I hope that God's grace is sufficient for Fred Phelps, as misguided, hateful and sinful as he was. Because frankly, if it's not then I'm pretty sure I don't have much more hope. God will judge us all. Without his grace, I'm in the same boat as Fred. I may not be as public about it, but I can be pretty dang misguided, hateful and sinful myself.5 points

The only thing good I know of that came from him was the founding of Patriot Guard Riders. Proud member who joined to block his efforts to disrupt military funerals and now will help honor any veteran whether WBC oalans to attend or not..4 points

Derek Webb (singer, former member of Cademon's Call) who once wrote a song called "Freddie Please" about Phelps, summed it up perfectly for me. I won't take any joy or satisfaction in this news. I only pray that he can find the peace in the Father's arms that he apparently wasn't able to find in life.4 points

You can look at another side of this to, perhaps a "positive?" aspect of his misguided protests. How many Christians had to really think about and in a lot of cases give voice to their faith because of him - maybe in some cases only to figure out how they were different. Reading the writings of his kids and family, his choices certainly made them struggle with their faith until the point they left. He was vocal in his hatred, especially of gays, but how many of us harbor those same hatreds - maybe just less vocally? Gays? Immigrants? Blacks? Democrats? We all like to pretend we're somehow better, but my heart is pretty black a lot of the time...3 points

I keep thinking of the old Ian Maclaren quote today, "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle."2 points

Agree to disagree. The point isn't aimed at him, or even necessarily at those few members of his family that were part of his church. The point is aimed at everyone else. The point is to provide an example of what the Church really is. The point is to show what Christ's love is really capable of in our broken selves.2 points
I don't know but a large crowed gathering to jeer at and disrupt his funeral would certainly be a little poetic justice I would think. Then again; I find disrespecting a funeral to be a pretty disgusting thing to do regardless of who is being buried so I don't plan to do so.
I think the best, most poetic and Christian response would be to have folks gather with signs proclaiming forgiveness for him as we are called to love all and most especially our enemies. The correct answer to his hatred isn't more of the same in return, but love in abundance.2 points

I think you are being a little disingenuous and painting with too broad a brush. Some on the left and some of the homosexual community may "want to destroy the nuclear family" but that hardly means that a majority want to. I would suggest that while homosexual activists may hate and despise the "traditional" family, and marriage, the trouble makers no more speak for the majority of homosexuals or the left than the Westboro Baptist Church speaks for most Christians.2 points

In my opinion any gun should shoot reliably straight from the box and not need a steam cleaning nor a break-in period unless it is an old surplus war gun packed in cosmoline. This is my $0.02 .2 points

It's hard not to feel sadness at the approaching loss of any life. But if ever a human being has caused more grief and cast more hate among us( Short of Judas Iscariot); he will be hard to find. Pastor Phelps had caused untold anguish to so many lives it is beyond human belief. When he meets his Maker, I feel a long explanation will be due.2 points

4 - 6% of the population are homosexual. They have a political impact far beyond that. (It's almost as if their political sponsors - the left - have an interest in destroying the nuclear family). If a brewery wants to offend 95% to score points with 5%, well, their choice. Not a brilliant one.2 points

I agree to the logic, but it isn't always possible to carry a full size pistol. If for whatever reason your lifestyle prohibited you from carrying anything larger and your only interest in guns was carrying one for defense, I'd say its fairly reasonable that a pocket pistol might just be all you need. Now the concept if only needing one gun may seem strange, I'll admit it has me baffled, but for some out there who have to choose between a little gun or no gun, its an easy choice.2 points

Mine is a 7.62x25 Tokarev loaded with a 168g SMK with a 45 ACP next to it for comparison. I was using it to shoot heavy, subsonic bullets long before subsonic loads were popular. I still long for a gun chambered in the caliber because it is an amazing caliber. It is probably one of the best defensive calibers out there but because it is an old Russian round no one takes it seriously. It is capable of defeating level 3 soft armor as well as level 3 ballistic helmets with surplus FMJ loads out of a pistol.1 point

I don't approve of using such tactics. If special interest groups want to hold the gun of the media to the head of a business in order to get them to submit to their will, that is their business. It won't be effective forever. People will tire of it eventually. I won't support an organization or cause that threatens people to submit to their will, even if that cause or organization shares my beliefs. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk1 point

peejman, Pilots are not able to control passenger O2 with an on/off on newer aircraft like the 777. Passenger O2 comes from individual oxygen generator at each passenger service unit (PSU). Oxygen generators are like what took that Value Jet airliner down when they caught fire in the cargo compartment. I don't remember how long the generators lasts but the FAA requires enough O2 to make an emergency decent from max certified altitude to a lower altitude around 10,000 feet. I am sorry I don't remember all the exact numbers. But the bad guys could hang out long enough to put everyone out for good. :-(1 point

What joy did this man have in life? He died bitter, lonely and full of hatred. He lived in a misery of his own and masked it by lashing out at society in an attempt to spread his misery to others. I'd almost feel sorry for him if it weren't for the added anguish they brought to the families of fallen Servicemembers in their time of mourning. For that, Fred Phelps and his people need to be run over by a garbage truck.1 point

The only entities that can violate the law with impunity are the operatives of the gubmt that are sworn and tasked with enforcing such laws... The fact is that the gubmt is above the law because it enforces the law; and to think otherwise is foolish... Nowadays there is no place that is safe from this scourge... Look at the CIA hacking of the Senate... The only fix is to clean out the whole bunch; bureaucrats, apparatchiks, and elected ones "en masse"; which most likely aint gonna happen... leroy the isolationist1 point

The US has an outstanding system of interlocking radar warning nets covering our borders. Maintaining, coordinating and monitoring these is a non-trivial exercise. I would be stunned to find that Malaysia has an equivalent system. Civilian radar has a much shorter detection range - turn the squawk box (IFF) off and the contact drops right off the scope at 1/3 or less the range. So I'm not surprised that Malaysia lost track of the plane.1 point

Not ALL instances of defensive use of a pistol are inside 3 yards. And under TN law you ABSOLUTELY CAN use lethal force in defense of a third party (someone else). I know of 2 cases of defensive use of a pistol IN TENNESSEE that were 37 yards and 20 yards respectively. Also you have the Fairchild AFB shooting where Andy Brown shot the AK wielding gunman with his Beretta 92 from 70 yards away. Remember the Aurora theater shooting? How long a shot might that it have been if someone in one of the back rows had been armed and decided to try to stop James Holmes? A bigger gun simply gives you more options. That does not mean small guns are useless...it simply means that a bigger gun gives you more options. If I ever found myself in a situation where a 25 yard shot might stop a mass shooting I'd MUCH rather have a Glock 17 (or even a 19) than just a J frame. On the other hand what are the odds of us ever being present when a mass shooting event kicks off? Who knows? If you need to carry a tiny gun then carry a tiny gun. That is much better than having NO gun. If you can make it work for you to carry a bigger gun then you simply have more bases covered.1 point

And an icbm can kill the guy from even farther out. And I need to be fighting at 50-100 yards about as much as I do at 500-1000 miles in any realistic scenario. For some folks, 50 yards might be useful, can't deny that. But it wont be inside my house, inside my workplace, or inside the walmart, or any of the places that *I* frequent.1 point

You handled it much better than I would have. I'd have told him that I didn't know him and that whatever I was doing was none of his business and walked away. Had he followed me and continued his tirade I would have told him that if he didn't shut up and stop scaring my children that I would call the police and press charges against him for harassment.1 point
