders.   Sunday we continued shooting/moving drills, then worked into using cover and concluded with some great team drills incorporating communication and covering fire.    The weather was a challenge.  It was very windy both days and we kept having issues with the targets being blown down or just blown away.  Sunday was perfect Scottish golfing weather, about a 20-mph wind, steady rain, and temps in the 50's (which felt lower with the wind and rain).  Aside from the target issues, I liked the weather because of the difficulties it presented.    I kept my gear pretty simple and learned that what I have works pretty well.  Just a battle belt with a couple each pistol and rifle mags.  Rifle is in an MS3 sling which I really like.  One thing I do need is a dump pouch to put empty mags.  We discussed the realistic use of a rifle for civilian use.  Basically it's going to be either home defense or a short-term, regional event that might disrupt power, law and order, and the generally thin veneer we call society.  In a situation like that you might want to get in the habit of retaining your mags.  I always thought I could use my pockets but that doesn't work too well under stress I found out.  So I'll be looking for a dump pouch.   I got a lot out of this class, especially using cover, transitioning shoulders and moving to the left.  A lot that I can now work through on my own. Randy has great personality for teaching, very real, not wooden, and very knowledgeable and organized.  He puts things in a real-world, civilian perspective.    Go train with him, you won't be disappointed.

  17. This afternoon I received a frantic call from my grandmother saying that my grandfather was 'dead' in his bedroom floor.  Well, he wasn't.. I arrived prior to the EMTs and he was unconscious but still alive.  That was the high point of the day..   We've known for a while he had an 'inoperable' pulmonary aneurysm. Well, it burst.. He got out of surgery less than an hour ago. It didn't go well. We're being told he has 12-24 hours left to be with us.   He's a good man and practically raised me for the majority of my childhood. If any of y'all are the praying type, send one up for us if you don't mind!

  26. I have a Pathfinder (V6, 4x4) which is very similar mechanically and otherwise.  It had around 15k on it when I purchased it, now has 71k.  The radio of all things broke which you just don't expect on any newer vehicle.  My wife likes the fact that we upgraded to a unit with a plug in for an I-Pod anyway.  Otherwise, it has been completely trouble free.   I prefer to pay cash for cars and keep them a while.  I am definitely happy enough with the Pathfinder that I plan on putting lots of miles on it.  With a 2-year-old, a 4-year-old, and a hyperactive 70 lb dog, a more expensive vehicle would only make me more likely to get irritated with every small scratch etc...

  27.   There's a lot going on in your example.  The magnitude of acceleration and the rate of change of acceleration (called the jerk) are involved.  There's a threshold beyond which a simple acceleration applied to an object becomes an impact.  Impact gets a little deeper and involves conservation of momentum, coefficient of restitution (elastic & plastic collisions), and impulse (a vector quantity).  You've also got to consider the mechanical properties of the block  and hammer (compressive strength, fracture toughness).  It gets busy.  This illustrates why engineering homework problems are so simple, and in turn why real engineering problems (that may seem simple) can be quite complex.

  29. Ticked off?  That's crazy talk.   Don't take what Dolo said too literally... it isn't an exact science due to all the things you mentioned such as the weapon's buffering system, weight of the firearm and so forth.  But, if what you described could be recreated I don't see it being much different than felt recoil.  Once the bullet terminates in the chamber of the receiving weapon, all that energy is going to be transferred to that weapon before it is transferred to the shoulder of the firer, same as the firearm that it left.

  33. I mailed this letter today to Chis Cox of the NRA:   Mr. Cox,   As an NRA Member from Tennessee, your home state, I am writing to express my disappointment in NRA support in Tennessee regarding legislation in this state this year.   House bill 118 and Senate bill 142 were reported to be employee parking lot protection bills.  Close examination will show them to be a major sham. Only a SMALL number of permit holders will benefit from this legislation while big business and employers are the big winners.    Last year the NRA fought HARD to pass the Safe Commute bill.  That legislation was good.  The measure was killed by House and Senate leadership inappropriately by violating the rules of The General Assembly.  In the aftermath, the NRA then partnered with others by providing major support in defeating Debra Maggart, a major player in the defeat of the bill, in her bid for re-election to the Tennessee House.   This year represented a major about-face by the NRA in Tennessee.  Few people even know who the NRA representative is for Tennessee this year.  My attempt to contact the NRA ILA to find out who this person is and to express my opposition to these bills were met with stone walling.   It was only through the office of the House sponsor of HB118, that I even found out that the NRA actually supported this legislation and MAY have been party to the negotiations.  No one I know who are NRA members recall ever receiving any alerts about these bills.  This makes it appear that the NRA wanted to keep its support quiet.   This is BAD legislation.  It is full of pit-falls and traps for the permit holder.  The Tennessee Firearms Association has outlined the problems with these bills in detail repeatedly to its members AND to members of The Tennessee General Assembly.    Attempts to work with Senate leader and Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey and House Speaker Beth Harwell have been met with TOTAL rejection, saying that these bills WILL pass with NO amendments.  They also have more than once indicated that this legislation IS supported by the NRA.   I have worked HARD for MANY years to get parking lot legislation passed in Tennessee.  I have been interviewed by local TV AND by your on-line host via phone.  I worked with Darren LaSorte last year to pass this.  I work for an employer who bans my ability to safely commute.  I KNOW the importance of this as well or better than anybody.  Yet nobody I know is aware of any attempts by the NRA to work with anybody at the state level on this bill THIS YEAR.    As a result, we have a BAD BILL that has passed both the House and Senate and will likely be signed by Governor Haslam.  The old adage that SOME progress is better than NO progress is WRONG when applied to this bill.   Problems, (and I brought these to the attention of the person I spoke with at NRA ILA) with this bill;   1) While it DOES remove the criminal aspect of carrying on a posted property, it DOES NOT require an employer to allow a permit holder to keep a legal firearm in their private vehicle.  AND the criminal aspect is only in regards to the Tennessee Code that speaks to the posting requirement.  You will not be prosecuted under THAT code.  HOWEVER you can STILL be prosecuted for CRIMINAL TRESPASS AND you can still be FIRED.   2) The bill specifically states "the permit holders privately owned vehicle".  This would have been an easy fix but again, the "no amendments" attitude was upheld.  What if MY vehicle is in the shop for repairs and I am driving a rental or loaner?  What if I carpool?  What if I lease a vehicle?  What if I borrow my wife’s car?    3) The bill only provides protection from "ordinary observation".  What defines "ordinary observation"?  If I am in the process of removing the firearm from my holster and placing it in the glove box and it is seen via a surveillance camera on a pole that can look down into my car, is this protected?   These are just a FEW of the problems with this bill that the sponsors refused to discuss or address.  This also shows why before the NRA endorses or works on legislation in a given state, they should contact state based groups who are closer to the situation and in a better position to know what is needed.

  34. Not me. Wouldn't matter much one way or the other. From what I've observed there has been race related bias on both sides of this issue from the start. My feeling is the incident was instigated by Z, as it has always been. However, I agree that if the only evidence the prosecution has is the physical evidence from the scene then Z will walk as a free man using the self defense argument. I still am trying to figure how SYG ever made it into the argument at the start of all this. I don't recall Z's lawyers ever suggesting they would use it and it wouldn't apply if Z's story was that Martin had him pinned. You can't make the choice to "stand your ground" if escape isn't an option. We'll see; I'm expecting some revealing evidence to come out when this goes to trial.

  39. I'm going to disagree.  In 2007, I took an AK round to the rear ESAPI, lower right quadrant and it knocked me to me knees.  It did not penetrate the ESAPI but deformed the rear and messed up the soft armor.  I had a very ugly fist sized bruise for weeks and for a few days, it hurt to breathe deep.   Is there some kind of science that I'm missing behind your statement?  Because that shit definitely hurt me more than firing a weapon.

  40.   Exactly right. Can put any number of firearms on one 4473, but when it is submitted, it is closed out.   If two or more handguns are purchased at same time (or within 5 consecutive business days), FFL must file an additional form 3310, but buyer has no input into that and generally doesn't even know about it.   - OS

  41.   Actually, no. There ARE people dedicated to put in the time just to screw with folks for practicing a religion.  And no, it would be incorrect to assume the university, especially Vanderbilt University, would take appropriate action to address issues such as that.   It is possible, however, that Vanderbilt Catholic, one of the larger groups exiled by Vanderbilt, came out of all of this smelling like a rose. They got bounced from Vanderbilt Campus proper, and the Bishop of Nashville gave them Frassati House that is right behind the Cathedral of the Incarnation. (Frassati house is a beautiful old home that also once served as a Vanderbilt fraternity house and now is Catholic Church property)   Frassati House shares a lot line with Vanderbilt, and is in a higher traffic, better place than it ever was when it was on Vanderbilt Campus. They've been re-named University Catholic to not infringe on the august Vandy name, and they serve as many or more students because they also have Belmont and other students using the facility.   The Law of Unintended Consequences at work. Score one for the good guys.     They are at:   2004 Terrace Place, Nashville, TN  37203 Phone: 615.322.0104 http://universitycatholic.org

  43. There are a lot of hunters and recreational shooters that go along with some of the restrictions true anti-gunners are proposing, like private back checks and mag caps. They say they support the second amendment, but I believe it's more that they are not against it. Folks like the Giffords affirm that the people have a right to keep and bear arms, but they stumble over the "shall not be infringed" part. What if you were to ask them if the same restrictions they want to place upon our 2A rights would carry over to 1A? How about allowing free speech, but you're limited to no more than 10 minutes? What if all civil rights activists were required to undergo a background check before they could get a permit to march in protest or stand on a corner with a sign? Could a person in need of legal counsel hire someone who once served in the JAG Corps or would he be too much of a "military style" lawyer? I mean, where do we draw the line on their favorite rights?

  46. Winchester and Federal .22 ammo have been showing up relatively frequently on gunbot.  Usually from $.04-.06 per round.  When you see it, grab it as it sells out quickly.  As supplies build up, you will start seeing it in stores again.    As for getting a .22 pistol, go for it!  If you see what you want at a decent price, get it.  Ammo may be hard to find right now, but nobody is talking about restricting .22 ammo, so it will be least affected by whatever might happen in the future.  the pistol you want MAY be affected by legislation, so you should probably move sooner rather than later.

  47. I would not approach them with an exposed weapon. Too easy for things to escalate or for them to say you pointed at them. Even on your own property it is aggravated assault if you point a firearm at them unless you have justification and someone sitting at the end of your drive isn't.
