Winchester primers

Are Winchester pistol primers ok ? I am on a budget and we are getting out of debt so I am trying to buy cheaper components. I can get them cheaper than Federal. Pretty much , if you were Dave Ramsey , which primers would he choose , LOL !!!! ( we are on his plan) . I know this is not essential to our budget but reloading and shooting keeps me sane and sobor :up:

They work great. Their large pistol primers are marked "standard and magnum" for whatever that's worth.

Works fine for me. I've also had success with Wolf and S&B. I pretty much get whatever is cheapest when I'm ready to buy and haven't had trouble yet.

They are fine good quality primers. I too like Federal, but Winchester is a close second.

 

That said, we've used quite a few Tula and Wolf (many thousands) without any problems

 

...except the friggin' lead free Tulas...I hate lead free primers! LOL...I was shooting some of the LF primer loads today...excellent for malfunction practice. :wall:

Never had a problem with them but I like CCI best.

I have used Tula, Win, Fed and all seem to work well.

I used to use Win exclusively until I found out CCI was slightly cheaper. Wolf and S&B are also great for the money

Never had any issues when I would buy the cheapest or available, currently it's CCI at Midsouth.

I've had good luck buying second hand from members on here. Got 5k case a few months ago from gear section. MidwayUSA has free hazmat(google it) this month on regular price primers and cci on sale twenty five bucks per thousand. If ordering online you need to buy in bulk to stay within dave's plan so time to order about 10k primers. Stash some opportunity money for when some show up in sale section.
I rate Winchester, cci, fiocchi, wolf. Never spent money on federal primers. Not worried about my firearms ability to give a primer a good wack.

I fluctuate between Winchester and CCI.  I used up the last of my Federals but probably won't go back because of the packaging--big, bulky and the primers are turned on their side.  I soon tired of Remington because their thicker skin isn't compatible with light-striking pistols.  The Winchesters should serve you in good stead.

Winchester are great. They are a touch soft for floating firing pins. Never had a problem in an AR but for others more prone to slam fires like an SKS you should be careful.

Wolf and Tula suck donkey. I know some of you have had great luck but I have not. I've had a lot of duds with Tula and wolf....well, I worked up a load that with ONLY a primer change went from a standard deviation of 15 to 203! The only difference is going from CCI to Wolf primers. I threw 500 Wolf primers in the wood stove. It's was amusing. I'd just as soon take up with a flintlock as use Wolf.

they are good primers.  over the years i have used just about every major brand of primers made.  i like a hard primer cup for ar type guns.

I had a Winchester Large Pistol Primer (WLP) not fire on me earlier this week.   I was testing some loads on a chronograph and I had a round that just went Click and no Bang.  I pulled it out and there was a dimple on the primer so I put it back in the gun and pulled the trigger and got a bang.   I looked at the primer and the pin struck on the same spot and went off the second time.    This was on a Glock 30.

That's funny, I swept up a bunch of sawdust once and tossed it in a box I had thrown spent primers in.  I was burning yard debris so decided to toss it in there, even spent primers pop in a fire.  I had to walk away as every pop threw sparks 5 to 10 feet, with primer cups and anvils going everywhere.

if you load small and large rifle do yourself a favor and just buy all magnum load primers in small or large rifle, they will work in a pistol load and you don't have so many different type laying around, just my 1/2 cents worth.

The only time you run into primers that don't work is when you have a gun that is tuned for the lightest trigger pull possible.......and that 99 times outta 100 means Federal only primers.

I generally don't blame light primer strikes on the primer. A dirty firing pin channel or some temporary impediment can cause a light strike. :-)

I'm not sure which one it was.  I kind of figured that out of the millions and millions of primers they make one has to be bad here and there.   I'm still relatively new to reloading so this is probably 1 bad primer in my first 1000 to 1500 rounds loaded in my life time.   I've got 5-10k primers in each size I reload so I'm not planning on changing anytime soon.

The dimple appeared to be the same as the others that preceded it.  It looked like it was seated the same as the rest and now I wish had separated it from the others to get a better look when I got home.  That trip I was just running rounds through the chronograph so I only shot about 50-60 rounds that trip and that one was somewhere in the middle.

Gotcha. I would definitely agree, then, that if the impression after the first whack was the same as all the other rounds that fired, something was amiss with that one, and I am surprised that it even went off at whack 2.

So far, I have never had a primer of any brand in factory, reman, or my ammo, fail to go off when given a solid hit. I have definitely had light strikes, however. Happy shooting, and I will now butt out, lol!

The only problems I've ever had with primers have been Wolf branded ones.  Maybe a dozen failures to fire out of several thousand.  Most will go bang the second time.

 

I still use them every now and then.

 

Winchester primers are fine.
