Something interesting we should be doing here

I was watching a foreign news cast and they brought up something that I thought was genius. I thought to myself that it is something that we should be doing here.

 

There is a push by some people in other countries to change what is taught to our children and with all the change we are seeing recently why not do the same here. In addition to reading, writing and arithmetic we should also be teaching our children basic first aid in schools.

 

I am not talking about starting IV's, minor surgery or doing a tracheotomies but basic first aid. Like teaching children CPR, the Heimlich maneuver and the basics of how to stop bleeding. Do a basic lifesaving course to teach the ABCs of saving someone.

 

Imagine how many lives could be saved if everyone in this country had a basic understanding of first aid.

Although it seems that in the far past of my youth, I had some rudimentary classes like this in elementary and junior high.

 

Seems as though we've done away with things that actually taught skills in our schools.

Back in my middle schooling we were required to take first aid. We received a certified first aid card. Imagine that!

I had first aid training in elementary/Jr High, but that was way too many moons ago.

I was also taught it in High School but like you said. It is no longer taught in our schools and should be. Physical Education has also been done away with and then folks complain about how many obese children are attending school. Back when I was in school from 4th grade on there was one hour of Physical Education every day and you were graded on it. That needs to be brought back also........jmho

I recall doing first aid classes in elementary and middle school. In high school I got certified in a 40 hour first responder course.

The only First Aid training that I can recall in my school-aged years came via membership in non-school organizations. For me that was The Boy Scouts and Civil Air Patrol. I don't recall any class offerings on it in school, but it's possible that I just didn't take any of the elective classes that would have included it. It certainly wasn't mandatory. That was elementary in the 80s and high school in the early 90s.

Great idea and would certainly save someone's life for the investment of even a few days a year in gym or health class.  But I can just see the looney's going crazy about "physical contact without express consent", which is really sad!

In health class (required) back in the 80's (still in the school budget) we were taught advanced first aid; cpr, compression banadaging, etc.

The boy scouts taught all that, the California school system taught us to take cover under our desk during a Nuke attack or earthquake.

It's still possible to get some first aid and CPR training in schools, mostly through nursing or other occupational classes.  Most systems have programs for teachers where CPR, first aid, and the use of portable defibrillators is taught, it probably wouldn't be all that hard to expand that to the general student population, although it might cut into the time we spend indoctrinating the students into the finer points of liberalism and socialism ...

We had it here, but it was cut due to budget issues. I doubt any of us will want our local taxes raised to pay for it. And neither side can balance the budget and add it back.

I agree that basic first aid training should be a part of the schooling of children as soon as they are old enough to undergo such training. Idealy it should be outside of the classroom but that's not happening so it needs to become a part of school criculam. Basic First Aid, below the level of First Responder training is a small time investment.

Want school kids to learn it?  Get certified as an instructor and go teach them for free.  That's about the only way it'll happen in a school. The only formal instruction I had was in scouts.  Otherwise it was just the experience of watching Mom bandage me up repeatedly.

I had formal training through Scouts but not through school. I did see recently that where I went to boarding school was teaching first aid to the student body now.

But find me a single school administrator that will allow someone to teach who is not a teacher. Not going to happen unless someone is putting money in someone's pocket, forget about doing things just for the good of it.

If you were a Red Cross (or other such entity) certified instructor doing the classes for free, I bet they'd be willing to talk to you about it.

One of the many reasons my heart broke to watch the BSA turn to :poop:.  I learned a lot if not all I know about the matter in the Boy Scouts.  First Aid and emergency preparedness was top of the list for my troop's activities as well as being about the only thing I studied at Boxwell.

Schools no longer teach accurate history or normal math.  I'm not sure they even teach spelling and grammar.  First aid in school is a great idea but that would make too much sense.
