  1. I can well understand the prolific rise in popularity of the alloy and polymer frame carry guns. But for most of my life I opted for steel when given the choice, mostly due to the effects of recoil. Heavy just feels better when you have to squeeze the trigger.  Well, recently I kinda forgot that little fact and ended up with a 5-shot Taurus Snub-nose Revolver chambered for .44 Spec. It's listed as an Ultra-Lite. Even with moderate 200 gr. lead loads it feels and sounds like your dropping the hammer on a Magnum case.  It is fun........... in small doses.  Bottom line; great for carry but I hope I never havta squeeze the trigger without ear plugs.

  5. A complete reading of the Bill will show that it really could be called the "2014 Increase in Federal Union Workers at the VA Enhancement Act."    It was written by Veterans Affairs’ Committee Chairman Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).   Why the "I" instead of "D" for Democrat?  Maybe "S" would be too honest and true.  Sanders is a self-described Socialist and has praised European socialist democracies.   Of course he caucuses with the Democratic Party and is counted as a Democrat for the purposes of committee assignments.   His major re-election funds are from union organizations.    He never served.    He isn't a Vet.    However, in the 1970s Sanders was a member of the leftist anti-war & anti-military Liberty Union Party of Vermont.  The LUP had links to the Communist Party of America.    I reckon in today's Democrat Party showing hate for the military fulfills all that is necessary to be qualified to chair the Veterans Affairs’ Committee.   Anything that Sanders comes up with and that Corker works against is A-OK with me.  I'm trusting that Bob Corker was able to peel back the onion and see the rot.

  6.   Stop listening to your gut and start listening to real-world, validated information based on facts and science.  If over penetration is a concern then 223 is the better choice (with the right bullet).  Honestly to me, when it comes to over penetration and terminal performance, it's pretty much a toss up between AR or shotgun.  They both could over penetrate, they both could blow the shit out of whatever you're shooting.  Where the AR gets my vote is its ease of use, especially when accounting for other people in your home.  My old lady couldn't even shoulder a 12 gauge.  Maybe a youth model 20 gauge, but I'm not about to invest in a new platform and ammo.  Then there's the recoil.   I tried to shoot a pump shotgun from prone once; couldn't even reach the hand guard to work the slide without great difficulty.  That's when I fired it as a viable defensive long arm.  I figure if I'm in a gunfight I'll either be prone, crouched, kneeling, squatting, possibly laying sideways shooting around cover.  The AR is much easier to operate under these conditions.

  7. You're right. Children no longer show due respect for people older than them. I was taught to say Yes Sir...No Sir, Yes Mam...No Mam (sp?) . W didn't say yes and no, to people older than us. Generations have been desensitized to violence, profanity, and casual sex. Initially, I believe it was a break down from the home, and family structure. We have generations that are more concerned about the welfare of a pet, or a tree...or mother earth, than they are about their fellow human beings. I was very fortunate to have a family that loved me enough to discipline me when I needed it...and I don't mean "time out" either! We once grew tough, hearty, men that respected our women...men with a conscience, and a backbone...trustworthy men of integrity and patriotism...men that weren't afraid to clean someone's clock if they crossed the the social boundaries. We had winners, and losers...not everyone got a trophy for just showing up. We never had the horrific thought to kill anyone, not to mention our classmates, even though most of us had a Marlin .30-30 and a shotgun in the gun racks in our pickups every day. We were taught to respect all females as ladies, at least until they proved themselves otherwise. Us boys wouldn't ever use the "F" word in front of ladies...and ladies never used it! We now have a culture of men that seem like wimps, and a culture of females that curse so as to make a sailor blush! We've gone from good to bad...in my personal opinion. Our people, and our Nation, seem to have lost their moral compass, sadly. Common decency, respect, and patriotism, is not Pollyanna! We need to get back to it, or go the way of the great empires before us...on the trash heap of history. IMHO.

  9. No one had ever asked me.  But if they did I would mention something about keeping my options open,  fight or flight like has been mentioned before.   One answer I never will give,  and no offense intended to those of you who think  they are this.  But I am not a sheep dog, I have no intention of using my carry gun to save anyone who is not a loved one of mine.  I DO NOT carry to protect anyone else.   You are on your freaking own.  If you get shot and maimed because I did not pull my gun to save you then Oh Well.  Too bad for you.

  10. If you are not going to Walgreens due to their no firearms policy for employees then I suggest that you do not step foot in any retail store. I have yet to find one that does Not have that policy in place. It is simply an insurance thing. What we need is a law that eliminates employers liability if an employee defends themselves. 11. I recently left walgreens after seven years with them as an assistant manager. I too was subject to and understood their no firearms policy. I carried every single day. I understood that were I to ever need to use my gun that I would be looking for a new job. I was ok with that as hopefully, I would still be alive to look for one. For those of you saying you won't go back to shop at Walgreens anymore, good. Not because of this, but because it is a terrible, terrible dishonest and unethical company that treats its people worse than any group of evil bastards I have ever had the displeasure of working for. There are plenty of reasons not to shop there. They are a terrible company run by terrible people. If one day they made the national news because somebody snapped and went full in postal at corporate headquarters I would understand and wonder what took so long.

  12.   I agree, and think that warrants are bogus, but the article itself gives very little situational information, and the warrant is very detailed.   I won't justify the actions of any government agent as moral. They have the legal right to act on evidence they say they have under oath, and the constitution gives them the right to do so as long as it is in accordance of the Fourth Amendment. If they violate anything, it is something that would be settled in court. Of course, that is assuming that the system works...   I don't believe that laws are valid in general. I think this guy should have been left alone. Who cares if he did have someone else buy a bunch of guns for him? Who cares if he did manufacture destructive devices? Why should anyone care? If they aren't bothering other people or infringing upon someone else's immediate right to life or freedom, no one should care. It's their business unless they bring someone else into it involuntarily, but there are over 300,000,000 Americans and the Best Government that money can buy in place to disagree with me.

  13. A warrant can suggest a lot of things and this days I don't tend to  put much stock in accusations.   It would seem to me that if they had any significant evidence against him they could have arrested him and then searched to their heart's content; this sounds like a fishing expedition to me based on what I know at this point.

  15. Got mine too.  UPS guy today remarked "you must like guns and ammo" (we see each other a couple times a month as he's dropping off something gun-related, usually ammunition).  I just kind of looked off and said I don't know what you're talking about sir.    For those of you who missed it here's another pretty good deal.  420 rounds on clips, with can, free shipping: https://www.targetsportsusa.com/p-4344-federal-lake-city-ammo-556x45mm-m193-55-grain-fmj-420-rounds-on-stripper-clips-in-ammo-can-ammunition.aspx?utm_source=Target+Sports+USA&utm_campaign=726c6ee7b2-Weekly+Ammo+Hit+List+%23+66+|+Target+Sports+USA&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_4f4aeab969-726c6ee7b2-850205

  16.   Spots and I briefly talked about that same point in another thread several months ago.  Several others were saying how they planned to grab a bag and head into the country so I said that my plan was to go home, grab a shotgun and tell all these folks who planned to run to the country to get the hell out of my yard.

  17. This is just my opinion...   I think the straw purchase law should be rewritten to state specifically that a straw purchase is only buying a gun for a prohibited person ,or buying with intent to resale a gun to a prohibited person. Because if the person was prohibited from buying guns, then I could see it as a straw purchase.   But if both parties are legal to purchase and own a firearm, it shouldn't matter at all if one buys it for the other.   Again, this is just my opinion.

  21.   It's absolutely nothing like cheating at cards. It's as much like cheating at cards as it is like a twin-turbo V8. Not the same ball park, not even the same sport.   For person A to exploit person B, either person B has to be an unwitting participant in the deal or some sort of coercion must be used. If I ask $1,000,000,000 for a brick of .22 ammo, you have two choices: You can say, "Sure, that's a fair price," and pay it, in which case we are both happy because I got $1,000,000,000, i.e. something I wanted, and you got a brick of .22 ammo, i.e. something you wanted. Win, win. The other option is, you can say, "That's too much," and walk away. In that case, you're happy because you didn't pay more than what you wanted and I'm happy because I didn't accept less than I wanted. In neither case are you an unwilling participant no did I in any way force you to do something you didn't want to do.    So where exactly is the exploitation? If the market wouldn't bear the prices, vendors couldn't charge it. Just because YOU don't want to pay a price doesn't mean it's too high. Obviously there are tons of people that disagree. I haven't bought ammo in a couple of years because I agree with you. But nobody is exploiting me either way.

  22. If you're reloading you should have a good Reloading Manual. LOTS of great information to be gleaned from reading all sections.  The history and chronological development of different cartridges fascinates me most. Prior to the less than impressive .223 rd. there was the 218 bee, 219 Zipper, 220 Swift(well named), 221 Fireball. 222 Rem(perhaps most accurate), 222 Rem mag, 224 Varmintmaster 225 Win, etc etc.  I believe all spit out a .224 diameter bullet.  Not to mention my personal favorite; 22/250 finally commercially produced after years of wildcatters swearing to it's suberb characteristics.

  23. It is a warning in the instructions. It is like loading a gun with the wrong ammunition and then trying to blame the manufacturer because you used the wrong ammunition.   I seriously doubt a jury will award someone for using the wrong ammunition. It would cost them a lot to mount a defense but a user not following the directions and using the wrong ammunition should not cost them anything. Matter of fact the customer should have to pay all legal fees, including the manufacturer's, if they try to sue over their own negligence and loose.

  27. I think the opinion is fairly clear in stating that the "individual who sends a straw to the gun store to buy a firearm is transacting with the dealer . . . And that distinguishes such a person from someone who buys a gun, or receives a gun as a gift, from a private party." See Page 19. So, at least as this decision is concerned, I highly doubt it has any effect on any purchase other than a situation where the person completing the 4473 was sent to complete the purchase for someone else.

  28. This has been an interesting read, I agree.   And there has been some sound and thoughtful advice given.   I hope you will be able to actually try each platform out for yourself... a shotgun and a carbine...be it AR,AK. Mossberg, Remington, or whatever suits you. Wherever you are in TN there is probably a TGO'er around that'd be willing to lend a hand. Good folks around here.       I always have a Glock at hand...but keep a carbine and a shotgun handy and readily accessible. All of these, imho, have their niches to fill.     I also still stand by my original recommendation that once you have made your choice you'll seriously consider professional training. That would be the best investment you could make.

  32. Sometimes, demonstrations in general  have the opposite affect than what the demonstrators wanted. Unfortunately, I feel these demonstrators may have done the same thing for our pro gun stance that the "Gay Pride Parades" are doing for the homosexuals! I feel that the many issues these protesters presented...gun safety...scaring the patrons...being perceived as arrogant, irresponsible, imbeciles... and "just in your face" tactics, probably turns people against us responsible Second Amendment supporters. As stated earlier, we have the right to do a lot of things that wouldn't be advisable to do in public. Common sense and discernment is the best policy. We need all of the good press we can get...and it only takes one incident like this, to wipe out numerous positive incidents of press coverage. Like someone said, we don't even trust each other with a live round in the chamber...and we're to feel safe with a bunch of buffoons waving AKs, ARs and other long guns around in a public place? Whether they are "plants" to give us a negative persona...bad image, or truly intend to help our cause for the Second Amendment, they are causing harm to us, politically, and in the eyes of the public and business owners.

  34. LOL! The 22 Savage High Power uses a .227 bullet, and is also known as the 5.6x52R. Early 22 Hornets use a .223 bullet, while later ones take a .224. Don't get me started on 30 calibers! This gets more confusing than collecting Case knives.

  35. The article said they feds were carrying out shovels and weapons - no mention of having found the explosive devices that supposedly justified the search.  Will have to wait for more details but this is sounding a lot like a fishing expedition.  Sure, the guy ran but he obviously doesn't trust the government and he might have run for that simple reason.  That doesn't automatically mean he was doing anything illegal.

  37. I personally think the market is going to stabilize around $0.05 a round over the next couple years on the low end target stuff that was running ~$0.035 pre-panic (e.g., WWB).  If pressed, I can't justify why I think that and it may turn out to be wishful thinking.  My other pet theory is that the big boxes have been holding out.  They release just enough at reasonable prices to be able to claim that they're trying to help the consumer through this difficult time.  The big boxes don't want to be perceived to gouge and thus would be hesitant to flood the market at say ~$0.10 a round and risk long term backlash.  However, as the market stabilizes at say ~$0.05 a round they could release the flood gates and see almost a 50% return for sitting on their stock for a year or two.  I admit that this theory is based entirely on the economics (most capitalists would be willing to sit on a commodity for a year or two for a fairly safe 50% return).  I do not have any actual knowledge regarding such stockpiles.  I'll go change the tinfoil in my hat now :squint:

  48.   Okay, in the interest of not writing a 'novel, I will just say that if you foresee a SHTF situation where you are running around, living off the land and what you can scavenge and only able to carry what is in your backpack - and you really think you would survive long enough doing so that you would have time to wear out a modern firearm - then that is your perspective so whatever.  Me, I'm staying near my home, sleeping in my bed and keeping all my 'stuff' close at hand.  If I have to leave then I'll pile my 'stuff' in the camping trailer and take it with me.  I have no illusions that I would survive very long trying to do the John Rambo thing and I think that most people who indulge in such fantasies are fooling themselves.

He gives me a lot of peace of mind when I have to leave my family here at the house when I go on my business trips!
