  1. I'm fine with what Andrew is bringing to the party. He is certainly providing a lot better info than the clown show on TV.

  2. Exigent cirmcumstances have never been applied on an entire city before, let alone just random houses, at least not since 1776. Our Constitutional protections are not null & void just because a bad person does some (granted very) bad things somewhere in the general area. And no I didn't see the officers "asking permission" for anything, I saw them knock on homeowners doors, when it was answered, immediately reach in & snatch the homeowners with one hand, stick their sidearm in the homeowners faces and then jerk the homeowners outside, ordering them to then go to other awaiting officers to be individually searched while other officers searched inside of their homes. What would I like to see happen to those officers? I'd like them to start asking people if "they'd like fries with that?" Because they certainly should not be law enforcement officers, at least not here in the United States of America.

  5. If I were in your shoes I would be looking for a used commercial walk behind in 48" or 54" with a Velke(That's what you ride on.)  Used to run 2 54"ers when I had my lawn care business.  They are every bit as fast to mow with and turn as a zero turn, plus you don't get swamp butt sitting in that seat.  You can pick up a decent servicable used one for about $1500.

  6. If I misunderstood your response; I apologize. You and I clearly have different opinions on what happened that day. Clearly, what should happen is that the truth should come out and a jury should make a decision based on the evidence without any concern about race or what will happen after their verdict. Will that happen? Who knows.   Am I clear that my opinion and the opinion of others that think Zimmerman’s reckless acts resulted in the death of an innocent person not popular on a gun forum… Crystal. I am color blind to this issue and have tried to stay out of the discussion about what will happen after the verdict other than to say I think Zimmerman is hosed no matter what the verdict. Do I think that’s right? No, and I am ashamed that law enforcement and the justice department has stood by silently and failed to act. Is that part of this issue race related? Yes, in my opinion it is.   I try to discuss the issues and not make assumptions as to why the people are saying what they say. What Robert is trying to tell you is that I am a former Police Officer and that impacts my decisions and opinions. Is that true? Certainly it is. Just as your opinions as a defense attorney impacts your opinions. Do I think we can both make informed decisions; certainly. Do I think a person is innocent until proven guilty? As far as the court system goes; yes. Have I formed an opinion based on the information available to me? Sure, so have you. But I am not a potential juror and my opinion doesn’t matter anymore than yours. I could make a convincing legal argument for either side of this case based on the law. But as far as justice goes I would rather be a Prosecutor in this case.

  7. Purely my impression here (I claim not "special" insight or training) but I see two big factors at play here when it comes to the militarization of government agencies including federal, State and local law enforcement.   One factor is simply a gradual and perhaps inevitable move toward a totalitarian state; it happens with every new law and every new set of politicians who enters office - government grows as surely as a weed grows from tiny plant to an ugly, large growth in your otherwise perfect front yard.  After all, except for a handful of true believers, no one really wants government to shrink because that ultimately means less power for the ruling class.  Giving military or military style weapons to agencies like DHS or the IRS or the EPA is just an extension of that inevitable growth.   The other factor going on, and this one is more "local" I believe (or at least seen more locally) is that older cops who have been on the job for 15 or 20 or 30 years grew up in a very different time (and different educational system)...most of them simply have never thought that "guns" in the hands of mere citizens was a threat or was not the "norm"...even in Ohio where I grew up, it was not at all unusual for a high school kid to go to school with his rifle or shotgun in the trunk of his car because he was either coming from an early morning hunt or was going to go hunting after school...in grade school we played cops and robbers and cowboys and indians with "fingers" and arms for guns and bows/arrows and no one got expelled from school.  Today if you even have a cookie in the shape of a "gun" or draw one on a piece of paper you'll get expelled and psychological counseling...and guess what!  The cops on the force today that are just coming on or have only been on the job a few years; they grew up in that "guns are bad" environment and likely don't even like guns at all themselves.   So yes...I see some real problems from State and local law enforcement toward normal citizens that I don't believe was there before and I don't think it's going to get better any time soon. That's why, I believe, what we saw happen in Boston is the new norm...everybody, including most citizens, seem willing to throw "rights" right out of the window because it's for the "greater good".   Now, if a LEO comes to my door under the circumstances we had in Boston and asked politely if they could search my home/property I'd probably let them but I'd do so, at least believing, that I had the right to say NO unless they had a good warrant...I'd do that because I wouldn't want to impede a search for an obviously dangerous person unless there was really good reason for me to do so.   Back to DHS...are they arming for war?  I don't really think so but if they are, they may well find one.

  12. I want to second what 10 Ring said in his post above.  It aint been so long ago that i drove the "dragon" pretty regularly.   Be advised that what 10 Ring said is what ya better do if ya want to stay down here in this old world. Any advanced idiocy or miscalculation (...like meeting an opposing vehicle in the wrong lane can and most likely will be fatal for someone...).     The hillside is steep, the road is narrow, theres no place to go to avoid a head-on crash, and there aint a good way to get to ya if you are hurt or need to be lifted out somehow. Runnin off the road up there will most likely be fatal, especially for small cars and motorcycles.  The THP and the NC State Police used to watch it pretty heavily, and they will punish the foolish.   Remember, up there, the life you save could well be your own.   This is a public service message from folks who used to drive this stretch of road regularly.  It is, indeed, a very dangerous and unforgiving place.   leroy

  15. If Chavez had a playbook, I would say Obama has read it. What I saw there would and could happen here. One big sign is the mass exodus in government brass, during the polarization, I think we are seeing some of that, next will come imprisonment of opposition (political) or the fear of it.

  18. Meh, discussion/arguement/debate = semantics again. Normally I don't mind chasing semi-relevant tangencies, I'm just limited on my free time today & I apologize if I am coming off sounding curt. I do not recall reading a response addressing the actual issue regarding the "militarization" of our domestic law enforcement agencies ... or the reason's why our federal agencies are being "armed to the teeth" under this administration. Only assertions & reassurances that our LEA/LEO's (or military) would never comply with or obey unConstitutional orders, however I believe the recent events in Boston clearly show that to be a misguided belief. Or did we all just imagine that we watched a video of armed law enforcement officers locking down the entire city of Boston & going door to door forcefully removing homeowners at gunpoint & unlawfully searching hundred(s) of homes w/out a warrant & w/out consent? Is it "looney" to believe that actually happened? Or "tin-foil-hattery" to think that it could happen again? What's to stop it? Nothing, not the Constitution, not the military, not the other LEO's stopped it from happening in Boston. Who or what will prevent it from happening again?

  19. I travel the road every single day.  Sometimes by bike, sometimes by car.  Please, if you go, 1) Stay in your lane, 2) Use the pull offs, if someone is behind you and they were not a minute ago that means they are faster than you, using one of the 108 (really there are 108 of them) paved pull offs is the courteous thing to do.  3) Ride your own ride at a pace you are comfortable with, if your adrenaline is flowing you are pushing yourself and endangering everyone else on the road.

  24.     A sit-on zero turn isn't necessarily safer on a hill, but a walk behind is very safe on a hill and gives you more control, especially over a garden tractor.  If you ever look at guys mowing the steep banks on the storm control areas around businesses and commercial areas, they use a walk behind with a velke.  You have a lot of control because they have a low center of gravity.  Whether a sit-on zero turn or a garden tractor, the center of gravity is much higher and with you one it, it makes it that much higher.     I should add, I have actually rolled a garden tractor on a hill.  Do it once and you won't do it again.  Luckily I was able to jump off away from the mower.  I don't see any hills that look too bad on your property, except maybe right next to the road could be a little awkward for a riding mower.     I think riding mowers have advantages too like being able to pull implements (rollers, aerator, and carts, etc.)  For pure mowing, a walk behind with a velke is hard to beat.

  25. Though zero turns are pretty safe on hills a walk behind, which is what we were discussing is likely the safest because all you have to do is step off and let it go if you get in trouble.

  29.   I like them for the exact reasons that TN-popo stated in his previous post.  So, I will use Todd's points, and just expand on them a little:   - Extra visibility front sight:  Trijicon HD sites come with an all black rear sight, and a large, colored (either yellow or orange) front sight.  This draws your attention to, and makes you focus on, the front sight.  Focusing the front sight enhances your accuracy.  They also have tritium which gives you a standard 3-dot sight picture in low-light / darkness.   - Wide rear notch with U shape:  This allows you a quick visual pick-up of the front sight for faster sight alignment.   - "Rack-able" rear sight shape:  You want a rear sight with a large, flat front edge.  This allows you to snag the rear sight on clothing and rack the slide if you ever need to do a one-handed reload.   Granted, the HD sights are not the only ones out there with these attributes, so shop around and find one you like.  However, I would highly recommend that you get sights that have those features.  Heck, I know guys that run front and rear sights from different manufactures in order to get these features.  Before the Trijicon HD sights came out, I had a friend that used a XS Big Dot front sight, and a 10-8 rear sight.  He has since switched to the HD sights.   I do have a lot of experience with their "Bright &Tough" line, and they are excellent sights if you prefer a more traditional 3-dot sight system,  However, they do not have all the features of the HD line, so they are not a good choice for my needs.

  32. I re-red your post...I can't see that you said anything that could have reasonably be interrupted as his opinions not being welcome on this forum. In fact, it seemed to me as if you clearly complimented him as being one of the people who has already "seen through the disinformation and propaganda".   There seem to be several who, for whatever reason, seem to want to assume Zimmerman was the "bad guy" here...words like "following" become "chasing" and someone looking out for the safety of his neighborhood becomes "playing security guard" or they "can't buy" that Zimmerman couldn't have pushed this "kid" off of him and avoided discharging his weapon.    I truly don't know if ZImmerman was justified in using his weapon that night or not...but I certainly don't see how that facts I have read/herd can cause some to have such an iron-clad, unwavering opinion that Zimmerman is guilty.

  33.   So you agree that the invasive tactics used by the LEOs are not what located the suspect but rather an observant civilian who alerted police?  If that is true, how can you argue in support of the tactics used by the LEOs?    I know hindsight is 20/20, but having this hindsight and knowing that there tactics did not produce results, it is not unreasonable to say that the searches were an unnecessary invasion of privacy and perhaps violation of constitutional rights.

  41.   Well... the OP is a lawyer, and is hanging out in Florida right now. I'll bet he can dig up a satisfactory answer. I'm curious myself. The news media touched on it when the Murder 2 charge was filed, but the details were vague. Besides, the media is basically full of shit anyway.   They have to have manslaughter. May be some rule about downgrading 2nd degree murder.
