  3. The Buckmark is a fine pistol, as are the Ruger standards. I would not pass on the TX22 though. It will hold it's own against either of the previously mentioned at half the price. Amongst others I own a Ruger Standards and a Mark IV 22/45. The TX gets shot more than both Rugers combined. Additionally I wouldn't recommend a Standard or Mark series pistol, previous to the Mark IV due to damn near having to graduate gun smithing school to reassemble one. Once you know how it isn't bad, but it's not intuitive.

  4. As an instructor, I’d like to offer some other advice. One, you seem to be jumping into everything simultaneously. For a lot of people doing so leads to frustration and or burn out. Instead figure out your priorities and start there. From your other posts, my first recommendation would be training; preferably even before buying your first gun. That way you’ll base your decisions on experience and not conjecture. Additionally, it’s often not the best idea to try to teach a spouse to shoot. More often than not it goes as terribly as a parent teaching their teenager to drive. There’s too much ego and emotional baggage attached to have consistently good outcomes. (In fact, I have a belief that the ability to learn from or teach something to a person ceases once anyone has seen the other naked in any context.) In summary, find a local range that has qualified instructors (MIL/LEO, USCCA, or Rangemaster preferred. NRA doesn’t cut it for me and I am one) and preferably a rental section to try out multiple types and work from there. Lastly, especially for the wife, it doesn’t have to be all at once. You get much better long term results doing short, regular sessions than you do with long, all encompassing, one hit wonders. A date night range trip or private lesson followed by a dinner out every couple weeks goes a long way for a lot of people.

  5. Cleaning out my safe and this one is really too long to start with. Modified choke, Nickel Steel Barrel (30") Take down model with no disconnector. That means you can hold the trigger back and pump out rounds as fast as a semi-auto Fine old shotgun. Needs to have the bluing touched up. Mt. Juliet Area

  6. Six o clock news ran a story tonight about this issue. The incidents by LEO are stacking up it seems. Sig still says its negligence on the part of the person carrying it.

  10. If that is what you want then go for it. While I love the 1911 platform there are a few issues for concealed carry: Size: too big for concealment. The shorter 3" versions seem less reliable (tried a Kimber 1911 45 in 3"). Much more difficult to disassemble as well. Weight, it makes your pants want to sag. Single action with light trigger. I feel safer with a Glock than a 1911 on my belt. If you do get a 1911 try and find a holster with a leather strap which prevents the hammer from falling while in holster. Traditionalists will argue this point, but it is based on my experience. My preferred choice is a 2" snub nose revolver. However, unless you man up to a .357 the power of a .38, even in +P, is marginal nowadays

  19. I'd take that in a second if you were in East TN. I grew up shooting & hunting with this exact same gun. I took at least 10 deer with it. It was my dad's and unfortunately, it was promised to the first grandson before I was born. It hurt so bad when my dad passed and I had to hand that shotgun to my nephew.

  22. For fly fishing in East Tennessee, I’d recommend the Watauga River. There’s great public access near Elizabethton, and the fish are active year-round thanks to cold tailwater flows. Easy wading and perfect for new anglers.

  25. Excellent pistolas... Probably a better handling pistola than a 1911. Got one myself. The downside is the compacts are heavy. The P01s a bit lighter. Fifteen rounds of ya are into capacity. Soft shooters as well. leroy

  26. I carried a Ruger Commander size 1911 in 9mm for a couple of years. Eventually swapped to a sub compact striker fired. Even the "lightweight" 1911's get heavy over the course of a day. I do really like 1911's. I tend to make better hits more often with them. In fact I just bought another one in 9mm. But I won't EDC it. I have a P365 for that. YMMV.

  27. I think ARs are a great HD choice. Good capacity, accuracy, plentiful and affordable accessories and ammo. The light round and high velocity actually make them among the least likely to over penetrate barriers (they have a tendency to fragment). I choose the standard 5.56 ball round for consistency’s sake. The round I train with will have the exact performance as the one I’d use in real life. Plus its lower cost is a nice bonus, as is the previously mentioned .22 conversions. I recommend putting a white light, a sling, and a red dot on a Smith & Wesson M&P and calling it good I’m not a hunter, but I have friends who use 5.56 ARs to take deer, and they are commonly used for coyotes and boar as well. Unless there’s other things afoot, you have no reason to be concerned about the alphabet boys for having an AR.

  28. I think if you like a 9mm 1911, and you shoot one well, then go for it. I’ve never owned one or shot one, only .45s. I owned, but never carried a 1911, except in the Army. I like shooting them, but they are just too big for me. I owned one now. But I’m a Glock guy (there I said it). That’s what I’ve moved too and what I carry, other than a Ruger LCP Max and a S&W 442.

  29. The M&P .22 compact is an excellent starter pistol. Also can be carried on the property as well as SD for a new shooter. Once competent and comfortable can always move up in caliber and can easily transition to other M&P handguns. Plenty of choices.

  32. So I see more of a shift to striker-fired rather than 1911 when in 9mm, correct?

  33. Was just sitting here and had Channel 4 news outta Nashville a little while ago and they had another report on this pistol going off without the trigger being depressed. Examples were from both civilians as well as law enforcement. They said that there are over 100 documented examples nationwide of this happening. They (Sig) are denying it is possible, but I have to believe that some kind of action should take place.

  34. I would just get a 9mm; you both can share something full-mid-size, not compact. Kings has police trades in at a very fair price all the time. Glocks and S&W M&Ps you could also buy secondhand from a member. 308- for the money, I would get a Ruger American Gen 2. HD- Mavericks 88 or a 590 if you can find an old Remington 870. I've been down this path buying my wife something I thought she would like let her pick trust me.

  35. I personally don’t think too much of AR’s for hunting or home defense if we’re talking .223/5.56mm, but I don’t hunt and in my abode a rifle is inappropriate. If it’s reached obsession point, Just go to Palmetto State Armory’s website and order the cheapest one they have and get it out of your system for $500-$600, maybe less. They make very serviceable, quality, and accurate weapons. Don’t fret about politics, society, or alphabets…that’s all overrated.

  36. Charlie, if you're just learning the ropes, don't limit yourself to just chasing trout. Bluegill are a blast on a flyrod, and they're spawning now. Find a pond or lake with shallow banks and wear 'em out. I've flyfished for many years, still do, but tend to chase "other species" nowadays. I've caught redfish in Florida on fly, and poor man's redfish, aka common carp, up here along the banks of the Cumberland river during summer time. My best, a 12 lb carp, is quite the battle on a fly rod!

  38. And that's part of my issue with Sig, to be honest-there's no such thing as a 'pre-recall' or 'post-recall' P320, because Sig NEVER did a recall. They did a 'voluntary upgrade', which means any used Sig you encounter could potentially not be updated, and therefore not drop-safe. As far as 'my Sig has 5,000 rounds and has been fine', folks are missing the laws of really big numbers here. Sig has sold, by their own account, about three and a half MILLION P320's of all configurations. During that production run, parts suppliers have changed, machine processes have changed, QC inspectors have changed. If this is some stack-up of error or tolerance stacking issue, the iterations that would need to be tested are potentially in the thousands. If only one run of sears were out of spec, and were caught by all but one QC inspector, there could still be thousands of guns in the wild with an unsafe condition. And I'll admit; ever since Sig told me I'd pay shipping both ways for a disconnector that crumbled in under 500 rounds on my $1,200 Nightmare Carry, I have some serious doubts about their commitment to quality. Combine that with the machining on the inside of that pistol, and I genuinely wonder what they would actually let out the door with their logo on it. Larry
