I was not in the Military, but have heard many stories of friends and family. I saw this earlier and had to share. How to simulate life on board a US Navy Ship... 1. Buy a steel dumpster, paint it gray inside and out, and live in it for six months. 2. Run all the pipes and wires in your house exposed on the walls. 3. Repaint your entire house every month. 4. Renovate your bathroom. Build a wall across the middle of the bathtub and move the shower head to chest level. When you take showers, make sure you turn off the water while you soap down. 5. Put lube oil in your humidifier and set it on high. 6. Once a week, blow compressed air up your chimney, making sure the wind carries the soot onto your neighbor's house. Ignore his complaints. 7. Once a month, take all major appliances apart and then reassemble them. 8. Raise the thresholds and lower the headers of your front and back door so that you either trip or bang your head every time you pass through them. 9. Disassemble and inspect your lawnmower every week. 10. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, turn your water heater temperature up to 200 degrees. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, turn the water heater off. On Saturdays and Sundays tell your family they use too much water during the week, so no bathing will be allowed. 11. Raise your bed to within 6" of the ceiling, so you can't turn over without getting out and then getting back in. 12. Sleep on the shelf in your closet. Replace the closet door with a curtain. Have your spouse whip open the curtain about 3 hours after you go to sleep, shine a flashlight in your eyes, and say "Sorry, wrong rack." 13. Make your family qualify to operate each appliance in your house - dishwasher operator, blender technician, etc. 14. Have your neighbor come over each day at 0500, blow a whistle so loud Helen Keller could hear it, and shout "Reveille, reveille, all hands heave out and trice up." 15. Have your mother-in-law write down everything she's going to do the following day, then have her make you stand in your back yard at 0600 while she reads it to you. 16. Submit a request chit to your father-in-law requesting permission to leave your house before 1500. 17. Empty all the garbage bins in your house and sweep the driveway three times a day, whether it needs it or not. 18. Have your neighbor collect all your mail for a month, read your magazines, and randomly lose every 5th item before delivering it to you. 19. Watch no TV except for movies played in the middle of the night. Have your family vote on which movie to watch, then show a different one. 20. When your children are in bed, run into their room with a megaphone shouting that your home is under attack and ordering them to their battle stations. (Now general quarters, general quarters, all hands man your battle stations.) 21. Make your family menu a week ahead of time without consulting the pantry or refrigerator. 22. Post a menu on the kitchen door informing your family that they are having steak for dinner. Then make them wait in line for an hour. When they finally get to the kitchen, tell them you are out of steak, but they can have dried ham or hot dogs. Repeat daily until they ignore the menu and just ask for hot dogs. 23. Bake a cake. Prop up one side of the pan so the cake bakes unevenly. Spread icing real thick to level it off. 24. Get up every night around midnight and have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on stale bread. (midrats) 25. Set your alarm clock to go off at random during the night. At the alarm, jump up and dress as fast as you can, making sure to button your top shirt button and tuck your pants into your socks. Run out into the backyard and uncoil the garden hose. 26. Every week or so, throw your cat or dog in the pool and shout "Man overboard port side!" Rate your family members on how fast they respond. 27. Put the headphones from your stereo on your head, but don't plug them in. Hang a paper cup around your neck on a string. Stand in front of the stove, and speak into the paper cup "Stove manned and ready." After an hour or so, speak into the cup again "Stove secured." Roll up the headphones and paper cup and stow them in a shoebox. 28. Place a podium at the end of your driveway. Have your family stand watches at the podium, rotating at 4 hour intervals. This is best done when the weather is worst. January is a good time. 29. When there is a thunderstorm in your area, get a wobbly rocking chair, sit in it and rock as hard as you can until you become nauseous. Make sure to have a supply of stale crackers in your shirt pocket. 30. For former engineers: bring your lawn mower into the living room, and run it all day long. 31. Make coffee using eighteen scoops of budget priced coffee grounds per pot, and allow the pot to simmer for 5 hours before drinking. 32. Have someone under the age of ten give you a haircut with sheep shears. 33. Sew the back pockets of your jeans on the front. 34. Lock yourself and your family in the house for six weeks. Tell them that at the end of the 6th week you are going to take them to Disney World for "liberty. At the end of the 6th week, inform them the trip to Disney World has been canceled because they need to get ready for an inspection, and it will be another week before they can leave the house.

The air in the boat was so bad they had to take our mascot topside for fresh air. Actually they got the little fella not long after left that boat so I didn't get to meet him. upload img

I rode on a bird farm, too. I might suggest pitching a tent at the foot of an airport runway for a month and trying to sleep.

Thanks to everybody for serving for those of us that could not. That's something my son always said when his mom and I asked him why he didn't get out. He had plans of making it a career. He always said, "Because this is what I do....I go for those that can't go."

FYI, that ruling (and article) is nearly two years old. The case is now called Mance vs. Lynch (after Loretta), was appealed, and as far as I know currently sits in limbo.

While the gun ownership questions have been answered sufficiently just know this: Tennessee, especially middle Tennessee, is nearly reaching carrying capacity of Northerners moving in for "freedom". To most of them that means freedom from paying exhorbitant taxes, not necessarily gun rights. They are changing to culture to suit "where they came from". If you choose to assimilate, and become an honorary Southerner, then welcome.

I'm guessing mandatory training is a lot more popular idea among those who provide it as a means of income than it is among the general population.

I certainly understand the humane part of it, I am an animal lover. but don't under estimate a 22. Ma y an animal and many a human met their demise with one. An accurate rifle and a cool temperament, it would be just fine. Of course I would prefer the .17 or 22mag. Perhaps it's a good reason to add something to the collection. Personally I don't like to use a high power round when there are homes and people near by. Not worth the risk for me.

You don't see more suppressors being used because they are not "silent". Most killings are not professional hit jobs, so while some have used pillows and the like to muffle the sound of gunfire most don't bother. Also, who here will be using a suppressor on their CCW EDC? I am sure some will try, but most do not want the extra length on an EDC.

Concur! The whole handgun in your home state law is ignorant! I see no way at all where this makes sense except to restrict the rights of a states residents. But I guess that is the point.

Four up to enter then four down to bedroom level. (Berthing). Best navigated after having tried to consume the last 8 weeks of alchohol intake in the one night of liberty.

I've looked it over and there is a pretty large hollow leading away to a wooded area. There's a good place to set up and place the call and attractor low in the hollow. No chance of hitting anything. There's an area where people deer hunt behind the shooting direction to boot and it's not being used now that the season is over. I'm going to give it a try the end of the week.

Just posting an update for those that may be in a similar situation. I have become more satisfied with this setup. I had to return my original router to 4Gcommunnity. It worked just so-so and over a few days it finally got to where it was changing IP numbers about every 20 seconds or so, pretty much making it unusable. 4GCommunity was exceptional to work with. I called tech service and they were backed up so I left my number. It took them a while to call back but they were very helpful. Apparently the 6100D is about 3 year old technology and Sprint has made upgrades that this particular router can't handle and there is no update. It's apparently a geographic issue and sometimes they work sometimes not depending on where you are. They agreed to take it back without issue. Just had to pay shipping, basically both ways. I noticed they no longer offer the 6100D on their website. He did recommend the premium package with the ZTE hotspot. It's the newest technology they offer and said it actually picks up better than the one I had with external antennas. So I ordered it and am really pleased. i get at least as good a reception as the other one and the best part is I'm getting an average of 7Mgb download and often it will run 12-16Mgps. Can't really complain about that for less than $25/mo and not data caps. Being a wireless setup, the speed will vary and sometimes down to 2mb or less. But it usually is slow for only a short time. I'm getting ready to give ATT the boot and their lousy 3mb service that never goes that fast.

I agree wholeheartedly with everything you say. Making it a LAW is my problem. It isn't law one has to pay for swimming lessons. Firearms training shouldn't be either.

I have often wanted to try out a F3 Curtiss knife but never got the opportunity. I spent a couple of hours on the phone with Dave and decided to start selling his knives. I lived on Shacklett drive in Donelson for about 10 years and the first 2 years sleeping was very much an issue since I was the last house on a dead end street and the north runway glidepath and take of path was exactly 70 yards from my house. In my 3rd year they passed an ordinance that required the Airport to soundproof every house in my neighborhood. They did a good job. After that you could not hear any planes coming or going. Eventually the airport purchased every house in that whole neighborhood and I think they tore most of them down. Have not been back there since I moved.

We're talking about a proposed law that would allow law abiding citizens to carry without jumping through any hops, and you complain that lack of training is a reason why this proposed law isn't a good thing. I'm pointing out that just isn't true. 2 years ago we allowed handgun carry in a vehicle by any law abiding citizen over 18, can you cite a single example of a questionable shooting because of that change in the law? What makes you think this change would be any different. Of course if somebody asks me about purchasing a firearm for self defense, then first thing I explain is training is key, but the fact is the amount of training MOST people need to protect themselves from bad guys is keep your meat hook off the trigger until you want it to go bang, and the death comes out this end. That is the GREAT equalizer of firearms, very little training, and you're good to go for most common self defense situations. Heaven forbid any of us are forced to use our pistol for self defense someday, but the reality is most of the time, there is going to be little question who is trying to do you harm, and the distance to the target is going to be short enough that aim is likely not going to matter so much as point shooting. Training and education are really for those 'extreme' cases that we as otherwise law abiding citizens are rarely going to come into contact with. Training and education is important, get as much of both as you can afford in time and money, but don't let a lack of either of those things keep you from carrying a firearm to protect yourself and the one's you love whenever you can legally.

I can absolutely understand the need to do it. I would do the exact same thing. I would just want to do it humanely. I believe you do to, so no worries there.

I'm thinking head shots within 50 yards. My CZ will put one inside a dime size circle at 50 yards consistently. I have lots of HV hollow points.

I can't say that I necessarily disagree with the author's two main points. The report of the firearm does alert others in the area to the firearm being used, and that's good for avoiding hunters, criminals, and terrorists. The scarcity of suppressors has likely been a key factor in their limited use in crimes. I know that cans are relatively simple to make. I don't know why we don't have more illegal suppressors out there being used by criminals. If we did, it would be a slam-dunk case to remove them from the NFA because it would be clear it isn't working. The author is assuming that the scarcity comes directly because of the NFA. As it stands now, it's hard to say if that's true or if it's because criminals are too stupid to make them.

So after reviewing the bersa chat forum I think I'm going to pass on it. Seems like 75% of the threads there are related to trouble shooting issues with it. Really unfortunate as I really like the way it feels. Kinda bummed now. Oh well, the search continues. Sent from my SM-T230NU using Tapatalk

I doubt you will much of anything that will cover the trigger safely that is much thinner than the Remora. And they are cheap.

I've got a military MEP-003a 10kw diesel generator. I can run the whole house, including the a/c. The only down side is it's as loud as a freight train. It's not a problem out in the country where I am but could be a problem in a neighborhood. I got into a discussion on another site where people were going to great lengths to try to get their generator to get them through a SHTF scenario. My advise was to say your time would be better spent learning how to live without electricity than it would be trying to get a generator setup to get you through a extended outage. Generators are great getting you through relatively short outages caused by weather events and such but it will just suck up resources in a true SHTF ordeal. Lots of people these days think you can't live without electricity, I say that electricity is a relatively new invention and people have lived for thousands of years without it.

Remember... The quickest (...and best...) reload is a second pistola... Ya simply can't have too many handguns... The old confederate calvarymen carried as many pistolas as they could... You should too...! I say:.. "...Collect em all in multiples...!".... accumulatin leroy... the pistola curmudgeon...

There is some wisdom in having multiples and the reasons are well covered above. But like hlb14 mentioned above, having a (trusted and proven) duplicate of your carry gun for training and practice makes sense to me. I want another G19, but own a 17 & a 26 as well. Functional transition, magazine, ammo, and holster interchangeability and compatibility make sense to me. I reread this thread and don't recall reading that, if, God Forbid, you are involved in a self defense shooting...your gun will more likely than not, be taken into evidence and for a long time. Badguys have friends and family that may well wish to seek retribution. After all, you just smoked their source of income or drugs, perhaps a member of the gang they recently been jumped into, their "baby daddy" or "baby momma" ( criminals come in all shapes, sexes, and sizes). Being able to remain armed with a reliable handgun whose format you are intimately familiar with (same trigger pull, manual of arms, sights etc.) just makes sense to me. Just food for thought and the opinion of an old fart.
