  1. Freedom Day seemed like a good time to get this one cleaned up, so as promised here are some finished pics. I picked up 2 USGI 15-round mags wrapped in the wax paper from Brownell's. I'll keep them as they are and get some KCI mags for actual use. I'm waiting on ammo prices to get back to normal and I'll get some .30 Carbine and have some fun. The splotches on the wood were definitely some kind of mold or mildew (given the round clusters, I'm going with mold). Oderless Mineral Spirits wasn't doing anything on those, but it did cut the little bit of dried grease off easily. There wasn't much on it. It wasn't all gunked up the way a milsurp SKS usually is. Some are pics made as I disassembled so you'll still see some of the grease. I did have to resort to Simple Green for the mold. It took it off without damaging the finish, but the mold did leave behind some lighter splotches in the wood. I may go back over the stock with some Tung oil to help preserve the wood. The splotches are right where human sweat would have been most in contact with the wood. The left side of the cheek weld area, the underside of the grip where fingers would be grabbing, and a little out on the lower forearm where the support hand would be. I kind of like the discoloration it left behind because it tells the story of this rifle a little more. The metal is in great shape overall with only some very light rust marks on one side of the trigger group. The rifling is clean with sharp edges. I didn't disassemble the trigger group or the bolt. Both move freely and weren't crudded up so I just hit them with some cleaner and scrubbed what I could reach then added some oil. I tried to capture all the stamps for those of ya'll who nerd out over that sort of thing. The main stock, is stamped with an "H" by the mag well and a "3" along the front edge, both inside the stock and not visible when assembled. No markings in the upper hand guard. The bolt is marked "EM-Q" for Quality Hardware. There's a "5" at the rear of the the trigger assembly and "4" and smaller superscripted "3" towards the front. I didn't notice any other markings. There's a "W" on the hammer for Winchester. The usual ordinance bomb on the bottom of the trigger guard. The rear sight is marked "IR CO." for Inland or IBM. With the number on it, I think that makes it a post-war part so it was replaced at some point after the war. The barrel, as I mentioned above is an Underwood "3-43". The barrel spring retaining clip is marked "U". On the bottom of the barrel it's marked "PW ARMS REDMOND, WA" but that looks lasered on to me rather than stamped. I suspect it's the importer?

  5. All are made from 3/16" 52100 ball bearing steel. They all come with the combo kydex/leather sheath shown. They will be a bit more expensive than the last 5 I posted as these have a thicker, stronger blade at 3/16" vs the 1/8" of the others. These are $95 shipped. 1. 3000 to 5000 year old Bog Oak handles with purpleheart and G10 accents and liners. Copper pins and lanyard tube, thumb jimping on the spine and some texturing. OAL 9 1/2" with 4 1/4" cutting edge. 2. Antiqued red oak handles with locust and G10 accents and liners, brass pins and lanyard tube. thumb jimping on the spine and some texturing. OAL 9 1/2" with 41/4" cutting edge. Thanks for lookin!

  6. Shoot Point Blank had it for $379 in the case, the website showed it at $349 and I got a 5% discount because of my membership level. Here in Kentucky that just about cancelled tax. For $350, I am not unimpressed. Looks like that XDS has the CTS-1550 on it, which is $113 on Amazon. Making it give or take the same cost as the G3 with the same optic.

  12. I just made a post about this. Oddly enough, I missed this entire thread to make it. I just bought a Taurus G3 TORO. I know, it is nothing nearly as fancy as a lot of what is posted here. I am just testing the waters for the optic though. A lot of good information here.

  15. I haven't read the previous posts but I'll say this. COMFORT RULES !!!! My Ruger LCP holds 6+1 and I carry one in the chamber so that's 7 rds. This gun is thin and small. It fits in my front pocket with ease in a pocket holster by DeSantis. Lets be honest , when your wife or husband wants you to go to the store to grab something at an unexpected time like while you are working on something or mowing the yard , I don't want to put on my thick gun belt and load up a leather holster. I love big guns and carry them like a G21 , G17 , 1911 , and so on . But the ease of the small LCP at the last minute of the wife telling me to make a grocery store for ice cream is perfect. If in doubt carry a spare mag. It's like wearing body armor. If it ain't comfortable you ain't going to wear it. I wore the same POS vest for 5 years because I didn't want to complain and stand out as a complainer but after 5 years I said the hell with that and I got my new vest cut the way that it fits my body , my workplace sent it back to the company twice for cuts. Bottom line is that if a gun isn't comfortable carrying it then you more than likely wont carry it all the time. A gun with a small capacity is better than no gun .

  16. Jagerwerks is one of the industry leaders in slide milling/optic cuts and they’re actually running a special right now on optic cuts (for 4th of July). https://jagerwerks.com Another nice option like David mentioned is the Agency AOS system. Basically much higher quality than the factory Glock MOS platform so you won’t be limited to one optic footprint in the future.

  17. I'd probably buy a ready-milled slide or even a MOS slide. You can find the MOS slides for sale with various folks like Big Tex Ordance, on GunBroker, etc. Or pick up an Agency or Zev aftermarket slide. I really like the Agency AOS system for mounting optics as it gives you some flexibility instead of anchoring you to a specific optics mounting footprint.

  18. I had a boss who carried everywhere, including military bases. He always said, they won’t know I have it unless I need it, and at that point I’ve got bigger worries than a gun free zone. He paid close attention to keeping it concealed, probably more than most of us.

  20. Well after a 10% first responders discount and a $30 off clearance price I found a cheap but well known and well made pistol for $359 ! Pretty good score in my opinion. I have the same pistol in. 45acp and it's great. Enjoy the picture. I will give Taurus a chance later when problems seem to calm down and cease or level out. Until then check out my inexpensive but reliable $359 pistol. S.A. discontinued these but its new old stock .

  21. Shelby County started offering free handgun safety (non-shooting) classes back in May. Although I think the law will be barely noticeable, I could see it causing headaches for LEOs who routinely deal with the most thuggish among us.

  22. I just heard that the Knox County Sheriff’s dept. will start having a free class the last Saturday of every month to help people understand what exactly permitless carry means. More details to be released next week. That is the kind of service more LE agencies should start providing as the misunderstanding about what this all means is astounding.

  23. Thanks for your input Luckyforward. I like those Savage combos too. I have them in quite a few calibers . My grandmother cooked them like her southern fried chicken recipe. tasted like squirrel by Col Sanders! It was good. I have had it in rice, but never had the stew. bet it's good too.

  24. I'd pattern #5, #6, and maybe even #7 1/2 in 3" shells in whatever gun you're going to be using. Since most single shot .410s aren't choked - I'd go with whatever puts the most pellets into a paper plate at 30 yards. Grey squirrels aren't particularly tough - but it's still a numbers game at the limit of the shotgun's useful range.

  25. When I was a kid my mother used to make squirrel salad, using her recipe for chicken salad but substituting squirrel for chicken. She made a rabbit variant also. Tasted fine to me

  26. Great minds... I've pocket carried my Kahr PM9 for at least a decade now, 6+1 with 6 more in another pocket. Probably plenty. But I never had quite the same secure feeling of my first 3 years or so with an XD subbie carried IWB. So got by Harvey's the other day, first time in well over a year, and surprisingly they had just gotten some Hellcats. Compared to the PM it is .5" longer, all other dimensions same. No brainer, jumped on it. Soon as my Alabama pocket holster comes in, I'll be doing 11+1 plus whatever spare I decide on (Springfield is making a 15 rounder now, so that might be an option). Also, though the Kahr is rather unique trigger which I don't hate, I do prefer the exact release point and short reset of the Hellcat. I do wish they had named it something a bit less bellicose sounding just for the PR of carrying in general, but whatever. - OS

  27. Long term? I've still got my Daddy's Remington 11-48 that he bought used back in the early 1950s. He used it quite a bit and it was my hunting shotgun for many years until I finally quit hunting. I still shoot it now and then and it works just fine. Most any quality shotgun will outlast your lifetime will decent care. If I were you, I'd wait until a good Remington or Mossberg is available.
