  3.   In a vacuum. When a thug gets shot, somebody, somewhere, always says, "he was a good boy". Based on all we have seen about Trayvon, outside of Crump's marketing campaign, is that he was an aspiring thug. It has some significance in the case because of all the original misleading media crap.   Sure, he could have been buying iced tea (actually, it wasn't) and skittles for a nice evening at home. Let's don't ignore the fact that an evening with the Cleavers didn't quite fit his character.

  8. Between my TGO friends and my family and friends from my homeland, y'all are about to give me a complex. One side thinks I'm too liberal because of my views on gays and abortion, and the other side thinks I'm too conservative because of my views on guns, welfare, immigration and healthcare.  :slapfight:

  9. The "innocent kid portrayal" was created by the media when they ran those pics of a 6 yr old Martin and the innocuous trip to the store for tea and candy. The "evil gunslinging mall cop portrayal" included the mug shots of Zimmerman and a doctored 911 tape making it sound like he singled-out lil Trayvon because he was black. This helped get this case spiralling into deep waters, as is evident by the perpetually offended Sharpton and his ilk swooping in to play the race card. Now, it seems the case will be forever tainted as a white on black hate crime, even if it wasn't. If the DA hadn't pressed charges, there'd have been riots. If a jury acquits Z or only gives him a slap on wrist, there'll be riots. Every piece of evidence presented to contradict the "innocent kid portrayal" is attacked as an irrelevant character assassination. I found all the evidence about burglary tools, stolen jewelry, handgun ownership by a minor, drug usage, and general displays of thug-like behavior much more pertinent than dropped charges of domestic violence and resisting arrest. This evidence along with the real 911 tape, witness accounts, and the map of the neighborhood made the idea that TM doubled-back to attack GZ much easier to believe than GZ running TM down to assault/confront him. That's just where my stance came from, but clearly others disagree and that's cool. This is actually another piece of that evidence that got me wondering if TM was an innocent kid from the start. I can't prove it, but I'd bet you money he was headed home to mix up some "Drank"/"Lean" (Watermelon flavored iced tea + Skittles + Robitussin http://therealrevo.com/blog/?p=75112). According to this link, it's very popular in southern rap culture. Just read about the 4 levels or plateaus it creates. Like I said, I may be wrong, but based on his past, it's easier to believe than "lil Trayvon walked to the store one night in the rain, just to get candy and tea and was murdered by a white man with a chip on his shoulder".

  10. Absolutely nothing - it's just a little humor.   It also serves as a reminder that talking about the subject of this thread is just as useful as arguing about the "best" caliber for a defensive handgun, whether it should be a Glock or a 1911, whether one should carry open or concealed or any other of a hosts of subjects that have been both beaten to death and to which there really is no "one right answer".

  11.       I think it will be hard to get 12 people to agree on a verdict in this case. I think it will be a hung jury and the drama will start again as the state decides if it will retry the case or not.

  18. The wife and I were in Chattown visiting my folks for the weekend. We managed to get sunday afternoon free and my wife suggested we visit Chickamauga Battlefield. I thought that was a fitting destination for the Memorial Day weekend. :usa: Having grown up in Chattanooga, I've been there a bunch. But that was a long time ago before I had much interest in such historical things. Unfortunately we didn't have but a few hours to look around. There's a ton of stuff there so we tried to hit the high points. As luck would have it, we arrived just in time for the last cannon demonstration of the day. They fired the 12lb'er twice. Love the enthusiasm in the command to FIRE! Love the echo reverberating across the open fields. They told us this is about 50% of the typical amount of powder used to fire these. Cannons frickin ROCK! http://youtu.be/bDVKnEQZVBg http://youtu.be/h5vJFi0CqBI Then there's an absolutely spectacular period gun collection in the visitor's center. It's beyond amazing! There's 6 rows of guns on display like this... (note that the building is posted) Saw plenty of stuff I'd never heard of before... Cool double musket... SBR, 1795 style... Don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to get stuck by that.... :ugh: The ranger on duty told us that they'll be having a large reenactment in the fall for their 150 year anniversary celebration. They're expecting 10,000 reenactors. We've put that on our calendar. They've also got a cool cell phone driving tour. You drive around following the signs and call a number they give you. You enter your location and you get a narrated account of what went on in the battle in that area. I thought that was a pretty cool idea. There's monuments literally everywhere, one could spend hours (days?) looking at and reading all of them. I'd love the have the opportunity to nerd-out and check it all out in depth. And since we like talking about bicycles so much here, note that the whole park is very bicycle friendly.

  19. I read the following column with dismay. I think we all know who gave the order to stand down and let Americans die at the hands of terrorist in Benghazi. It was the Commander in Chief, Barrack Hussein Obama. I think this "man" just sits and waits for opportunities to diminish our image of being a strong nation and one not to mess with. I personally feel that BHO and Hilliary should be tried for treason against the USA and Penetta, Gates and others should be in prison for perjury. http://www.americanthinker.com/2013/05/us_military_we_could_have_saved_ambassador_stevens.html

  20.   Yes, and???   As if teenage boys and girls haven't been doing this for centuries.  As if gay teens in the BSA haven't been doing this anyhow.  Is clandestine gay sex between boys who have to keep their sexual orientation quiet is somehow morally superior to clandestine gay sex between boys who don't have to keep their sexual orientation a secret? Frankly the logic that banning openly gay teens from joining the BSA will prevent gay sex is as sound as the idea that banning guns will prevent gun crime.

  25. Just thought I would share my latest project. I have been slowly working on a 7.62x39 barreled Savage action that I acquired from a fellow TGO'er.The past week I was working on bedding the action into a new stock and and waiting on parts to arrive. Final parts arrived saturday and had to chance to sight her in today. Ran 40 rounds of wolf 122g fmj at 50 yards (75 yards is about all I have room for at home) All holes touching on 5 of my three shot groups. I am very pleased with this setup and it is cheap to shoot to boot.

  30. If the BSA adopted its policy of not allowing gay boys to be part of scouts out of pressure from political forces (such as certain church or church related organizations) or some pressure group, is that in some way superior to then changing its policy because of pressure from groups with an opposing viewpoint or, does it all point to the same lack of backbone?   In the larger sense, while I don't think the policy against gays was appropriate; I believe the BSA, as a private organization had to right to set whatever rules it wants to set. That said, as you seemed to ask the question earlier, I do see that BAS as bearing a lot of the responsibility for this issue.

I don't get what makes anyone think the the "rules" of the Neighborhood Watch program mean anything here???   Does anyone here even know if this group Zimmerman was part of was even connected to the formal Neighborhood Watch organization?   Even if they were; someone please tell me how the NW "rules" can override FL (or any other state's) law?   I'm a member of a NW group and if I'm awake, I'm armed...I don't give a flying you-know-what about NW rules and I'm sure as hell not going to leave my cave without my club EVER whether I'm trying to keep an eye on a suspicious person or walking to the local convenience store or out walking my dog.

  32. Why is it that, all of the sudden, gay people have the moral high ground?  Some basketball player comes out of the closet and he's all over the news and the president of the United States comes on TV and congratulates him for smokin a pole.  It's like being Gay is tantamount to sainthood.  I have a message for you, gay people are justed as sinful as heterosexuals. We all deserve to be treated equally. The president never called me for fathering a child.....I have no problem letting all boys join the BSA.

  35.   I completely agree with you, Daniel.   I have been thinking, while reading this whole thread, exactly the same thing.   How many people here say they answer the door at night with a gun on them or readily available? Using the same logic applied to GZ/TM: what did that person knocking on your door do that was illegal? Doesn't that make you a Cop wannabe/mall-ninja/over-zealous security guard?   I would bet that most on this forum, given a similar situation: 6-7 break-ins in your neighborhood in a short period of time, perpetrated by an Elvis impersonator, would follow the next Elvis you saw while on the phone with 911 waiting for officers to arrive.   I am in no way condoning what GZ did that night, but as MikeG pointed out earlier, this event did not happen in a vacuum. It must be taken in context with the previous crimes that had been committed in the complex.   And TM was a stranger (or visitor, if you like, not a resident.) I'm not convinced that showing up at your Father's Girlfriend's house makes you a "resident" right away.   And frankly, if even the tiniest amount of cordiality had been involved; I still insist that the:   "Hey, what are you doing moseying around the neighborhood?"   "Oh, just moved in with my Dad and I went to 7-11 for some skittles and tea."   "Oh, cool, have a nice night and welcome to the neighborhood" conversation would have been the most sensible outcome of that night.
    1 point
  36.   Also something I noted today from the abbreviated 911 transcripts: Apparently GZ calls when he first drives into the neighborhood, notices TM near the clubhouse/mailbox area "standing around staring at houses" calls 911, watches TM and at some point TM looks at and walks toward GZ's vehicle.  Then runs away.   Maybe it's too many Cop Dramas on TV for me, but doesn't LE always say "Then why did you run if you hadn't done anything?"
    1 point
  37.   These maps are pretty significant. (I hadn't seen them until today.)   GZ is assumed to have been at the top of the map, until the altercation.   TM is (assumption here, but reasonable) Moving from the Clubhouse/mailbox area to the bottom of the map and home.   IMO there really is no way that the two meet back up again where they did unless TM deviates from a direct path home and comes back OR hides out and waits.

  38.   We still don't know who made contact with who. Zimmerman didn't indicate in the tapes that he wanted to make contact at all. Every indication is that he wanted the police to make contact, if he didn't manage to slip away as usual.

  41. There is no shortage of stupid people out there buying guns and ammo! Who would buy a $900 AK? The same guy that would shell out $100 for a brick of .22's. It's all do to people who sat on the fence to long and didn't buy when there was a good supply and now are "panic" buying. There is no shortage of guns, ammo or magazines out there, the problem is to many people are willing to pay 2x, 3x &4x the amount of what it's worth. It's a sellers market out there at this time and anyone getting in the game today better know what their doing or have very deep pockets. Just my :2cents: For a basic Century WASR you are right, but there is a wide range of AK Types and values out there, so to say that no AK is worth more than a certain price is simply incorrect.

  45. I would, without a doubt, have someone's ass if they did that. I say it all the time that people are aweful and this is just another cause of people being aweful. If my dog was aggressive towards someone and was not on my property then yeah defend yourself.   I find it hard to believe a mayor was at the scene of a loose dog unless they were there for some other reason. Hate to bring up conspiracy crap but who is to say they didn't let the dog go in the first place. There were 409 residents in Dowell according to the last census, hard to believe there isn't more to the story.   I bet there is a background between all those involved, the mayor, the officer and the dog's owners. Too bad the dog had to pay the price for some aweful humans.

  46. Stopped in to see if ammo had came in but it had not. But they had 3 boxes of 7.62x51 at $19.99 per box so I got one. Went back to the gun counter and they received a truck but hadn't opened anything. So I hung out for about 30 minutes while he went through them to see if they had any Ruger 10-22's. I've been wanting one for my daughter and always miss the shipments. Sure enough!!! $199 with wood stock, which is what she wanted. Can't wait to surprise her tonight!!

Great story. I had something similar happen to me on a smaller scale and to this day I'll bet that you can still buy that guy for a quarter.  So many life lessons in that story, but if I could only share one part of the story, it would be the part about everyone deserving respect simply because they walk among us.  It would benefit our society if everyone took this lesson to heart.

  49. heh... I've got a good one...   About 10 yrs ago, I was home alone (don't remember where my wife was) and had just started cleaning my SKS on the coffee table when the door bell rang. Just for laughs, I answered the door with the rifle in hand (the bolt was sitting on the coffee table). The 19 yr old kid's eye got kinda big, but he took a deep breath and launched into his pitch. The fact that the came in anyway impressed me, so I let him go. I continued cleaning the rifle while he talked. At every opportunity I'd clack, snap, or pop pieces together quite loudly just to watch him flinch. I had to try hard to keep a straight face. He started sweating.   :)   He went through the whole demo of comparing the Kirby to my current vacuum and extolled the virtues of the Kirby. Being the nerdy engineer type, I counter-pointed nearly every feature he said was better and challenged him to explain why it was better. He struggled a bit but didn't quit. He conceded a few things that I convinced him weren't actually any better, simply more (and unnecessarily) complicated. When he didn't have an answer, he said he would find out and let me know. Somewhere in there I got finished with the rifle and put it away.   As with everyone else, these sale presentations are exceedingly long and it was dinner time so I started fixing dinner for myself. I offer him something but he refused and continued with this pitch while I cooked. His boss came back by the house about the time I sat down to eat. She was pretty cute and I figured this is where she swoops in for the kill.   :dirty:   I told her that the kid was an excellent salesman and had performed admirably in the face of some pretty difficult questions. So while I'm eating my supper, time to talk brass tax comes. She dropped the $2100 bomb on me and I nearly choked.   :stunned:   $2100?!?! For a vacuum? Are you freakin' insane?     Do you come with it and vacuum the house for me or something? My current vacuum cost me $100, do you know how much ammo I could buy with the other $2000?    We go back and forth for a while and the price eventually drops down to $700, which is still WAY more than I'd dream of spending on a vacuum. It had been over 2 hrs at this point and I decided I'd had enough fun for one night. So I looked the lady right in the eye and said (and I'm particularly proud of thinking this one up on the spot)....   "Ma'am, here's the deal. If I'm gonna spend that much money on something that sucks, it's damn sure gonna suck more than my carpet."     The kid nearly exploded trying not to laugh. Again, I had a hard time keeping a straight face. She quickly and calmly packed up the vacuum and left. I still laugh thinking about it.       But there's more to the story... I told this story to some co-workers a day or two later. When I got to the $700 part, one of them says "Aw f_ck." Seems he paid $900 for his but should've held out a little longer.
