"Extreme" Solar Storm headed our way

Is this supposed to be upcoming? The article references a June 10, 2014 date.

The date on the article is September 10, 2014.  I think the June date is just there because that was when the flare of which they are using a picture to illustrate 'solar flares' occurred - sort of a 'stock photo' kind of thing, I guess.  I don't think that is supposed to be a picture of the actual flare that the article discusses.  I can understand the confusion, though - the caption for the picture isn't entirely clear.

I'd be happier if it weren't going to be cloudy tonight.  We might get to see aurora this far south with an event this size.  I've only seen them once down here and it looked like a slightly blue/purple cloud.  I was at the junction of 840 and 65 at the time headed to deer hunt so light pollution was an issue.  That would be something to see though.

"Later, however, Young sent Sky & Telescope an update: the CME's initial velocity was less than initially thought, about 875 miles (1,400 km) per second. Therefore, the shock front now crossing interplanetary space should reach Earth on Friday at about 12h Universal Time (5 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time). The SWPC's predicted geomagnetic disturbance is G3, a medium-intensity level that could trigger auroras over locations roughly northward of latitude 45° north (Oregon, Illinois, New England, and northern Europe). - See more at: http://www.skyandtelescope.com/astronomy-news/observing-news/powerful-solar-flare-091020143/#sthash.uOfeivu8.dpuf"

The event isn't that big...  We had a bigger event hit us back in April.

You'd need a much bigger event for auroras to be seen this far south.  Something on the order of 2 or 3 magnitudes greater.

Yea and there was a bunch of folks trying to sell survival books on how to survive a solar storm. Hope their was not a lot of folks that fell for it........................

what people don't realize if you aren't ready before, preparing 1 day ahead isn't going to do much.
