What kind of powder for 223

Recommended Posts

Finely used the last of my powder for 223/308. Got to go buy more. Things have changed a lot since I bought the surplus powder. What should I buy?

223-55 and 62gr

308-150 and 168gr

I 've used IMR successfully in the past. I think it was 4895.

I’ve had really good luck with Ramshot TAC and 55gr Vmax.

Varget or cfe.223 will cover you for both.

Cfe223 shines if you're wanting max  elocity (especially in the .308) Varget seems like it's far more consistent though, albeit a couple hundred fps slower. Plus, it has the advantage of being available in 8lb jugs.

WOW! There's 3 votes for Varget. Guess I'll try that one first

RL15 works great in my 308 Mossberg patriot with 168 grain Hornady match bullet. I can group just under a inch at 100 yards. I have not yet tried it in 223 but I will soon as I get a chance to load some up. RL 15 measures pretty good thru  my Hornady powder measure also. I have heard varget dose not still haven’t tried it though.

I've never tried Varget, guess I'm old school but, have used a lot of Win. 748 in .223 and .308. IMR 4895 has worked good in both too.

wc 846 for both.    that is what i been using for years.  before i jump on the wc 846 i used imr 4895.    i also used varget.   all three powders worked well and i used all three in matches.    wc 846 you use blc-2 data, just start out 10% lower and work up.

I use CFE223 and get pretty consistent speed shooting 69 grain Nosler bullets out of Hornady brass.

I also like CFE223 but still have not tried it in 308. My most accurate 223 load so far has actually been with H335 and a 55grain BTFMJ.

RE... Accurate loads... H335 is what we used in both 222 and 223 in the old bolt guns... Same results...

I use h335 in my 5.56 and 308. Super fast in a 308 with 125s.

I'm another big fan of H335 with 55 gr bullets in .223/5.56. Very accurate loads and very consistent.

When I was loading 223, I used CFE 223. Worked for me. Meters well too.

wc846, blc2, wc844, h335, varget, 4895, and precision rifle are the best.  pick the one you can find and work up your loads.

Found some 9mm Blackwater ammo locally and was wondering if anybody has used it. Looks like good ammo just never heard anything about it.
      Thanks
