  3. The SA-35 is a better High Power than FN ever built. Trigger, sights and safety that are all very usable... which can't be said about the original line. The new "FN High Power" is a completely different gun (and an improvement IMO) but more expensive, and in true FN fashion, take completely new magazines. My Girsan MC 35 would be a lot more usable if it weren't for the 8 pound trigger... but otherwise I like the features on it.

  4. Start with all the items mentioned above. Safety, law and mind set. Gun shops are bad about selling first timers, especially women, the wrong gun. They sell what needs to be sold instead of what the shooter actually needs. They're especially bad about selling women a small frame .38 revolver which is fine until they fire the first shot. But you never know about people. I had one lady who fired two shots out of a J-frame S&W .38 and declared "Hell NO! " Then another took to the 1911 .45 like a duck to water. Everybody is different. Remember that. I always start new folks with a .22. Revolver first and then move on to semi-autos. Then let them try as many types and sizes of guns as possible. They need to find what fits and works for them. Often that ain't what you or anybody else thinks they need. Remember that too. The general recommendation of starting newbies out with a .38 revolver is usually a good one. Simple is always better.

  5. Big difference between first time shooters and first time gun owners. If I introduce someone to shooting then they are going to have a sit down to go over the basic safety rules and basic operation of the firearm(s) involved including some dry-firing. Then I will still be standing right behind them when they start popping off shots. For new gun owners I don’t get asked too much, but if I did it would probably be a single shot .22 considering how people are these days.

  7. Good evening all you collectors of S&Ws. I have here tonight a Smith and Wesson Model 39 (serial number 8842) which I believe was manufactured around 1960 give or take a year. This specimen is in excellent shape. Really overall a great find. What makes this one even more unique is that the original box is included in the sale along with its two magazines shipped from the factory. As you history buffs know, this model 39 was the first commercial 9mm double action semi auto pistol made in the USA. Up till then you had to import a german or other foreign made handgun, how unpatriotic. But now, you can flex your patriotism with this unique and beautiful piece just begging to come join your growing S&W collection. Asking $800, reasonable offers considered

  9. Good morning! Finally got my sight hood and original front sight block off plate put on and wanted to post some pictures. Manufacture date is year ~2000, the barrel was shortened before I got it. I added the Williams peep sight from a .35 Remington Marlin I had at the time, as well as the Galco bullet holder. Might be my favorite rifle! This got me into reloading as you can save about as much as dies cost at around 20 rounds if I recall. I've loaded some 500-grain T-Rex killers and it is quite the kick!

Local pick up. Also have it on stripper clips, one can I believe, and maybe several cans of Soviet.30-06.

  12. I worked in a grocery store from 1989 until 1997. I was in the dairy department. When it snowed I never had to worry about rotating the milk to get the later dates in the back. Customers were grabbing milk like mad .

  13. I remember working at a grocery store in high school. I always found it odd that the store was dead until it started snowing. Then business picked up. Then, the worse it got, the more crowded the store became. People kept coming until it stopped, then it was dead again.

  15. Amen to that!! I work from home, we stay stocked up on groceries, and don't have to be back at church until Wednesday, so the snow can come or go, I don't care.

  16. So I took the plunge after fondling the Springfield and the girsan yesterday evening and again this morning I decided the Springer while nice wasn't worth the extra 2 to $300 for me not today so I bought an MC P35 I've only put about 50 rounds through it It shoots to the point of aim mind you I was firing at a target only 30 ft away but so far for about five out the door not too bad

  17. I also have a 1895 that has been cut to 16”. It is my favorite lever gun. Only difference is I have a 2x scout scope mounted on it. A 16” barrel makes a great size to carry in the woods.

  19. I think it depends on the shooter. Someone who is really interested in guns might do well with a .380 or 9MM semi auto. On the other hand, someone like my wife who is not big on shooting and only fires a gun about twice a year is better off with a small frame 3 inch .38 revolver. She has no desire to learn about how a pistol functions and does not like having to chamber a round. She loves the simplicity of just opening the cylinder loading the rounds closing it and pulling the trigger.

  20. That thing that FN is currently calling a High Power is NOT a real Hi-Power. Totally different new design that looks sorta like the old Hi-Power trying to cash in on a classic name. From all I hear, its a fine gun. But it ain't a Hi-Power.

  21. When new or newish shooters come over I break out the single action Ruger wrangler. Obviously go over safety and all that jazz, I feel that having them pull the hammer and then have no recoil even though they anticipate it is a good start to get them comfortable behind a firearm. From there, bolt action single shot older Winchester .22. After that it’s usually a Ruger mark iv with a dot to build there confidence. Then a 10/22 a little farther back. If they seem like they’re enjoying it and competent I’ll load a tx-22, and work up to putting one round in a 9mm striker. I feel like loading the single shot and talking to them while loading mags kind of builds their confidence a bit. Only reason I haven’t gifted my wrangler is that I use it as a confidence builder for novice shooters. Carrying I don’t have much advice. I think far more people carry and keep guns in their vehicles than should. I guess I’d say get a proper belt and walk around the house for a week. Eventually the thought that everyone knows you have a gun on you subsides.

  23. Good morning and happy weekend! For sale is a Springfield XDs 3.3 in 9mm. Pistol is in excellent shape and comes with two seven round magazines and one 9 round magazine as pictured. Also comes with the goofy factory holster and magazine carrier that Batman probably wouldn't even put on his accessory belt. But - also comes with a nice Galco IWB holster to make up for it! Also comes with factory case, documentation from when I bought it new. Finally, it has the factory test shell case - so if you're a reloader...there's one more piece of brass (probably wont even have to resize it, am I right?!). I have maybe ~100 rounds through it most. I bought it as a carry gun but never really carried it. I can meet in Collierville at the town square if you'd like to take a look at it. Only trade I would be interested in is a Smith & Wesson Model 10 blued 4" barrel in good shape with cash added from me as appropriate. I know that's specific! Priced at $280. Thanks for looking! William

  25. Dad loves finding cool little tools to give as Christmas presents to my brother and me. The one he found this year will be very helpful. How many times do you need to figure out what size a random bolt or nut is? Usually I take it to the hardware store and start trying it out until I find out what size it is. With this tool I can now figure out out pretty much any odd bolt or nut I have. It has standard and metric and different thread pitches. Pretty simple idea but it will be very useful.

  30. It is a 16" barrel so I assume it was cut down as I don't think Marlin made these in 16" barrels. If you are a Marlin expert, please educate me! I bought it about 15 years ago off a gentleman who was selling a number of lever guns via a newspaper classified ad (I'm 37 but now that sounds kind of old school, right? Sort of miss it though). Stay warm everyone!

  32. I have a friend who was in the Air Force and who owns a pistol, but who really isn't a "gun guy". He does understand gun safety, etc. The last time he came to visit I broke out my Marlin 45-70 and let him put a couple rounds down range. He was smart enough to watch me shoot it first, but the recoil was still a surprise to him. Mind, I would never think of giving a new shooter something with so much recoil, but I was happy to give Briant the experience.

  33. NoBanStan, the Barnes is an all copper bullet. I like copper bullets and that is what is in the Corbon DPX. At one time, the older DPX bullets had the Barnes XP bullet in their ammo. Don't know about today because there has been a changeover, in management, at Corbon. My EDC had 357 Corbon DPX in it now. When I use all the DPX I have on hand I plan to go to Hornady Critical Defense. Got 6 boxes on order in 357 Mag. The Hornady is a little hotter than the DPX, IMO.

  36. It depends on the person trying as many as you can is a good thing, and how they plan on carrying makes a difference too. I tell everyone I will teach you the basics but you have to take a class with another instructor. Learning from more then one person is a great thing. If new I don't recommend a subcompact, just need sometime to get used to handling the that type of firearm. Still a ton of good instructors around Tennessee. I try to take a class once a year with a new instructor, or someone that has something to teach me.

  37. I have someone that 100% will not carry a 38 revolver because that's what women carry. I explained all the pitfalls and she practiced. She's cleared 100s of stovepipes and dead rounds to the point she expects evary round to fail. It was a PITA. Be careful how you word things. I'm 100% at fault for that one. She however is an absolute beast with a firearm now. I would not want to be someone she feels is a threat.

  38. Everybody at my house got sick a couple of weeks ago. It took about a week to get over the crud, so it was probably something viral like flu or coronavirus. I've learned to keep mucinex, benadryl, sudafed, advil, and robitussin on hand all the time to fight the symptoms, since docs can't do much when it's viral.
