depends on what it was, where, when, etc. If its a bunch of idiots waving guns in public, I will pass ---- as others said, it takes ONE mistake or intentional (left winger sneaks in and shoots) to make the whole thing go really, really badly. If it is a sensible gathering and something I can get to (location, time etc) then yes.6 points

It seems like some things that would never happen to anyone else can happen to me. Dolomite is the only part of this whole deal that can be said to be completely faultless. His kit performed perfectly, until the Spikes lower trapped it because I didn't check it first. Yet he's the one stepping up to make sure everything is right, when he has no obligation to. You just don't find people like that every day. :up:3 points

There are no friendlies, assume they all want to hurt you and take your stuff because they do. It is best to sneak, hide or move at night or you WILL become a victim. The highways are going to draw all the wolves because it will be easy pickings. Forget about a bug out by highway because it will be clogged within 30 minutes. And unless you are already completely packed and your BOV is full of gas you are not going to make it out. The average person is not going to make it ouf of a population center before the other 50% of the other people leaving the cities clog the roadways. What is going to happen is the highways are going to clog like Rita/ Katrina leaving leaving them stranded and with the option of walking to the "hills" or walking back to the cities. And when you start walking you are going to be able to carry far less than what you left with or even left behind. Bugging in has some real advantages and if I lived in a city I would, without a doubt, stay put. First is you already have everything you are going to have without the need to transport it to a new location. You can call for help from those around you while in a remote location you cannot call for help. Another big advantage is you know the area. You also know who friend and who foe is or at least have a good idea. Travelling exposes you to more dangers. It is also easier to defend a building or high rise than a tent in the woods. Those buildings are going to protect you from the elements and be easier to keep warm in and survive in for the average person especially those used to living in the city. Food, at least initially, will be easier to come by in the cities as well as potable water. There are literally a few weeks worth of potable water in your water heater and toilet bowls and that is if you don't ration. With rain gutters, collecting water is much easier too. And as disgusting as it might sound cities have tons of rodents that can be harvested for food. If any type of relief or supplies is handed out it is going to be in the population centers first. You need to also realize that there are going to be a lot more people than just you heading to a bug out location. This is going to clog the roadways like we saw during Rita/Katrina. The only way you might get a head start is if you are in a position to get some notice, like LE, emergency services or the government would get to prepare. Otherwise it is going to be a race to get out and if you are not in the lead you will find yourself stuck in the rear. And once you are stuck you and your stuff become vulnerable to roaming bands of thugs set on taking your stuff for themselves. And honestly it would be easy pickings. Dolomite3 points

To the original question, I think the traditional symbols and gestures will be sufficient. I am not one who believes that the majority of society's members will immediately turn aggressive and predatory. Most will be like most of us: nice, honest, and fair. We'll be scared and not looking for trouble, but cautious. If someone verbalizes that they mean no harm and/or use common hand gestures like hands in the air, I will deal with them appropriately. Ultimately it will be their actions that drive my response.2 points

It's only a slap in the face to a Christian (not specifically directing that towards you, but in general) who thinks that the Bible is the only "real" Religion and religious book there should in America or at least that our government should recognize. For anyone else who isn't a Christian the ability to worship as you choose is called Liberty, a pretty important part of the American constitution. I am none of the above, so I feel I am pretty neutral on the issue. I am all for you being able to give your opinion like I have given mine, we just happen to disagree on the irony I see.2 points

This is easy. Buy low, sell high. If you are concerned about civil unrest and didn't ever get around getting an EBR or two, or are concerned paying high $$ just to have your EBR taxed, regulated, confiscated and not be able to sell them or pass on to your heirs..... I would look at a nice scout bolt, lever or long range bolt action rifle. Go the to local store and see what obscure ammo is left on the shelf and match the hatch to the rifle. At least you will have somthing (maybe) legal and a couple hundred rounds. A nice Marlin in 45-70 might be in order.2 points

It's difficult to discuss what we "should do" when we don't know what will get passed or if anything will get passed. Certainly, beforehand, we need to be as active as possible in opposition and that includes our personal efforts of calling and writing our elected officials (and meeting face to face with then when possible) as well as joining every pro-2A group out there with additional contributions to those groups lobbying efforts. Once something does pass...I think every person is going to have to decide for themselves what they are and are not willing to do to retain their rights; rights not given by the Constitution but by God (or if you don't believe in a god then at least rights that every person has simply by being a "person"). I think starting NOW (and we probably should have all alone); we need to be VERY CAREFUL about what information we give here about ourselves...I'm not wearing tin foil but I know enough about technology today to know what data mining can uncover and I suggest that we think carefully before committing something to writing in an internet forum.2 points

INTRODUCTION - Hey folks, Looking through the Survival & Preparedness forum index, I do not see too many discussions on entry level radio communications. One comment up front (stolen from DaveS) - "Practicing" for SHTF situations still calls for LAWS to be followed.". So, if it needs a license to operate....get one. Or don't operate the radio equipment described in this thread. I'll plan on putting some general information together here in this thread, and focusing on the basics of preparing to "get in contact" when the lines are down. Most of it will be web links to sources that are a lot better than I can do, but will include at least (in no ordained order, yet) Getting Started in understanding what you can do to prepare, radio waves, frequencies, operating bands & services (HF, VHF, HAM, CB, FRS, GMRS, Commercial, Government, etc), propagation (gets from point-to-point),terrain,distance, TX/RX - transmitters and receivers (a combination of the two are called "transceivers") modes of operation (analog and digital), power (operating sources and transmitting output), Antennas, feedlines (between antenna & radio), and support structures, Operating & Communicating (home, mobile, portable, and use of "repeaters") Thoughts / Sources on Regulatory Guidance (staying out of trouble, minimizing attention to yourself), Reliability, Sustainability, Efficiency, Economy, Resourcefulness ("Hints & Kinks" - how to do it cheaper and better) Sources and Vendors (places to purchase stuff) "I can Help !" (identfy your self (w/callsign if able), and any other useful info on how you can help folks) It will not be exhaustive, or even necessarily precise, but will be close enough to get a new-comer started on learning, and identifying folks who can help. It is not meant to act as a all-in-all, but rather as a starter of learning process and a pointer to other resources. Contributing OPS, please Title Your Post as top of this post (Antennas, Operations, etc and keep it informational as best we can). Lets try to do lengthy sidebar discussions in new threads, not this one. It is not limited to Ham Radio, although it will be a major contributor.1 point

Ok, so I know Feinstein's bill may get watered down and pass, or may not pass at all...but let's discuss what to do if it passes as is. For those of you who don't know what it entails, here is a good video describing what we know so far: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDglpt8hpyg So what do we do if it gets passed? Do we all meet up somewhere and discuss it? Do we just keep our discussion here? Or do we just grit our teeth and start the paperwork required to register our newly classified "Assault Weapons"? If it does pass I wouldn't mind meeting with some of you guys in the Nashville area to discuss what to do. By the way I'm not suggesting starting a terrorist cell that starts plotting the overthrow of the government. So as a group what do you guys think would be the best thing to do if this bill passes, (again, not your own personal actions but those that involve us as a group) if anything? Thanks, TheFinder1 point

Just a head's up for folks that are unaware. Walmart.com, of all places, carries Augason Farms LTS foods, and the shipping is free with orders over $50.00. You can combine any "home free" listed items to meet the $50.00 requirement. For me this has worked out cheaper than ordering directly from Augason Farms. I know money is tight for everyone these days, so I hope this will help some of you folks out.1 point

It's truly a sad state of human affairs when people claim that the absence of evidence of something is "proof" that something is true. Of course, most people only find conspiracies in things they don't agree with and never consider that the same could be true of their own side of the political spectrum (presuming any of these conspiracies are true to begin with, which they are not). Also, let's presume that Brady or the VPC has hired people to be fake mourners. That doesn't mean the federal government has anything to do with it. This is the same federal government that is allegedly so against all private gun ownership that they fund the CMP and allow guns and ammo to be sold to the public while helping sponsor the Camp Perry National Matches every year in cooperation with the NRA. Also, accepting the logic that powerful groups like Brady, the VPC, or the .gov would engage in activities like that, it that automatically means that the NRA is equally likely to be engaging in this sort of activity, especially when pro-gun politicians are in control. Obviously they are creating false stories of defensive use of firearms and concocting fake stories about anti-gun efforts. How do I know? They are powerful, politically connected, have lots of money, and I say so, which means it must be true. EDIT: Let's start with this, shall we? This claims that James Holmes, the Colorado movie theater shooter, is an NRA member. Of course, the NRA is saying he was not. Who is telling the truth? Holmes marked that he was an NRA member on the application to the shooting range he submitted, so clearly he was telling the truth and couldn't have lied. Rather, the NRA is now engaged in massive cover-up to disconnect them from a mass-murderer. Why would they do that? I suspect that it's likely because the NRA actually recruited Holmes to kill innocent people in an effort to bring all of the anti-gun politicians out of the woodwork so they can work to have them voted out of office. It is also clear that the Freemasons are involved in this somehow because many members of the NRA are also in the Freemasons, and we know their connections to the NWO. I suspect that it is likely because the Illuminati are using the NRA as a front organization to carry out their own activities. Indeed, what better way to prepare to take over the United States than to get millions of unsuspecting Americans to engage in voluntary gun registration by joining a "pro-gun" organization? This is why the NRA/Freemason/Illuminati/NWO cabal need to eliminate all anti-gun politicians; they know that these politicians typically also fight for other freedoms that have no place in the new Amerika. Need more proof? Just look at the NRA's leadership structure. The group does not support democratic selection of leadership because the President is voted on by a board of directors and not the membership. The board of directors controls the operations of the NRA and meets in secret. They elected Wayne LaPierre as the President, but even a very simple look at his background shows there are things amiss. First, LaPierre actually served as an aide for DEMOCRATIC congressman Vic Thomas in Virginia. LaPierre also attended high school with another prominent Virginia DEMOCRATIC politician, John S. Edwards, who supported anti-gun legislation in Virginia. Now this may all seem like coincidence, but what is the likelihood that this small town high school would have so many DEMOCRATIC connections? Next, look at LaPierre's connection with Boston College. Boston College is home of DEMOCRATIC politicians like John Kerry and Tip O'Neal, both well-known for their anti-gun stance. Boston College is also a Jesuit college, which means it's associated with the Catholic church. We all know how secretive the Catholic church is and there is evidence to connect the Catholic Church with the Illuminati. Why would an allegedly conservative pro-gun guy like LaPierre have so many connections with Democratic politicians and choose to attend an Illuminati connected college in a liberal haven like Boston? Add on that his family was not particularly involved in shooting sports, why would he grow up to be such a supporter of gun rights? There are just too many unanswered questions here and it's clear that something is amiss. Wake up America! The NRA is secretly working behind the scenes to take away our freedoms and your membership dues are helping to fund their efforts! Prove me wrong on this. All these details can be found through even the easiest Google searches. You can't find anything to disprove these facts, so the conspiracy must be true. Right?1 point

I'm a devout Christian. Growing up I was always taught (as I'm sure most of you were) that one of the reasons some of the original people that made the trip to this continent was to seek a place where they could practice their religious beliefs without persecution. We all know that many of the laws our founding fathers put in place was to protect freedom of religion. I make all of the obvious statements above to say this. It has puzzled me that some "Christains" have gotten so offended when other religious groups want to have equality. Or maybe not equality but are seeking a society that isn't so dominated by Christianity. Many say "you can't pray in schools anymore!" I prayed openly in school and was never persecuted or told I couldn't. If a muslim teacher started every class with a muslim prayer or religious practice there would be an absolute up uproar by some "Christains" but they expect other religions to just sit quietly in the back ground when we have some public religious ritual. The whole "Christian Nation" thing is a little far fetched too. Were many of the founding fathers Christians? Absolutely, but not all. It doesn't take much reading of the writings of Thomas Paine to see that guy was not a biblical christian (I don't know that he ever claimed to be). I absolutely believe that if, as a nation we fell on our knees and repented of our sins and cried out to God for his love, grace and mercy that we'd be in a much better state... But I just don't see that happening as a nation. I don't understand how people can expect things to get better (in a christian since) when we are promised persecution. And not just that but many of the same people that grumble about these things don't live a life anything like what Christ was like, or even try! Going to church and walking an isle doesn't make you a christian. If you don't believe me go read the bible. We've got it made in America, Christain persecution is at an all time high across the world but most of us here in the states don't even appreciate the freedom we have. I will fight to protect our religious freedoms but not in a venomous or hateful way. If we want a "Christian Nation" then we need to enforce laws that restrict the practice of other religions... but thats not what America is about. I'm not really sure what America is about these days becuase it's not the place I grew up being taught it was. I think if "christians" continue to lash out in hateful ways with exaggerated responses to certain things then we are only going to quicken the persecution and increase our enemy base. We are to publicly BUT humbly make our stand and hold fast to what we know is true. Christ reserved his venom for the religious hypocrits that claimed to be on the outside what they were NOT in their hearts. He loved the sinners and pointed them in the right direction telling them to repent. I'm not wanting to start a heated argument and won't participate in one. I'm not argguing that swearing someone in on the koran is the right thing to do either. I agree with Tricky, Hand on the constitution because regardless of religion, that should be something we're united on. Just some thoughts and my opinion. I welcome discussion and will gladly agree to disagree.1 point

That said, I don't think they should use any religious book. Whatever happened to separation of church and state?1 point
-
So your saying that they shouldn't have the right to do that, or somehow that is the reason this country is going downhill? Sorry, don't buy it. Funny how everyone get's up in arms about the 2nd Amendment, but when the 1st doesn't suit them, it's all the other religions or someone else's fault. I may not like Obama's policies, but linking that to the downfall of congress or the reason we allow a Muslim or Hindu to be part of Congress is shortsided. I don't think either person who used a Koran or Hindu Book of Scriputres is any worse than those who used the bible. I suspect you may like them better than Feinstein or Pelosi if you really looked into it. Maybe not, but categorizing two specific people by their religion is no better than a Democrat saying guns kill people. They are both ignorant statements in my opinion.1 point
